She stayed in the northeast for her education, graduating Summa Cum Laude from SUNY Oswego with a B.S. in Meteorology. Just a few days after graduation, she made the cross country move to Colorado Springs, CO to begin her career at KKTV, the CBS affiliate. Lucy has covered historic blizzards, tornadoes, windstorms, the largest wildfires in Colorado state history and dust storms ... they truly "get it all" in Colorado! Above - Moore, Oklahoma tornado damage in May 1999 (Photo: NWS Norman)May 3rd marks the anniversary of a deadly F5 tornado that struck Bridge Creek, Moore, and Oklahoma City, OK in 1999. This year is the 25th anniversary of the historic storm that was on the ground for 38 miles, carving a path of destruction from Chickasha through the southern suburbs of Oklahoma City. Sadly, this one storm left 46 people dead and 800 injured. Over 8,000 homes were destroyed as a result of the EF-5 tornado. The tornado messaging was a first of its kind too, when NWS Norman issued a "tornado emergency" to grab the Public's attention beyond a typical "tornado warning" <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/track-1714753651978.jpg">The tornado cut a path through communities 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile wide. It wiped out entire communities in the Oklahoma City metro. Though the Bridge Creek-Moore tornado was the strongest storm as an F5 there were an additional two F4 tornadoes in central Oklahoma. Six more tornadoes were F3! According to the National Weather Service in Norman, OK, "The final total of 72 tornadoes makes May 3-4, 1999 event the largest outbreak of tornadoes for Oklahoma since official records began in 1950." <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/norman-1714753745770.jpg">Above - Moore, Oklahoma tornado damage in May 1999 (Photo: NWS Norman)This tornado was one of 74 that touched down on May 3, 1999, in Oklahoma and Kansas. Five deaths, 100 injuries and heavy damage were reported from the Wichita, Kansas metro area. For Oklahoma, the majority of deaths from the tornado outbreak occurred as a result of the Bridge-Creek Moore F5, a total of 36 with over 580 injured by the storm. In modern U.S. history, there have only been 59 F5 or EF5 tornadoes, most recently in Moore, OK in 2013. The Fujita (F) scale transitioned to the "Enhanced Fujita" scale (EF) in 2007. According to the<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weather.gov/tae/ef_scale#:~:text=The%20EF%20Scale%20takes%20into,type%2C%20structures%2C%20and%20trees."> National Weather Service</a>, "The EF Scale takes into account more variables than the original F Scale did when assigning a wind speed rating to a tornado. The EF Scale incorporates 28 damage indicators (DIs) such as building type, structures, and trees." There are 8 degrees of damage for each indicator to help survey crews determine storm extent and strength.

Welcome to May! The month normally boasts severe storms, Mother's Day and later sunsets. This weekend will be the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs Saturday evening - and rain could affect things.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Summer countdown-1714568488325.png">A dynamic upper-level low will bring the shot at some storms on Friday to parts of the Ohio River Valley, but models are hinting at a fast moving wave joining the party late Friday night into Saturday. That could meet up with enough moisture to keep scattered showers around northern Kentucky into the first day of the weekend. This is where it could be raining around race-time (below).<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/GFS for KY-1714568498978.png">The Kentucky Derby says on its website that it's a "rain or shine" event, so no delays are expected. However, the conditions could be a little muddy for the horses when the gates open Saturday at 6:57 PM ET.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/kentucky derby daypart-1714568509182.png">

