She stayed in the northeast for her education, graduating Summa Cum Laude from SUNY Oswego with a B.S. in Meteorology. <p>Energy swinging out of the West Coast will help to produce a severe weather threat in the Plains through Thursday. There will be enough moisture to support severe storms and locally heavy rain. The frontal boundary responsible for storm development drops south throughout the day. At the same time, temperatures will warm ahead of that cold front in the Texas and Oklahoma panhandle. Storms will develop in the heat of the day and continue overnight through early Thursday morning.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-15 15-05-15-1715807132161.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Wednesday's severe weather threat includes the possibility of supercell and multicell thunderstorms. These thunderstorm types lead to the heightened potential for tornadoes and the risk of damaging wind through Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/sig wind-1715791313442.jpg">The severe threat continues to push to the east on Thursday encompassing a part of the Ozarks for the threat of damaging wind and hail. <p>Storms blew through the Tennessee River Valley on Tuesday, dropping some 1" hail and winds that were strong enough to knock over some trees. The atmosphere remains unstable as energy and moisture pushes from the Central U.S. and into the southeastern coast today. A severe thunderstorm watch in effect for North and South Carolina through 8 PM ET. </p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/VON_051424_RSE_CRUMP, TN_SPRING HAIL STORM FALLING ON WOODEN PATIO_TW@SCOTTYSGARAGEUS_AA_E051424-1715773100742.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Wednesday, we remain under a <strong>SLIGHT</strong> risk (level 2 out of 5) for storms. All forms of severe weather are possible but our primary threat is damaging wind and some large hail. A few pop-up showers and thunderstorms are possible throughout the evening before our front finally pushes offshore.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-15 13-05-53-1715799980491.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>

Storms Threaten The Carolinas Today

<p>An area of low pressure slides off the Rockies through the middle of this week, drawing up Gulf moisture into the Lone Star State once again. The moisture and frontal system work together to produce strong and severe thunderstorms with the risk of heavy rainfall. The Weather Prediction Center [WPC] has issued a <strong>MODERATE</strong> risk (level 3 out of 4) for flash flooding in eastern Texas and through Louisiana (see above). A moderate risk indicates that numerous flash floods are likely, with the probability of seeing rivers, creeks, and streams reaching significant levels.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/forecast-1715689094047.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>The grounds are highly saturated in much of northeastern Texas and into Louisiana. This will make it even more likely for heightened flood concerns in these areas. Be sure to stay weather-aware and reschedule activities that take you away from home or to flood-prone areas on Thursday.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Screenshot 2024-02-25 110543-1715690709436.jpg">The heaviest rain will be in areas recently impacted by flooding and evacuations just a few days ago. East Texas and central Louisiana could see upwards of 5" of rainfall from Wednesday through Friday which will greatly increase the flood threat over the saturated soils.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/tx rain-1715780178191.jpg">As mentioned above, some storms will be on the stronger side with large hail and an isolated tornado possible too. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a severe weather outlook with a level 2 out of 5 threat across much of central and east Texas on Thursday.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-15 11-44-19-1715798852104.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>

Flash Flooding Expected Thursday in Texas

<p>Eastern Pacific Hurricane Season begins today, May 15th and we already have an area of interest in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. Right now it is a LOW chance of development over the next 7 days as it moves north/northwest paralleling the Mexico coastline. If this becomes strong enough to be a tropical storm (winds 39+ mph) then the first name on the list is Aletta.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/medium-1715807073898.jpg"></p><p>Eastern Pacific Hurricane season has two peaks, one in early August and another in mid-September. This year we will be transitioning into a La Nina pattern which typically spells below-average hurricane activity in the eastern Pacific. This follows the busy 2023 Hurricane Season that brought Hurricane Otis, a category 5 storm that hit Alcapulco, and Hurricane Hilary into the Southwest U.S. along with Hurricane Dora which contributed to strong winds and deadly wildfires on the Hawaiian Island of Maui.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/e pac chart-1715795559710.jpg">Meanwhile, there is no tropical development in the Atlantic, which is not uncommon for May. Atlantic Hurricane season starts on May 1 and runs through November 30th. The peak of Atlantic Hurricane season is early September when the waters are at their warmest and there are typically waves of energy off the coast of Africa that can develop into tropical systems.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/tropical outlook-1715795559713.jpg">This year is expected to be an above-average hurricane season in the Atlantic due to a transition to La Nina conditions. La Nina results in lowered wind shear (turning of wind with height) over the Atlantic reducing the amount that upper-level winds can tear apart hurricanes. Still, it only takes one hurricane to impact you and we highly recommend preparing ahead of time.</p>

