She stayed in the northeast for her education, graduating Summa Cum Laude from SUNY Oswego with a B.S. in Meteorology. Just a few days after graduation, she made the cross country move to Colorado Springs, CO to begin her career at KKTV, the CBS affiliate. Lucy has covered historic blizzards, tornadoes, windstorms, the largest wildfires in Colorado state history and dust storms ... they truly "get it all" in Colorado! A potentially dangerous situation is setting up over east Texas and Louisiana today with a HIGH&nbsp;risk (level 4 out of 5) for flash flooding in eastern Texas and through Louisiana (see above). High-level risk days account for only 1% of total days per year but result in 90% of all flood damages. An area of low pressure that moved out of the Rockies through the middle of this week is now drawing up Gulf moisture into the Lone Star State. The humidity, heat, and frontal system will all work in tandem to produce severe thunderstorms. <video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/forecast-1715689094047.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The grounds are highly saturated in much of northeastern Texas and into Louisiana contributing to the high flood risk. Stay weather-aware and reschedule activities that take you away from home or to flood-prone areas on Thursday. Flash flooding at night is very difficult to see and increasingly dangerous. Due to the overnight threat of storms, have multiple ways to get alerts that can wake you up. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Screenshot 2024-02-25 110543-1715690709436.jpg">The heaviest rain will be in areas recently impacted by flooding and evacuations just a few days ago. East Texas and central Louisiana could see over 5" of rainfall through Friday, greatly increasing the flood threat over the saturated soils.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Screenshot 2024-05-16 062457-1715862610916.png">As mentioned above, some storms will be severe with large hail, damaging winds, and an isolated tornado or two possible. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a severe weather outlook with a level 3 out of 5 threat across much of central and east Texas. Showers become much more widespread through the afternoon and evening hours, continuing overnight.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-16 07-33-04-1715866449370.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>

Flash Flooding Expected in East Texas, Louisiana Today

A low-pressure system <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/flood-threat-targets-texas">sliding out of Texas</a> will arrive in the Central Gulf on Friday with severe weather and flash flooding. With so much rain falling into Mississippi and Alabama on Friday, another MODERATE risk for Excessive Rainfall was issued to end the week. Upwards of 4" of rainfall could fall in areas already saturated by heavy rain this week, elevating the flood threat.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/wpc friday-1715865967175.jpg">There is a SLIGHT risk of severe weather - a level 2 out of 5 - through much of Mississippi, Louisiana, and western Alabama to account for strong storms early Friday morning and additional storm development through the afternoon and evening hours. Our morning storms will be south of I-20 and contain the threat of straight-line wind with individual supercells developing in the afternoon with damaging hail and tornadoes possible.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-16 07-18-08-1715865621529.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>We will see all modes of severe weather possible and there is the potential for "significant' severe weather through the lower Mississippi Delta, meaning hail 2" in diameter or greater.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/hail fri-1715865809125.jpg">The severe weather threat continues into Saturday across the South as a low-pressure system slides across the region. More Heavy Rain & Storms for the Soaked Gulf Coast

Eastern Pacific Hurricane Season began May 15th and we already have an area of interest in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. There is a Medium chance of development near the Mexico coastline that could become tropical over the next 7 days as it moves north/northwest paralleling the Mexico coastline. If this becomes strong enough to be a tropical storm (winds 39+ mph) then the first name on the list is Aletta.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/medium-1715807073898.jpg">Eastern Pacific Hurricane season has two peaks, one in early August and another in mid-September. This year we will be transitioning into a La Nina pattern which typically spells below-average hurricane activity in the eastern Pacific. This follows the busy 2023 Hurricane Season that brought Hurricane Otis, a category 5 storm that hit Acapulco, and Hurricane Hilary into the Southwest U.S. along with Hurricane Dora which contributed to strong winds and deadly wildfires on the Hawaiian Island of Maui.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/e pac chart-1715795559710.jpg">Meanwhile, there is no tropical development in the Atlantic, which is not uncommon for May. Atlantic Hurricane season starts on May 1 and runs through November 30th. The peak of Atlantic Hurricane season is early September when the waters are at their warmest and there are typically waves of energy off the coast of Africa that can develop into tropical systems.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/tropical outlook-1715795559713.jpg">This year is expected to be an above-average hurricane season in the Atlantic due to a transition to La Nina conditions. La Nina results in lowered wind shear (turning of wind with height) over the Atlantic reducing the amount that upper-level winds can tear apart hurricanes. Still, it only takes one hurricane to impact you and we highly recommend preparing ahead of time.

