Q&A with Mike Witcher

What inspired you to become a meteorologist and pursue a career as an on-air weather caster?
Believe it or not I accidentally fell into the profession. I got my start in TV as a photojournalist. Worked my way into TV reporting. Then the weekend weather positioned opened up at my station. My news director suggested I try out for the position. Long story short, I got the job but several months into it, I tried to get out. I didn't like it. But, then realized why I didn't like it. I didn't know a thing about weather. So I went back to school to obtain my meteorology degree and worked full time. I have fallen in love with weather and can't see myself doing anything else.
What is your most memorable weather experience?
The April 2011 tornado outbreak in the southeastern US. We were on the air for 9 1/2 hours straight.
Outside of weather what are your hobbies and life interests?
Its great to be back in Colorado because skiing is my passion! I'm ready to hit the slopes. I play soccer and can't wait to join a team! I love to be outside! Hiking, mountain biking or just hanging with my family. I really hate to be stuck indoors!
Besides your parents who has influenced you the most in your life?
I'd have to say, hands down, meteorologist Mike Nelson. He befriended me before I had even landed my first job. He has been a great mentor and friend through the process of broadcast news. I also would say my first news director, Mona Dyer. She believed in me and gave me the opportunity to pursue weather.
What is a little known fact about you?
I've always wanted to be a pilot. One day I will get my private pilots license.
What are your hopes and dreams for the profession of weather?
I hope we can get to a point in technology and science to better warn the public, to save lives and property. I am thankful to be a part of Weather Nation. To not only concentrate on weather locally but nationally.