Trotting Around Rain Chances at the 150th Kentucky Derby

More people die from heat every year than ALL other extreme weather COMBINED. So how do you know how hot it is it really going to be?&nbsp;The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration [NOAA] and the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control [CDC] worked collaboratively to produce a new HeatRisk tool rolling out this summer from coast to coast. The tool had previously been used on the West Coast, but the 2024 summer will bring this experimental product to all cities across the U.S. According to Kimberly McMahon, the NWS Public Weather Services Program Manager, "HeatRisk is a great tool to just put into context, how hot it's going to be compared to what they're used to." The HeatRisk scale ranges from minor to extreme impacts and is color-coded from yellow to magenta. For reference, a MINOR impact day is your typical summer day.&nbsp;MODERATE days bring impact to vulnerable populations, especially people who are in the sun for long periods or without A/C. On these days, fans and open windows help to alleviate heat impacts inside.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/major-1713896597233.jpg">MAJOR impact days can be deadly for those without A/C and power interruptions are possible due to the heat stress. Hospitals are likely to see an increase in the number of ER visits due to heat-related illnesses. Outdoor activities should be shifted to cooler times of the day.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/mod-1713896597231.jpg">Finally, EXTREME impact days are for long-duration or potentially record-breaking heat events. There will be little to no relief from the heat overnight... and power outages are likely due to the stress on the grid. Outdoor activities should be canceled, and you should stay in cool spaces.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 2023 during Phoenix's month-long stretch of 100°+ degree days, more people died in their un-air conditions homes than outdoors. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/xtreme-1713896597235.jpg">The HeatRisk tool incorporated heat forecast and historical data from NOAA to include: how above normal the temperatures are, the time of year, the duration of the heat, and overnight relief potential.&nbsp;It also considers at what temperature heat deaths occur for over 700 cities in the U.S.. That data was imperative in designing the tool to know at what level heat becomes deadly, unique to geographic location. For example, Phoenix's 110°, though hot, wouldn't be an "extreme" day during the summer. Take that same 110° but for Chicago? The risk becomes extreme. Look for the new HeatRisk product and temperature forecasts this summer on WeatherNationTV. National Park Week started Saturday, April 20th, and runs through Sunday, April 28th, It is a week to celebrate the over <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.nps.gov/findapark/index.htm">400 National Parks</a>! Throughout the week, parks will host events to highlight the unique nature of the parks, how you can volunteer, and the innovation happening across the country. National Park Week also encompasses Earth Day, on Monday, April 22nd.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/nps-1713740968123.png">At WeatherNation we spoke to some of the most popular, and lesser-known, national parks across the U.S. and highlighted them in our "Get Out and Explore" series.<h2>Catoctin Mountain Park (Maryland)</h2>This mountain park sits near the hustle and bustle of East Coast cities such as D.C. and Philly and allows people to explore the great outdoors and reconnect with nature. The heavily forested park offers hiking, camping, stargazing, and more. This park boasts incredible wildlife and views as well as some of Alaska’s extreme weather.&nbsp;<div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/U3IM3w8M1Yc?si=i22NXFs0uVL_TX3y" start="0"></iframe></div><h2>Lava Beds National Park (N. California)</h2>Sitting just south of Oregon, Lava Beds National Monument is surrounded by volcanos. Visitors can explore lava tubes ranging in difficulty from easy to expert. This gives people a chance to explore the “volcanic plumbing” of the region. &nbsp;<div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/6c0aGmAgC38?si=BPzHjKS7iBSK5K3X" start="0"></iframe></div><h2>Black Canyon of the Gunnison N.P. (Colorado)</h2>Black Canyon of the Gunnison is the steepest and narrowest canyon of the entire U.S. and sits in Southwest Colorado. National Park Week: Get Out and Explore

Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. Across the northern tier of the United States, we have Mars, Uranus, Neptune, Saturn, Pluto, and Blue Earth to name a few. Forecast highs will bump out of the near-freezing mark the morning will bring us for many of these cities.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/north-1713810377590.png">Across the southern U.S., we have Mercury, Venus, Globe, Jupiter, Saturn, and Pluto. Monday, April 22nd - Earth Day!

The Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes (CW3E) took a look back at the number of atmospheric rivers of the 2023-2024 season starting when the water year began in October.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/Slide1-1712842543982.png">An atmospheric river is a concentrated plume of moisture in the mid-levels of the atmosphere that transports large amounts of moisture onshore. When the plume hits the higher elevations of the West Coast the moisture then falls in the form of rain and snow. Atmospheric rivers are responsible for large rain and snow accumulation during the Winter and Spring months and are essential for filling reservoirs on the West Coast.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/2024-04-11 07-55-48-1712843811769.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>A total of 51 Atmospheric Rivers hit the West Coast this year, including two extreme events, one on December 5th along the Washington/Oregon border and another on January 31st in Oregon. Far more were the number of moderate atmospheric rivers that hit up and down the West Coast. This year the vast majority of landfilling ARs were in Washington, Oregon, and northern California, in part because of an ENSO neutral pattern where the Pacific Jet is typically aligned with the Northwest.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/ENOS-1712844476092.jpg">Though 2023-2024 had 13 more atmospheric rivers than the impactful 2022-23 season, this year brought a smaller number of extreme AR events and fewer to southern and central California (due to the jet stream track mentioned above). The 2022-23 season's few numbers of extreme AR events mean the state of California was at 200% of the average for precipitation. The 2023-24 season, though characterized by fewer strong and extreme events had plenty of weak ARs to leave the states at or slightly above precipitation for the winter months.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/AR scla-1712844476095.jpg">So what does this mean for California's all important reservoirs? At last update, reservoirs are at 117% of average state-wide thanks to slightly above average rainfall this winter and snowpack sitting at 111% of average state-wide. For the most up to date conditions on reservoirs and snowpack, you can visit California's <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://cww.water.ca.gov/">tracking page here</a>. There is concern for ground water supply, especially in the central valley where soil moisture is dry as of mid-April. Snowmelt in the Spring should help to boost those levels. According to the CW3E, "The strongest atmospheric river to impact Central and Southern California occurred on February 4-6 ... Downtown Los Angeles received 8.51 inches of rain, which was the second wettest 3-day stretch on record. This event was a great example how only a few strong storms over Southern California can make or break a water year." The heavy rain caused <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/major-flood-event-expected-in-california">numerous water rescues</a> around the city of L.A. with tornado warnings just east of San Diego. Mudslides and debris flow around the L.A. suburbs also closed roadways and created damage for neighborhoods. In the mountains, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/heavy-snow-in-california">impressive snowfall</a> came down in the Sierra Nevada!<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1754995886403518971" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1754995886403518971"></div>Another notable atmospheric river event was in early December 2023, when an extreme AR hit Oregon and Washington state. West Coast Wet Season Ending: Looking Back at Storms

