Heavy Snow Continues in the West, Plains Next

16 Dec 2016, 9:45 am

Heavy snow, rain, and wind continues across the west and that storm system will be pushing into the Plains tonight. Yard sticks are already being used to measure accumulations in some of the mountains, with totals over 2 feet.

Some areas may see an additional foot of snow, and as the storm moves into the Upper Midwest, 6-12″ is possible this weekend.

Wind gusts in California were above 60 mph, with a few areas peaking near 100 mph. The wind will remain strong today, with gusts of 40 to 60 mph possible. Sustained winds in the Southwest will be above 30 mph in many areas through tonight.

Heavy rain has been a problem as well. Rain gauges in a few areas may approach 9″ before the storm departs. This could produce areas of flooding, with Flash Flood Watches continuing.

The low will move out of the Rockies and into the Great Lakes this weekend, producing significant snow into the Northern Plains. Travel will become difficult in many areas.

We will have live updates from the West through the Great Lakes today into the weekend. I will be joining Tim Jones for reports from the Minneapolis area. Stay tuned to WeatherNation for updated forecasts and snow totals.
