Q&A with Lucy Bergemann
About Lucy:
Lucy is a digital meteorologist for WeatherNationTV, joining the team from Southeast Alabama where she lives with her husband. Lucy covers the digital and social platforms for WeatherNation as well as severe weather through the South & in weekly "Trending Topics" segments on-air. Lucy is originally from the Boston area and joined the WeatherNation team in the Spring of 2021 as an on-air meteorologist. She loved living and forecasting in Colorado - working in Colorado Springs, CO at the CBS affiliate, KKTV, right after college. Lucy graduated Summa Cum Laude from SUNY Oswego with a B.S. in Meteorology. Lucy has covered historic blizzards, tornadoes, windstorms, the largest wildfires in Colorado state history and dust storms ... they truly "get it all" in Colorado! Lucy loves forecasting on a national level and continue her passion of explaining the science behind the weather!
What inspired you to become a meteorologist?
I am passionate about the science behind the weather, but even more passionate about explaining it to viewers! I got into broadcasting to impact the community and the public with the science education. I want to help people understand the "WHYS" of weather.
What is your most memorable weather experience?
In December 2005, I experienced "thundersnow" for the first time in the Boston, MA area. That storm produced 3 FEET of snow. I remember being so fascinated that it could thunder while snowing and having a "snow day" the following. I also remember my family's van getting stuck in the snow ... but less favorably. That event got me interested in the weather, where becoming a meteorologist naturally followed.
Outside of weather, what are your hobbies and interests?
I have been a competitive figure skater for over 15 years of my life. Although, I have stepped away from the competitive side of things, I still coach at local rinks. I LOVE watching my students grow and develop on and off the ice! Living in Colorado, I also love to get outdoors, hiking and biking whenever possible.
Besides your parents, who has influenced you the most in your life?
I would say my weather mentors and former figure skating coaches. My former coaches and current mentors have really instilled in me what it means to be passionate, poised and professional in my personal life as well as on air.
What is a little known fact about you?
I am a "Guinness Book of World Records Holder"! In the Spring of 2017 I participated on the longest conga line on ice at SUNY Oswego as part of a record setting challenge with Al Roker!
What are your hopes and dreams for the profession of weather?
I think that understanding the weather is crucial to people to help plan and prepare for current weather or upcoming events. Weather technology has grown tremendously even within the last 10-15 years and I’m excited to see how much more precise the science can get in the future.
