Flood Concerns from the Mid Atlantic to the South

22 May 2017, 2:21 pm

Heavy rain fell this weekend from the Mid Atlantic into the South and much more rain is ahead. 2″ to 3″ of rain produced flooding problems from North Carolina into Mississippi.

The heaviest rain fell in Louisiana and Texas with 4″ to 5″. The storm system has barely moved from this weekend, so flooding is a concern to start the work week.

Flash Flood Watches extend from near Charlotte through Atlanta to New Orleans. Rainfall totals may reach 3″ to 6″ by Wednesday, especially for areas near the Gulf of Mexico.

A slow moving cold front will drop through the Mid Atlantic and Southeast into the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico tonight and Tuesday. Thunderstorms with pockets of heavy rainfall will be developing in the moist and muggy atmosphere.

A second front will produce more showers and thunderstorms Tuesday night into Wednesday. As the lead front stalls in Florida, high humidity will produce flooding rains from the Big Bend to the First Coast.\
