Happy Friday the 13th everyone! It’s the weekend, so many of you might be heading out to the beach or some vacation with family… lets give you a few tidbits for the road.
Heat in the Southwest
We found this stat amazing here in the weather office. On Thursday Death Valley, CA, only got down to 107° for the low. To put that in perspective, that (if confirmed) would tie the all-time worldwide record warmest nighttime low set in Oman (in the Middle East) last year!
Of course, an high overnight low leads to typically a warm temperature the next day. Death Valley, CA reached 120° yesterday! Truckee, CA got down to 43° this morning. Expect more warmth across the region over the next few days!
Rains for some Drought Areas?
The Houston area has been hit hard by rain the past couple days. The climate shows over 2″ of rain in the past 36 hours, while radar estimates show some areas might have had over 14″ over the past week!
As we can see, the rain is at least falling in areas that need it, but many more areas do. 61% of the nation is under drought conditions as of the new data released yesterday.
The good news is that at least some rain is expect to reach some of the larger drought areas over the next few days. It will definitely not be a complete washout, but do expect some showers and storms on and off the next few days. Maybe we’ll be able to put a dent in the drought, especially in areas that get storms and likely will receive heavier rain than what is forecasted.
Severe Possibilities Today
We have two areas where severe weather will be possible today. The first is across the northern plains, from Duluth down to Des Moines. The main threat here will be large hail and damaging winds.
Another threat exists in the Pacific northwest, where a tornado threat gets added in besides hail and wind. I went and looked — the last time I could find a severe weather report near the Seattle area was back in March of 2006 when 1″ hail fell in Redmond. Severe weather in the Seattle area is definitely rare — you get more flooding events than severe weather — but it is not out of the question today.
Here’s what the weather is shaping up to be for today and Saturday!
Friday The 13th
It is Friday the 13th today, so I thought I would include some weather phobia to tie into the date. The names of these are certainly interesting…
Have a great weekend! I’ll be back around this time tomorrow with more weather nuggets for you to impress your friends with!