First ... Solar eclipses only happen during a new moon when the moon and sun are on the same side of the Earth.&nbsp;Second ... The Moon's orbit around the Earth is a bit tilted meaning its shadow doesn’t always line up with Earth. For a total solar eclipse to happen, the Earth, Sun, and Moon need to be in a straight line with the moon placed directly between the Earth and Sun which happens only twice a year.&nbsp;&nbsp;Even though the moon is 400 times smaller than the sun, its closer position to the Earth allows it to block out the sun when everything aligns.&nbsp;&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/03/setup1-1711639803722.jpg">Depending on the position of the moon, totality can vary in length. This year we will be dark for an average of 3 ½ to 4 minutes. Carving a path from Del Rio TX to Burlington VT with the cities of Dallas, Little Rock, Indianapolis, Cleveland and Buffalo all in the path of totality.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/03/path-1711638247652.jpg">#2 This will be a total solar eclipse, where the moon blocks ALL the sun’s light. They are rippling waves of light and darkness that give a “movie-esq” effect.</li><li>No matter where you're watching from in the U.S., all of us will see some level of eclipse coverage. Instead of looking, up, turn your gaze down, and you’ll see tiny crescent shadows on the ground! Eclipses have been around since the beginning of time, and so have the legends that go along with them. We are bringing you some of the stories and cultural significance of total solar eclipses around the world in this WeatherNation web exclusive.In Ancient China, eclipses were believed to be a dragon trying to eat the sun, and people needed to make as much noise as possible to scare it off.&nbsp;The Chinese would bang pots and pans to try and scare the dragon away.For West African tribes, the Batammaliba people in Togo and Benin, the cosmic event is the result of the sun and moon fighting and trying to resolve their differences. They believed it meant that communities on Earth should come together and resolve their conflicts too.&nbsp;Indigenous tribes across North America have their eclipse traditions as well. Kit grew up in the Piedmont of North Carolina outside of Charlotte, spending most of his childhood in Belmont, an old mill town on the Catawba River now grown into a bustling suburb. He had a passion for mathematics and science through grade school, having ambitions to become an architect, engineer, theoretical/astrophysicist, or geologist, but eventually choosing to pursue Meteorology. He went to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to obtain his degree, taking all electives on atmospheric sensing, tropical, and mesoscale meteorology for a full, in-depth understanding of the atmosphere (though he maintains on every hike, he should have taken more geology classes!) He interned at WCNC in Charlotte, learning the craft of presenting off-script and how to tell a weather story. After Graduation, he worked in the Quad Cities at WHBF-TV and KLJB-TV, the CBS/Fox affiliates. From there, he moved to Grand Island, Nebraska at KSNB-TV, the NBC affiliate for Central Nebraska. The active winters and severe seasons kept him busy, experiencing a wide range of wild weather. He remembers the most impactful event in March of 2019, when a massive snowmelt, heavy rain, and blizzard all struck the state in 36 hours. Kit later moved to the Denver area taking a job as a Producer with WeatherNation. At 10:23am EDT Friday morning, residents in New Jersey felt some moderate shaking of the earth beneath them. A M4.8 Earthquake struck, with an epicenter in Northeast Hunterdon County, about 8 miles northwest of Bridgewater.<img src="https://earthquake.usgs.gov/realtime/product/dyfi/us7000ma74/us/1712331453719/us7000ma74_ciim_geo.jpg" alt="DYFI intensity map">Light to moderate shaking was reported to the USGS near the epicenter and in New York City, with very weak shaking as far as Baltimore, MD, Harrisburg, PA, and Springfield, MA.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/SOT_040524_TRT 0.26_RNE_LEHIGH VALLEY, PA_ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE VIDEO OF THIS GUY SAYING IT'S GONNA BE A NICE DAY THEN FREAKS OUT ABOUT EARTHQUAKE. CURSING REMOVED_SF_RICHARD SNYDER_NC_E040524-1712336556497.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Later in the afternoon Friday, an aftershock earthquake occurred in the same location and caused more shaking. The aftershock was a little weaker, but still registered a 3.8.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/Earthquake-1712370819822.jpg">Earthquakes are not unheard of in this part of the country. In the 18th and 19th centuries, New York City has sustained damage from earthquakes. East Coast damaging quakes come out to a rough average of twice per century. In August of 2011, a M5.8 earthquake struck Northern Virginia, causing shaking from Georgia to New England, and even some minor shaking as far west as Chicago!East Coast earthquakes are less frequent than on the West Coast, but they can be felt much farther away due to the differences in the rock composition. According to the USGS, "a magnitude 4.0 eastern U.S. earthquake typically can be felt at many places as far as 100 km (60 mi) from where it occurred."<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/VO_040524_RNE_MORRISTOWN, NJ_RING CAMERA CATCHES SHAKING FROM EARTHQUAKE_STORYFUL_JEREMY GODWIN_KW_E040524-1712336577279.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>There is still a chance for aftershocks, which are smaller quakes occurring after an initial shock. Statistically speaking, there is a 50% chance of another quake of magnitude 4.0, though that statistic is mainly used for larger earthquakes so aftershocks are more likely to be much weaker. Earthquake Jostles New Jersey

