Heavy Lake-Effect Snow Chances for Western and Central New York Sunday and Monday

14 Nov 2017, 2:33 pm

There will be increasing lake-effect snow showers for parts of New York by the end of the weekend.  East and southeast of Lake Ontario could see some of the heaviest snow so far this season.  It is still very far out in the forecast, so the timing, placement and strength of the snow can’t be determined at the moment.

Lake Effect Snow Set-Up

A strong cold front will be moving over the Great Lakes and into the Northeast by Saturday.  Very cold air behind the front will then move in for Sunday.

This cold air will be moving over the warm waters of Lake Ontario, where water temperatures are on the low 50s.

Moisture over the warm water temperatures will rise through the cold air, form clouds and produce snow…especially downwind.

Snowfall Potential

This far out it is difficult to determine the snowfall forecast, so this snowfall forecast will likely change in amounts and location.

WeatherNation will continue to watch this scenario very closely and keep you updated on any changes to the forecast.
