We’ve talked an awful lot about snow on here the past couple of days – but that trend is due to some pretty significant facts. Fact 1) Some spots have seen record-setting/significant snow droughts come to an end with a foot or more of snow, and Fact 2) Some cities are seeing record-setting *lack* of snow.
Let’s talk snow first, and we’ll start out with a photo from Todd Nelson’s cousin, part of the “Gust” clan of his relatives.Look at the thickness of those tires! Those types of bikes would be absolutely KEY to surviving biking in a significant snow storm.
How about the snow? Well, the Twin Cities (at KMSP airport) you saw over half of last year’s TOTAL snowfall total in one storm!
Check out this photo below… I actually was able to get out and snowshoe around my section of Minneapolis, and saw fog forming over Lake Calhoun – still unfrozen as of yesterday:
In the meantime, there is a seriously LACK of snow in places like Chicago, IL and Milwaukee, WI. Check out these graphics:
The interesting thing for both Milwaukee & Chicago is that they could easily add on to these records, with one caveat. They need to not get snow today. Is this something people in those locations want to see happen? Hard to say, but I’m sure there are at least *some* happy folks out there!
Speaking of Chicago… there are other records within reach, related to a lack of snow. If they don’t see measurable snow today, they will only be a few days away from their latest first measurable snowfall record. That is December 16th.
That record has stood for nearly FIFTY years! Pretty amazing that it could fall.
Here are a couple of other spots seeing lacks of snow, and near-records in the Midwest:
Cedar Rapids, IA
Kind of amazing to see this – as many folks that are only a few short driving hours away (or at least short when there is no snow!) are busy cleaning up a foot or more of snowfall!
If you’re doing any driving today and you ARE in a snow-zone, be careful. We want you to be able to come check out our blog again sometime (maybe tonight or tomorrow again!).
Give yourself extra time to commute and try to enjoy the snow!
