Multi-Vehicle Pileup Closes I-94 Near Battle Creek

State police say that at least one person has died as a result of a series of crashes on I-94 between Battle Creek and Kalamazoo. The resulting pileup has shut down the highway in both directions. Michigan State Police say that multiple semi-trucks and cars are involved, and one of the semis was loaded with fireworks. Police on the scene estimated that roughly 150 vehicles are involved in the pileup.

Lt. Rick Pazder of the Michigan State Police says many vehicles are on fire, including at least two semi-trucks carrying fireworks and other hazardous materials. The crashes are located between mile markers 88 and 92. He says a trucker from Ottawa, Canada, died, and an unknown number of people are injured.

The crashes happened between mile markers 88 and 92 in Eastern Kalamazoo County, near Galesburg. Police say slick road conditions could have contributed to the accidents. People who were not injured in the accidents were taken to warming centers. Investigators now say all hazardous materials from the crash have burned off and they have lifted advisories for nearby residents to stay inside.

Police and fire crews are on the scene and are asking drivers to avoid the area. Emergency crews evacuated people within a three mile radius of the accident scene. People went to the Galesburg-Augusta Primary School while the evacuation order is in place. The evacuation order was later lifted.
