Chasing Severe Storms One Day, Measuring Snow the Next? Jan 28, 2013

Monday, January 28th, 2013

Calling all spiders, calling all spiders. Apparently there was a spider convention at the Northern Michigan University campus today. Take a look at what the webcam caught earlier today. The image below reminds me a lot of the movie “Ice Spiders” LOL.

Seasonal Snowfall Deficit

Look at the seasonal snowfall deficits across the Great Lakes region. The lack of snowfall this season can in some cases be attributed to the lack of Arctic air and lake effect snow in these areas so far this season!

Think Snow?

Thanks to Klint Skelly for the picture below out of St. Cloud, MN. I like the juxtaposition of the hula dancer with the wintry scene! St. Cloud ended up with nearly 1″ of snow on Sunday. Other snowfall reports are listed below.

Chicago Snow

The lackluster winter in Chicago continues… The seasonal snow total is -16″ below normal and last Friday was the first 1″ snowfall of the season, which set a record for the latest 1″ snowfall.

Active Mid-Week Ahead

Here’s a look at our in-house Rain/Snow/Ice forecast, which shows an interesting picture through 7pm Wednesday. Note the ‘heavier’ snow swaths in the higher elevations out west, but also note 2 bands over the Upper Midwest/Great Lakes Region. This may bring shovelable amounts of snow to some (including Milwaukee, WI). The other thing to note is the ‘heavier’ rain potential from the Great Lakes to the Lower Mississippi Valley. This may also be an area where severe weather pops up Tuesday-Wednesday.

Severe Tuesday

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a MODERATE RISK of severe weather for parts of the Lower Mississippi Valley on Tuesday. Hail, high winds and isolated tornadoes can’t be ruled out. It’ll be a day worth keeping an eye on in you live in the areas highlighted in red or yellow below.

Simulated Radar 12AM Wednesday

Here’s the simulated radar for 12AM Wednesday. Note the robust squal line (potentially strong, straight-line wind producing thunderstorms) that looks to develop from eastern Texas to the middle Mississippi Valley.

Thanks for checking in and have a great rest of your week!
