The deadly tornado that moved through parts of northern Illinois on Thursday night has been given an EF-4 rating by the National Weather Service (NWS) office in Chicago.

The tornado that ripped through Fairdale, Ashton, Rochelle and other communities in northern Illinois was given the Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale’s second-highest strength rating. At least two people were killed and 22 were injured as a result of the half-mile-wide twister, which traveled nearly 29 miles across Lee, DeKalb, Ogle, Boone and McHenry counties.

At its peak, the NWS survey team, which assessed the damage from the tornado on Friday, estimated that winds topped out at 200 miles-an-hour as the huge twister stayed on the ground for 38 minutes.

Three other tornadoes were confirmed in northern Illinois on Thursday night by the NWS – none larger than EF-1.

Conditions appear to be relatively calm over the next few days for cleanup efforts, with no widespread severe weather anticipated in the region for the next few days. Some light rain could affect the Rockford area on Sunday, otherwise, it should be dry.
