Flooding Concerns in the Central Plains

6 Oct 2017, 4:02 pm

Along with the threat for severe weather today, heavy rainfall is a concern in the Central Plains. Flash Flood Watches continue through Saturday morning across portions of Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, and Kansas. Up to an additional 3″ of rain is possible tonight.

Some areas have already seen heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours, especially in Kansas where more than 3″ fell in some locations. The extra rain on already over-saturated soil could produce runoff problems and flooding.

A strong low pressure center is pulling up high humidity from the Gulf of Mexico. A robust amount of Jet Stream energy coupled with a surface cold front will help to fuel showers and thunderstorms tonight. The potential for heavy rain will continue through Saturday midday, which is when the system starts to track eastward of the area.
