Drought conditions have plagued the High Plains for most of 2017. The ground from Montana through the Dakotas has been parched of any form of moisture for months. Although we have received a few snow flurries in the past couple of weeks, this week’s system is a welcomed sight.
Not only will this arctic blast bring back the taste of winter in the High Plains, but it brings the chance of rain back to the Ouachita and Ozark Mountains in Arkansas. This being another location where Mother Nature has neglected to bring any rain or snow.
As this week’s system marches to the east, snowfall of four inches to a foot will certainly help the High Plains drought. Although this moisture will be beneficial, we need several more storms like this one, and bigger, to bring us out of the the extreme drought category.