Hurricane Season Starts in the Eastern Pacific

<p>A low-pressure system sliding out of Texas will arrive in the Central Gulf on Friday with the potential for severe weather and flash flooding. There is a SLIGHT risk of severe weather - a level 2 out of 5 - through much of Mississippi, Louisiana, and western Alabama to account for strong storms early Friday morning and additional storm development through the afternoon and evening hours. Our morning storms will be south of I-20 and look to be tornadic in nature with heavy rain north of the interstate. </p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-15 07-35-16-1715780200828.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>We will see all modes of severe weather possible and there is the potential for "significant' severe weather through the lower Mississippi Delta, meaning EF-2 or stronger tornadoes or wind gusts over 75 mph. A significant threat also accounts for 2" or larger hail but that looks less likely. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/sig severe-1715780438623.jpg">With so much rain falling into Mississippi and Alabama on Friday, another <strong>MODERATE</strong> risk for Excessive Rainfall was issued to end the week. Upwards of 4" of rainfall could fall in areas already saturated by heavy rain this week, elevating the flood threat. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/WPC Day 3 ERO-1715775990741.png"></p>

More Heavy Rain Friday for the Soaked Gulf Coast

<p>Severe storms have been working through the Sunshine State for the better part of the last 2 days. These have been primarily wind producers, with some sporadic 60-65 mph gusts being clocked. They were high enough to knock out power around the Daytona Beach area in the early morning hours of Wednesday.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/VON_051524_RSE_APOPKA,FL_JUST OUTSIDE OF ORLANDO LOOKING NORTH AT BIG AM STORMS IN CENTRAL FLORIDA_TW_@AVGEEKFINSO_DO_E051524-1715775422402.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>The Storm Prediction Center has maintained northern Florida and southern Georgia under a <strong>SLIGHT </strong>(level 2 out of 5) risk for severe storms Wednesday. Our forecast models have the strongest storms pushing through these spots by the evening.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/SPC Day 1 FL Wed-1715775326889.png">Storms will last into the afternoon, targeting the Orlando and Tampa areas. All modes of severe weather will be on the table, including a few quick spin-ups later today. The storm threat continues into South Florida on Thursday with a marginal risk in store for much of the southern part of the state. Another Dose of Severe Storms in Florida

<p>Wildfire smoke from Canada reached down and over parts of the Northern U.S. Plains thanks to northwesterly flow. A series of upper-level low-pressure systems will keep smoke in our skies over the next few days. As a result, moderate to unhealthy air quality conditions are anticipated. If you are sensitive to smoke or have underlying health conditions, please stay indoors and consider wearing a mask (like an N-95) to protect yourself from the particulates.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/05-14_fire smoke-1715741392551.png"></p><p>Smoke stays stagnant through Iowa, Nebraska, the Dakotas, and Minnesota through Thursday. A few showers may temporarily relieve smoky air conditions, but expect to see haze in the skies. The smoke isn't nearly as thick as earlier in the week in the High Plains, thankfully, but it still could cause impacts to those who are sensitive.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/05-14_hrrr smoek-1715741442069.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Most of the wildfire smoke comes from British Columbia and Canada's Northwest Territories. These are the same provinces and territories that had an active fire season in May and June of 2023. Multiple <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.emergencyinfobc.gov.bc.ca/"><strong><em><u>evacuation orders</u></em></strong></a> are in effect for communities in British Columbia as fires advance. Canadian wildfire season runs from May through September with the most active months in June and July. This year we have already seen over half a million acres burned. 42 fires are burning "out of control" meaning there is no containment.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/smokes stats-1715715385960.jpg">2023 was one of the most active seasons on record with thick smoke pouring into the northern U.S. and turning the skies over NYC, Boston, and Philadelphia an eerie orange. <p style="margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;"><span style="font-size: 13.5pt; color: #454545;">Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

<p>Snow piled up in the Rocky Mountains this weekend, with over two feet of snow reported in parts of Colorado! Even the Denver metro area saw accumulating snow Saturday morning.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1784356854233178450" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1784356854233178450"></div><p><br>Many mountainous areas from the Cascades to the Rockies reported heavy snow from mid-week into the weekend, with the Front Range of Colorado reported the highest totals thus far.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/Screenshot 2024-04-28 062758-1714307296262.png">Moisture lingering behind the trough and afternoon heating will lead to a few more pop-up rain and snow showers on Sunday. Winter alerts are in effect for SE Wyoming's Snowy Range, where several inches of snow and gusty winds are expected.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/forecast-1714319083449.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Additional snowfall is only expected to top a few inches on Sunday but could create travel issues on mountain passes, including on I-70 and I-80.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/snow accumulation-1714319142786.jpg">Snow this late in the season is not unusual in the Colorado Rockies. In fact, even more snow is possible toward the end of the computing workweek. Denver has recorded measurable snow into late May - with mountain snow chances lingering even longer. This is great news for the handful of ski resorts that remain open, and hope to extend their season even further.</p>
