Hurricane Matthew, Haiti and Jamaica on High Alert
Residents of Jamaica and Haiti are on high alert this evening as Hurricane Matthew continues to churn in the Atlantic ocean. At 8pm EDT, Matthew is moving toward the northwest near 5-mph. This evening, Matthew is expected to turn to the north. This will put Jamaica and southwestern Haiti in the path by Monday.
Matthew, a category 4 hurricane, has maximum sustained winds are near 145-mph with higher gusts. Some fluctuations in intensity are possible during the next couple of days, but Matthew is expected to remain a powerful hurricane into Tuesday.
Hurricane conditions are expected to reach Jamaica and Haiti on Monday, and eastern Cuba Monday night. Matthew is expected to produce rainfall accumulations of 15 to 25 inches in southern Haiti and in the southwestern portion of the Dominican Republic. Isolated amounts of 40 inches could be possible in these locations. This rainfall will likely produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides.
