Keep Your Tips Up– More Snow on the Way for Western Ski Resorts

1 Feb 2017, 5:58 am

Well that didn’t last long.

The ridge of high pressure across the western U.S. that brought sunny skies and ample warmth is making its way out, and that means more snow for skiers and riders!
Nobody is complaining about the 2016-2017 ski season, for many this has been a record year. And it’s looking like things are going to ramp back up in the coming days.

Current Snow

The snow is already falling on some of the resorts in the Northern Rockies. And the good news is that we will pick up a few more inches of snow by the time it comes to an end.

Places like Jackson Hole or Grand Targhee will pick up a little more than resorts to the north like Big Sky or Big Mountain with this next round of snow.
With snow coming down the next few days, you might want to save your secret run for the weekend rush.

Look at that Storm

We’ve seen the return of snow to the Northern Rockies, but that will grow more widespread in the coming days.
The ridge of high pressure that brought the warmth and sun is crumbling,  but the big change is what is waiting off the west coast.

The image above shows the water vapor in the mid levels of the atmosphere.
To the trained eye, there are storms and patterns and all sorts of useful information. But to make it easier, we’ll just say the bright colors are the moisture available for the storm and that spinning blob out in the Pacific is the next major storm.

The next storm that will bring fresh powder to all of the resorts that have been in the pattern this season.

Storm Warnings

Because of this massive blob, the National Weather Service has already issued Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories for the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range.
So places like Mammoth that have already seen more than 20 feet of snow in 2017 will pick up another couple feet of snow!

The snow lasts the next few days. So if you are looking for fresh turns this weekend they will be available in abundance– that is until all of the well known stashes are skied out.

Don’t quote me.
By the time we get to the weekend this is what we could be looking at in terms of fresh snow:

  • Mammoth Mountain, CA — 30″
  • Squaw Valley, CA — 36″
With more in the forecast for this weekend
  • Mount Bachelor, OR — 6″
  • Jackson Hole, WY — 24″
    Light snow all weekend
  • Big Sky, MT — 6″

Full disclosure. I am an optimist, so some of these totals might be on the high side…

Don’t Give Up Just Yet

For some of you, this pattern just isn’t bringing the big dumps.
Don’t give up hope just yet.

We have a lot of skiing left this season!

Some of the Colorado resorts will get in on the action this weekend.
Just a few inches, but after a dry week– we’ll take it!

Folks in Utah will see a few inches of fresh snow Friday into Saturday, but nothing worth calling in sick to that pesky day job.

As for New Mexico, sorry, nothing in the near future!