Colorado State University has released its outlook for the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season, calling for an above-average season for named storms, hurricanes, and major hurricanes. CSU Forecasters, under the leadership of Hurricane Researcher Phil Klotzbach, attribute the above-average forecast to the La Niña conditions expected in the equatorial Pacific Ocean and warmer than average sea surface temperatures in addition to activity from the West African Monsoon. CSU uses "analog" years, or reference years that show similar characteristics to this one; 2024's reference years are 1878, 1926, 1998, 2010, and 2020, all above average years. <video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/PKG_040324_TRT 3.50_CSU HURRICANE SEASON FORECAST_ROB BRADLEY_NJ_040324-1712238044793.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Atlantic hurricane season officially begins on June 1 every year, with the Eastern Pacific Hurricane season beginning on May 15. The National Hurricane Center begins issuing tropical outlooks for both basins on May 15. The first name on the list in the Atlantic is Alberto, followed by Beryl. CSU forecasters call for 23 named storms, but the official list only has 21 names. In the past, the National Hurricane Center would revert to the Greek Alphabet, but following confusion in the 2020 season. Now, there is an alternative list of names that span the alphabet again with the first three of Adria, Braylen, and Caridad.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/names-1712236967550.jpg">A La Niña is characterized by cooler-than-average sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, which interacts with the atmosphere to produce less shear over the tropical Atlantic. Less shear means storms don't get "pulled apart" and have a better chance of surviving in the Atlantic Ocean. The last time we were in La Niña was in 2022, a hurricane season that was above average.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/la nina outlook-1712236967549.jpg">The 2023 season was influenced by El Niño conditions which typically suppress hurricane season, but warmer than average sea surface temperatures balanced out the influence to give us a generally, average season in 2023.Sea surface temperatures are also a huge factor in this year's forecast. Warm ocean waters help to develop thunderstorms that then congeal into hurricanes. Climatologically, sea surface temps are at their warmest in September, when there are peaks of energy off of the coast of Africa.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/2024-04-04 07-19-57-1712237500749.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Remember, these are just outlooks and Klotzbach says, "it's important to realize that, you know, this is our first forecast. Historically, the skill is modest just because we're still quite a ways from the events we're trying to predict. Hurricane season doesn't really ramp up historically until August. So we still have a few months to go before the season really ramps up. Atlantic Hurricane Season 2024: Expected to be Well Above Average

A strong 7.4 magnitude earthquake shook the country of Taiwan early Wednesday morning, close to 8:00 local time (8 PM Tuesday night for the U.S. East Coast). Multiple casualties have been reported with hundreds injured. Dozens of buildings collapsed as the city shook.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/VON_040424_INTL_HUALIEN,TAIWAN_HOTEL SHOWING IMMENSE DAMAGE AFTER POWERFUL EARTHQUAKE_STORYFUL_DO_E040324-1712147940483.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The earthquake was located about 10 miles off Hualian on Taiwan's east coast and was about 20 miles deep. The quake even prompted evacuation advisories around Okinawa from the Japan Meteorological Agency, which they later lifted. Powerful Earthquake in Rocks Taiwan

Severe storms slammed the Midwest and Mid-South on Tuesday, producing widespread wind, hail, and tornadoes. The tornado surveys will be coming in the next few days as National Weather Service officials are able to determine the damage. Some of the more notable storm cells and tornado warnings from Tuesday that we will monitor include Charleston, WV, Louisville, KY, Lexington, KY and Sunbright TN. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1775225434520563737" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1775225434520563737"></div>On Tuesday morning, this student was caught in a storm and was completely knocked off their feet at the University of Kentucky. Winds were clocked in West Virginia and Kentucky at over 90 mph - that's hurricane-strength winds. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1775218786854982038" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1775218786854982038"></div>One of the more powerful storms was a tornado that tracked from Southeast Ohio into central West Virginia, producing widespread damage for communities on both sides of the Ohio River. Tornadoes Rip through Midwest Tuesday