Hurricane Season Starts in the Eastern Pacific

We have seen a very active day in the plains with multiple severe warned storms, and that threat will continue overnight. Damaging winds and large hail have been the primary threats today, with hail up to 1.75" reported for parts of Texas and Kansas. (above graphic) In Texas, we saw a gust of 79 mph in Sunray and a 78 mph gust in Plainview! Storms now move into the Ozarks and MidSouth over the next few days with the opportunity for a few severe storms both days. However, the primary concern with any thunderstorm that develops will be heavy rainfall. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/spc-1715867869650.jpg">Most showers and storms will hit the Ozarks during the first part of the day with just a few showers and storms later in the day. Storms move east on Friday with Tennessee, northern Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia all at risk for a few stronger thunderstorms. Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

We have had severe storms move through the Carolinas today bringing gusty winds, hail, and even tornado warned storms. Lake City, South Carolina saw hailstones up to 1.50". Tonight, we have a marginal risk for a few severe storms with damaging winds and hail being the primary concern. The storms will continue to die down tonight as the system moves off-shore. Isolated storms will be possible through the evening hours.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/few storms leftr-1715823298407.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Any storms that develop may have a few heavy downpours but overall an isolated inch to a quarter of an inch of rain will be possible.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/rainfall totals -1715823424695.png">As we look ahead we will see a brief lull in any activity for the Carolinas on Thursday. Severe storms have been working through the Sunshine State for the better part of the last 2 days. These have been primarily wind producers, with some sporadic 60-65 mph gusts being clocked. They were high enough to knock out power around the Daytona Beach area in the early morning hours of Wednesday.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/VON_051524_RSE_APOPKA,FL_JUST OUTSIDE OF ORLANDO LOOKING NORTH AT BIG AM STORMS IN CENTRAL FLORIDA_TW_@AVGEEKFINSO_DO_E051524-1715775422402.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The Storm Prediction Center has maintained northern Florida and southern Georgia under a SLIGHT (level 2 out of 5) risk for severe storms Wednesday. Our forecast models have the strongest storms pushing through these spots by the evening.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/SPC Day 1 FL Wed-1715775326889.png">Storms will last into the afternoon, targeting the Orlando and Tampa areas. All modes of severe weather will be on the table, including a few quick spin-ups later today. The storm threat continues into South Florida on Thursday with a marginal risk in store for much of the southern part of the state. Another Dose of Severe Storms in Florida

Wildfire smoke from Canada reached down and over parts of the Northern U.S. Plains thanks to northwesterly flow. A series of upper-level low-pressure systems will keep smoke in our skies over the next few days. As a result, moderate to unhealthy air quality conditions are anticipated. If you are sensitive to smoke or have underlying health conditions, please stay indoors and consider wearing a mask (like an N-95) to protect yourself from the particulates.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/05-14_fire smoke-1715741392551.png">Smoke stays stagnant through Iowa, Nebraska, the Dakotas, and Minnesota through Thursday. A few showers may temporarily relieve smoky air conditions, but expect to see haze in the skies. The smoke isn't nearly as thick as earlier in the week in the High Plains, thankfully, but it still could cause impacts to those who are sensitive.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/05-14_hrrr smoek-1715741442069.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Most of the wildfire smoke comes from British Columbia and Canada's Northwest Territories. These are the same provinces and territories that had an active fire season in May and June of 2023. Multiple <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.emergencyinfobc.gov.bc.ca/">evacuation orders</a> are in effect for communities in British Columbia as fires advance. Canadian wildfire season runs from May through September with the most active months in June and July. This year we have already seen over half a million acres burned. 42 fires are burning "out of control" meaning there is no containment.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/smokes stats-1715715385960.jpg">2023 was one of the most active seasons on record with thick smoke pouring into the northern U.S. and turning the skies over NYC, Boston, and Philadelphia an eerie orange. Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation.
