MODERATE SEVERE RISK of Severe Storms in the East Brings Flood and Tornado Threat
Tuesday, September 18th, 2012
Thanks to Barnegat Bay Island, NJ for the picture below, which shows windy conditions from earlier today at Jenk’s Bay at the Inlet.
Significant Severe Threat Today
The Storm Prediction Center has issued a MODERATE RISK of severe weather today for areas shaded in red below. The most significant part about these storms would be damaging winds and isolated tornadoes. Heavy rain and hail would also be a possibility.
Pulsating Red Blobs
Doppler Radar is getting a workout today in the eastern third of the nation. Several showers and storms are racing east with heavy rain, high winds.
Unfortunately for those who will be traveling out east today will likely endure some bumps… A number of the larger airports were reporting delays thanks to the wind and weather.
Severe Weather Threat @6pm EDT
The HRRR model suggests a line of strong to possibly severe storms rolling into the NYC area by 6pm EDT tonight. The severe weather threat in this area appears to be anytime between 4pm to 8pm EDT…
This big blob of moisture will continue to lift northeast through the region. By tomorrow, there could be 1″ to 3″ of accumulated rainfall across parts of the Northeast/New England States. Minor flooding can’t be ruled out.
Much Cooler Behind the Front
Take a look at the low temperatures this morning across northern Minnesota! Talk about SeptemBRRR… YIKES!
Freeze Watch Tonight
The National Weather Service has issued a FREEZE WATCH tonight for parts of the U.P. of Michigan as temperatures are expected to dip into the 20s. I expected to see more frost/freeze headlines at some point later today in these areas.
