Lake Effect Snow Continues Across the Great Lakes

8 Dec 2016, 3:10 pm

It is not often you see a waterspout or funnel with snow on the ground. The weather rarity happened today along the Lake Erie shoreline near Westfield, New York. It occurred as bands of heavy lake effect snow are setting up across the Lake Erie.

Lake effect snows are increasing across Lake Michigan and Lake Superior as well. Bands will start to set in along Lake Ontario into this evening.

The lake effect squalls have already produced more than a half a foot of snow in areas of Wisconsin and Michigan. Totals will likely be more than 2 feet in some areas that see the most persistent, heavy snow bands.

Winter Storm Warnings and Lake Effect Snow warnings continue where the snow squalls will be the heaviest. With the wind flow continuing from the west to northwest, the bands are not likely to shift much, bringing in the heavier totals to the favored lake effect belts. The snow will continue through Saturday.
