Deadly Van, Texas Tornado Rated an EF-3
At least two people are dead and over 100 homes are estimated to have been damaged in the east Texas town of Van following a strong tornado on Sunday night.
The National Weather Service office in Fort Worth, Texas assessed the storm on Monday morning and found EF-3 damage in the town of 2,600 people, with top winds estimated to be around 140 miles-an-hour. The tornado moved through the town about 75 miles east of Dallas just before 9pm on Sunday night, damaging an estimated 30 percent of the town.
Forty-seven people were taken to area hospitals, with at least two critically injured, according to Dallas TV station WFAA-TV. Three people are still missing from the tornado, down from earlier reports of 10.
The deadly tornado came at the end of an active weekend of severe weather, where 80 preliminary tornado reports were issued between Saturday and Sunday.
The severe weather threat appears to be lower through mid-week, but stronger storms could return to the region by the end of the week.
