Lee is the fifth major hurricane of the 2017 Atlantic season.
The storm has maximum sustained winds of 115 miles per hour and a minimum central pressure of 963 mb.
Lee is moving northwest at 7 mph and is expected to continue making a northerly track over the next day before heading northeast by Friday.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) says that after an eyewall replacement overnight, satellite images indicate that a larger clear eye has formed, with the coldest cloud-top temperatures seen to date observed with the cyclone.
