Flash Flood Threat in Coastal Texas

18 Apr 2017, 10:26 am

Slow moving thunderstorms have been producing very heavy rainfall in Eastern Texas around the Houston and Galveston areas. Flash Flood Watches continue through this afternoon. Radar has estimated more than 8″ of rain in some areas.

Rising water has flooded some roads and fields, stalling cars and surrounding livestock. High water has been rushing into a few homes as well.

The heaviest rain has started to move into the Gulf of Mexico, but totals above an inch could still fall through the day today. More showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop later this afternoon and evening.

With a front stalled to the north, a rich feed of moisture will continue into the region flowing in from the Gulf of Mexico. Another round of storms is possible this afternoon, which may produce flooding issues.

Pockets of heavy rain are likely into this evening with slow moving thunderstorms. Storms will gradually diminish overnight, which should help the flooding situation.