The severe weather threat continues today as it moves to the east. This article has all the information on the risk today and tomorrow: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/midwest-at-risk-of-tornadoes-hail-this-week">Storms Shift into the Midwest.</a>The central and southern U.S. were pummeled by storms on Monday. Briar, TX, which is about 25 miles northwest of Fort Worth, TX, saw grapefruit-sized hail! That's about 4.5" in diameter! Even portions of Kansas dealt with baseball-sized hail.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/hail-1712056388862.png">Sights like this one were a familiar one across a handful of states. This video came out of Cole County, MO where a variety of hailstone sizes were seen from a severe thunderstorm warning. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1774981033563209765" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1774981033563209765"></div>We had multiple severe storm reports, with hail and wind being the most common ones across the board. Grapefruit Hail Pummels Plains, Midwest

A slow-moving cold front will hit moist, unstable air over the Gulf Coast states prompting an ENHANCED risk over central Texas for the entire I-35 corridor on Thursday. Individual supercells develop with strong updrafts that can rotate and produce tornadoes. This is the most populated area in Texas under a large hail and tornado risk - try to park your car under cover and have multiple ways to get alerts.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/tx enhanced-1715252072518.jpg">In the afternoon and evening, a cold front will aid new storm cells along the I-35 corridor of Texas through southern Oklahoma. These storms form into a cluster, moving into central Louisiana and Mississippi with damaging winds and embedded tornadoes. While storms are individual they will contain a damaging hail threat, but once they group the threat shifts to hurricane-force winds between I-10 and I-20.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-09 04-54-59-1715252130012.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The lethargic frontal boundary will set up further south on Thursday, focusing more showers and thunderstorms from Texas to Georgia. With eastern Texas and western Louisiana getting drenched over the past few weeks, flash flooding will be easier to find in that part of the Deep South.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/saturated-1715198614916.jpg">A SLIGHT RISK has been issued (below) from Shreveport to far western Alabama, with 2-3" of rain and locally higher amounts possible on Thursday with the flood threat continuing in the Southeast Friday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/rainfall outlok-1715252046239.jpg">

Baseball Hail in Texas Possible Thursday

This weekend will be wet and cool in the Northeast thanks to a weak clipper that will slide through the Great Lakes and into the Northeast on Friday and Saturday. There is enough moisture to support a few rain showers and certainly cloud cover which will keep temperatures on the cooler side.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-09 08-34-51-1715266248443.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Highs could be at record cool levels - only in the 50s along the Jersey shore. It will feel more like March than May this weekend! We hope you haven't put away your warmer gear yet.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/temps-1715266454199.jpg">A few stronger storms are possible in Wisconsin and Minnesota with severe weather potential. The primary threat will be damaging winds and hail. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/severe gl-1715276611162.jpg">Rain showers won't be anything to write home about but more of a nuisance for many cities in the Great Lakes Friday afternoon and evening and in the Northeast throughout the weekend. We won't see widespread heavy rain, but the focus for more consistent rain will be in western NY, PA, and New Jersey. Accumulations will be on the order of 1-2" for central Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. These areas are generally saturated after recent storms so the flood risk for rivers, creeks, and streams will be elevated.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-09 08-35-23-1715266351275.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>

Weekend Forecast: Feeling Like March in the Northeast

The town of Barnsdall, OK took a direct hit from a confirmed tornado in the evening hours. Sights like this are truly heartbreaking, and unfortunately, daylight brought more images of destruction in Barnsdall, roughly 40 miles north of Tulsa. Initial surveys from the National Weather Service office in Tulsa, confirm<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://twitter.com/NWStulsa/status/1787953782485381377?t=zcmnAmqzx1omBhEkB3hh1Q&amp;s=19"> EF-4 tornado damage</a> in the town with much of the area seeing EF-3. The storm was on the ground for 39 miles from Barnsdall to Bartlesville. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1787822187518292269" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1787822187518292269"></div>A tornado emergency was issued as the storm was moving through the town, which is the highest level of tornado warning that the National Weather Service can issue. Sadly, one person was killed by this storm. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1787675654689104015" src="https://twitter.com/NWStornado/status/1787675654689104015"></div>Our field crews were some of the first on the scene in the town to help people escape from their collapsed homes. This is the second EF-4 tornado to hit Oklahoma in less than 2 weeks - <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/more-destructive-tornadoes-touch-down-in-oklahoma">an EF-4 touched down in a tornado outbreak April 27-28</a> hitting the town of Marietta, OK closer to Oklahoma City. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1787707820143419707" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1787707820143419707"></div>The Storm Prediction Center issued a HIGH risk for severe weather on Monday. The risk is the highest threat level the severe weather outlook goes up to (level 5 out of 5). The last time a storm threat of this magnitude was issued was on March 31, 2023. It covered much of the I-35 corridor including Oklahoma City and Guthrie. It lined up very well with where the high risk was issued between the two states. Most of the reports were from large to giant hailstones and strong, damaging winds showing up in the yellow and blue dots below. A few tornadoes touched down in the Plains, indicated by the reports in the red dots.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/svr high-1715094628616.jpg">Hailstones the size of SOFTBALLS fell in Moonlight, Kansas on Monday. EF-4 Tornado Hit Oklahoma Monday, May 6

