Cold Springs Fire Doubles on Sunday; Major Evacuations

A major wildfire has forced nearly 2,000 evacuations in Boulder County, Colorado amidst record high temperatures and dry and windy weather across much of the Southwest.

The Cold Springs Fire started on Saturday afternoon, with WeatherNation affiliate 9News in Denver reporting that two men have been arrested for arson in potentially starting the wildfire, which grew quickly on Saturday due to a dangerous combination of gusty winds and a hot, dry airmass.

As of Sunday evening, the fire had no containment while roughly doubling in size to over 600 acres on Sunday.

The heat across the Southwest is likely largely to blame for the fire’s quick growth. Denver broke a daily record on Sunday afternoon, reaching 102°, only three degrees shy of its all-time warmest temperature on record.

The fire’s forecast, however, is ominous, with hot temperatures, gusty winds and low dewpoints expected to make firefighting efforts difficult on Monday before conditions gradually improve by mid-week.
