Cold Night in the Plains! Frost and Freeze to Start the Weekend

27 Oct 2017, 4:53 pm

Cold air is plunging through the mid section of the nation, from the Upper Midwest to the Southern Plains. Many areas will see their first frost and freeze and an end to the growing season. More than a dozen states are under frost and freeze alerts into Saturday morning. Temperatures will fall into the 20s as far south as the Texas Panhandle. Readings will remain well below average through the weekend.

A strong trough in the upper levels of the atmosphere is digging the Jet Stream well to the south, pushing the cold temperatures across most of the Plains. A strong area of high pressure is dropping into the region behind a cold front. This will produce a clear sky, calm winds, and dry air – perfect ingredients for a frost and freeze.