The severe weather threat seems never-ending in the Deep South and more storms are likely into Friday. The weather comes in two batches: the first is during the day today as severe weather leftover from Wednesday night drops out of Tennessee. The tornado threat is elevated with this first cluster of storms and a TORNADO WATCH is in effect through the evening. A second round of storms comes from the west along the cold front <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/tornado-threat-over-texas-thursday">overnight from storms in Texas</a>.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/se tor-1715275035002.jpg">A complex of storms in north Georgia, upstate South Carolina, and northern Alabama is moving southeast, packing a punch of strong winds (gusts over 60 mph) and embedded tornadoes. By the afternoon it will be closing in on the southeast coast of Georgia and South Carolina with a few storms stretching back into south Alabama.Storm development over Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana moves across the I-20 corridor late Thursday night into Friday morning. Hurricane-force winds will be possible with this complex, especially between I-20 and I-10 in Mississippi and Alabama including Jackson, Montgomery, Columbus, and Dothan. If you live in Alabama, Georgia, or Mississippi please have multiple ways to get alerts before you go to bed. On Friday the complex will push offshore with more storms moving closer to the I-10 corridor before finally moving offshore late afternoon.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-09 07-05-04-1715260002889.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>As a result of the multiple rounds of severe storms, the Storm Prediction Center has issued an ENHANCED risk on Thursday through the Deep South. Wherever there is RED is the opportunity to see 60+ mph wind gusts with both rounds of storms. We likely see wind gusts over 75 mph with the overnight storms Thursday into Friday for central -southern Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia for the areas under the black "hatch".<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/se wind-1715275076965.jpg">To account for the severe weather potential in the form of damaging winds and tornadoes, there is a SLIGHT risk out from the SPC for Friday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/spc fri-1715251491294.jpg">

Hurricane-Force Wind, Tornadoes in the Deep South

The snow has been falling in the Northwest with nearly two feet of snow already fallen in Wyoming and over a foot for much of Montana!<div class="fb-post" data-href="https://www.facebook.com/WeatherNation/videos/1261262411517962" data-width="500" src="https://www.facebook.com/WeatherNation/videos/1261262411517962" style="display: flex; justify-content: center"></div>The snow is starting to slide back to the south and west as our area of low pressure responsible for the wet weather moves into the Rockies and Four Corners. The low breaks off from the normal flow and shifts southwest, away from the typical jet stream flow. This low will then sit and spin over the 4 Corners region through the weekend, bringing more gusty wind but a bit more moisture to the atmosphere too. Even if you don't see showers we anticipate a bit more cloud cover through the end of the week and the start of the weekend, which should help to quell the worst of our fire danger.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-08 08-51-01-1715179957991.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Colder air at the highest elevations will produce snowfall in the Rockies of Colorado and the ranges of Wyoming. As low-pressure regresses (moves back to the west), the snowfall spreads south into northern New Mexico, the ranges of Utah, and even northern Arizona. Showers and snow showers are possible through the weekend, especially in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. This is thanks to a "backdoor cold front" meaning it arrives from the east, rather than the typical west. It will also stir up strong winds along the Front Range of Colorado and New Mexico Thursday night into Friday. Pop-up storms will be the focus for the Eastern Plains of Colorado, New Mexico, and west Texas through Monday morning before our low-pressure system gets a kick to the east.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-09 08-12-52-1715264042373.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Rough estimates show the heaviest of the snowfall in the Rockies of Colorado and the Sangre de Cristo range into northern New Mexico. Rainfall will be on the order of 1" in isolated pockets. Late Season Snowfall Continues Out West

