Arctic Sunrises & Sundogs
What the heck are these things…? We had a number of wonderful pictures sent in across the Midwest of the sunrise today after the latest snowstorm, take a look!
Winter is one of my favorite times of the year because of these types of images being a little more common. Sundogs form when there is a higher concentration of ice crystals present in the atmosphere. These plate-like ice crystals tend to reflect the sunlight into the images seen above.

Some also asked where the term Sundog comes from.
Much like a dog is always at your side, the reflection also maintains its position by the sun even when moving.
