Ever dreamed of navigating a crowded sidewalk — during a rainstorm — and not having the inevitable collision with your umbrella? Well, one small company in China is trying to make it a reality.
A Kickstarter campaign, started by Chaun Wang of Nanjing, China, aimed to raise $10,000. And as of Monday afternoon, they’d shattered their goal, raising more than $87,000.

According information from their Kickstarter page, the strange-looking device is still in the research and development phase, but a prototype exists and is used in the video on the fund-raising website. The creators say the air umbrella can accommodate up to four people in light rain and two people under heavier downpours.

Three variants of the “air umbrella” are being designed; the smallest will have a battery life of about 15 minutes, while the other two — which will be larger — will have a running time of about 30 minutes.

It’s a cool concept, but the concern is this: If this thing is spraying water out in all directions, will it get all over other people on the sidewalk? The last thing we need is a back-alley brawl because of a novel-looking umbrella. Also, to create the airflow needed to keep the rain off your favorite cashmere sweater, is it going to sound like a hovercraft riding up a busy city sidewalk.

The designers of this interesting product will have a while to work out all the kinks, they’re not expecting  to roll the product out until December 2015.

Until then, we’ll just use our tried and true, tangible umbrellas.