The primary concern from Wednesday's storms was damaging winds and tornadoes, unfortunately, both of which occurred over the populated mid-South, hitting the southern St. Louis suburbs and communities both north and south of Nashville. Multiple, confirmed tornadoes hit the mid-South on Wednesday creating widespread damage and destruction. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1788392193054400999" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1788392193054400999"></div>There was a tornado emergency issued along I-65 south of Nashville for the tornado seen at the top of the page. The county declared it a "mass casualty" event following the storm meaning that massive amounts of resources were needed to rescue people from trapped and collapsed buildings. Our field crews were on the scene soon after the storm showing roofs ripped off homes and major trees collapsed. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1788380868438081823" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1788380868438081823"></div>Earlier in the afternoon, Clarksville, TN was hit by multiple tornadoes. This area of Tennesee is still recovering from an EF-3 that killed nine in December of 2023, less than 3 months ago. The tornado that hit the south side of the city just before 4 PM on Wednesday was responsible for additional damage in communities north of Nashville. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1788403520871526644" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1788403520871526644"></div>There was an elevated threat of tornadoes, hail, and damaging winds. The "significant" severe threat included Nashville, Huntsville, Jonesboro and Fort Smith for EF-2 or stronger tornadoes. Late Wednesday night the city of Huntsville, AL was at threat of multiple tornadoes, just minutes apart. We are waiting to hear more about damage in the northern Alabama city. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1788407951226438034" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1788407951226438034"></div>Not only was severe weather a threat but also flash flooding - the weather balloon launch in Nashville on Wednesday showed about twice as much moisture throughout the atmosphere vs normal (about 1.5" of precipitable water). With a few rounds of storms over some of the same locations, grounds became saturated with upwards of 4" of rain in 24 hours. A flash flood emergency was issued in Springfield, TN along the Kentucky border due to the fast water rise. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1788524315740082492" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1788524315740082492"></div>Wednesday was another extremely active severe weather day with multiple confirmed tornadoes spread across the Midwest and Midsouth. Mid-South Cleaning up After Tornadoes, Flooding Wednesday

Preliminary data from the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) suggests that April 2024 was the second-highest tornado count on record. This surpasses the average number of April tornadoes which stands at 182 touchdowns across the country for the month. The year 2011 holds the record of 757 tornadoes in April alone, and I am not the only one who is thankful we didn't see nearly that many.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/April Tor Comp-1714921143566.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>While many of these tornadic storms across the Great Plains may have been photogenic, they are responsible for excessive damage strewn across states like Nebraska, Iowa, Oklahoma, and Texas.On average, Mississippi, Alabama, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas see the most tornadoes in April. Last month hit Nebraska and Iowa hard, which is not the norm this time of year.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Screenshot 2024-02-25 110543-1714921317847.jpg">May is known to bring the most tornadoes we see each year. Considering how active April was, it will be interesting to see how the upcoming month turns out. April Brought 300 Tornadoes, Second-Most On Record

A trio of supercells then moved through southwest Michigan (top of the page). Portage took what looked like a direct hit from one of the tornadic storms, producing the expansive damage below. NWS Grand Rapids conducted their survey and concluded the damage was from a EF-2 with winds of 135mph. Those severe storms made it to Chicago shortly after 2:00 PM. Severe Weather Mauls the Midwest Tuesday

It feels like summer with temperatures rising across the Gulf Coast this week thanks to a strong ridge of high pressure that is parked across the region. Temperatures will be warm enough to tie or break records through Friday, with Wednesday being our warmest day. Widespread 90's are expected with records as old as the 1980s at risk of falling.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Potential records Wednesday-1715170367786.png">The warmth impacts Texas and the central Gulf into Wednesday with highs warmest south of I-10, but even Little Rock climbs close to 90°. The humidity will make it feel even warmer for Houston, San Antonio, and Corpus Christi. It's so hot that the NWS office in Brownsville and Corpus Christi have issued Heat Advisories for Wednesday! Temperatures will cool by Thursday for north and central Texas as a cold front slides through. That will cut temperatures down to the 70's, where they typically are this time of year.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/south central temps-1715115527668.jpg">Our peak heat in the eastern Gulf will be Thursday but highs will be threatened on Wednesday and Friday too. On Friday nearly every major city on the Atlantic coastline has the potential to tie or break records. We're looking at widespread highs in the 80s and 90s, about 10° above average!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/se-1715115527665.jpg">

Record Highs in Jeopardy Along the Gulf Coast

The Southwest has been dry and windy the last few days with gusts with Aspen and Loveland Pass clocking wind gusts over 65 mph on Tuesday. Tropical storm and hurricane-force winds were seen in New Mexico on Monday - Raton Pass clocked a wind gust of 59 mph with Tecolotito about 120 miles east of Albuquerque. The strong winds in combination with dry conditions mean the fire threat continues across the Southwest into Wednesday and Thursday - please do not do any outdoor burning.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/fire alerts-1715180021085.jpg">Changes are on the way as an area of low pressure in our upper atmosphere breaks off from the normal flow and shifts southwest, away from the typical jet stream flow. This low will then sit and spin over the 4 Corners region through the weekend, bringing more gusty wind but a bit more moisture to the atmosphere too. Four Corners: Windy with a Chance of Showers

