Haboob Rolls Through Lubbock International Airport

30 May 2016, 8:37 pm

On Sunday, the National Weather Service in Lubbock Texas released this incredible footage of a  haboob rapidly approaching the Lubbock International Airport. As the haboob sweeps across the airport tarmac, it rapidly reduces visibilities.

What is a haboob? Haboob comes from the Arabic word meaning “blasting/drafting.” It  is an intense dust storm that usually occurs along a weather front. As thunderstorms begin to dissipate, they collapse in on themselves, which creates an outward force of air.  This force of air, then picks up an loose dirt, which then creates the wall of dust.
