Lake Effect Snow is Underway in the Great Lakes

4 Jan 2017, 3:09 pm

Lake effect snow is once again flying across the Great Lakes and will continue for the rest of the week. Snow was accumulating in areas of Michigan and New York and much more is expected.

Lake Effect Snow Warnings and Winter Storm Warnings were issued for the snow belts downstream of Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario.

The highest totals will be seen from squalls near Lake Ontario where more than a foot of snow will fall in Upstate New York. Totals may approach a foot in parts of Upper Michigan near Lake Superior. The lake effect snow bands will become well established tonight.

A trough moving through the East will further enhance the snow squalls Thursday. Snowfall rates of over an inch an hour are possible in the heaviest bands.

Cold air will continue to plunge across the Great Lakes into Friday. The bands are not expected to diminish until the weekend when the wind direction starts to shift.