After multiple spots in southeast Texas received one to two FEET of rain in just 24 hours in the last week, many instances of extreme flooding are ongoing. Roads are washed out, rivers and creeks are running high with water still standing over roads in some spots, and major flooding is expected to continue along rivers over the next few days. This video was taken about 20 miles north of Houston, in Humble, TX. Please remember, turn around, don't drown.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1786848270972489808" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1786848270972489808"></div>More heavy rain and flooding are expected to close out the weekend in southeast Texas. A moderate risk (level 3 out of 4) is issued for Houston and Lufkin.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/05-05_through tonight wpc-1714938620711.png">This level 3 out of 4 on the flood risk scale indicates that numerous flash floods are likely, with some significant flash flooding possible. This area corresponds with the already-flooded part of the state with standing water and rivers still in a major flood stage (see top of page).<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/mod flood-1714904806947.png">The heavy rainfall threat will continue across Texas due to the oversaturation of soils. Rain totals by the end of the weekend will be anywhere from 1-3" overall, but pockets of 4-5" are possible where multiple rounds of storms come through. Flooding will be expected in areas of southeast Texas already hard-hit by flooding earlier this week. Never drive through flooded roads!

Flood Threat Winding Down for the Lone Star State

Despite seeing strong storms on Saturday, what seems like a never-ending severe weather threat is ongoing in the Lone Star State. Reports of a few touchdowns of tornadoes came out of places like Kermit and Fort Stockton, TX Saturday.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1786866266076041461" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1786866266076041461"></div>The hail that some of these severe storms brought was nothing to mess around with. Kermit and Randalls Corner had to deal with softball-sized hail throughout Saturday afternoon and evening.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Screenshot 2024-05-05 045825-1714906764420.png">The severe weather threat will be limited overnight in south Texas, Arkansas, and Mississippi. Tornado Hits West Texas, Isolated Storms Tonight

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. It's the second day in a row cities in the northeast broke record high temperatures. Not as many records were broken Tuesday, but areas like D.C. and Binghamton, NY got high enough to break previous records. Temperatures will return closer to seasonal by Friday for many locations. Although, some spots do stay warmer.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/Screenshot 2024-04-30 164300-1714516987092.png">Showers and storms swept across the northeast with multiple severe warned storms. We still have the chance of a few isolated severe storms overnight with the potential of strong winds and large hail. A few areas have already seen some larger hailstones reaching 1".<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/FJKJFKLJ-1714526195784.png">Showers and storms will wrap up overnight. Record Highs Hit in the Northeast, Isolated Severe Remains

UPDATE: The National Weather Service out of Norman, Oklahoma, has upgraded the rating of the Marietta tornado to EF-4 with estimated peak winds of 165-170 mph, a path length of 27 miles, and a path width of 900 yards. Unfortunately, this tornado brought at least one fatality to Love County. This tornado developed southwest of Marietta and moved north-northeast over I-25 before moving into Marietta towards Lake Murray and Dickson.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1785021848498876600" src="https://twitter.com/NWSNorman/status/1785021848498876600"></div>Here's a look at the destruction our field corresponded Brandon Clement observed upon daylight on Sunday.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1784689042388668902" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1784689042388668902"></div>The town of Sulphur, OK also took a direct hit from a destructive tornado on Saturday night, with a rating of at least EF3. At Least 33 Tornadoes Reported in Oklahoma this Weekend

Several teams of meteorologists and storm damage experts are actively investigating and surveying damage from Friday, April 26 across the I-80 corridor. According to the National Weather Service of Omaha, at least 5 EF-3 tornadoes have been confirmed.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/04-29 nws omaha-1714445003827.png">It all started when a tornado touched down in Lincoln, NE, just before 3 PM central time on Friday. This storm was tornado-warned for more than 50 miles as it tore through suburbs of the Omaha metro and eventually moved across the Missouri River and into Iowa. It has been confirmed as an EF-3 on the ground for 8.6 miles and with winds of 158 mph. This tornado struck Waverly, NE, a suburb on the NE side of Lincoln, where it derailed a train.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1783955995875565622" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1783955995875565622"></div>An EF-3 tornado was confirmed in Elkhorn, NE on the west side of Omaha. Winds were at 165 mph with this tornado. After the tornado moved through, our field crews observed high-tension power lines snapped in Elkhorn, NE, outside of Omaha. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1784243608318595371" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1784243608318595371"></div>There was a "tornado emergency" issued for the northern suburbs of Omaha, NE, at around 3:45 PM CT Friday as a result of the Elkhorn tornado storm cell. This is the highest level of tornado warning the National Weather Service can issue and signals that there is a confirmed tornado on the ground and an extremely dangerous situation unfolding. A traffic camera in the Omaha area caught the tornado. Another tornado warning was issued for Omaha, including downtown, and damage was confirmed in the region. Additional surveys will be conducted to determine the strength of tornadoes in Omaha. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1783961145100980348" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1783961145100980348"></div>Not only were there confirmed tornadoes in Nebraska, but numerous tornadoes also struck Iowa, impacting western and Central Iowa.
