How to Prepare for a Winter Storm

16 Nov 2016, 5:17 pm

As the central United States braces for a major winter storm to hit the area, now is the time to prepare. Before a winter storm approaches, add the following supplies to your emergency kit:

  • Rock salt or more environmentally safe products to melt ice on walkways.
  • Sand to improve traction
  • Snow shovels and other snow removal equipment
  • Sufficient heating fuel. You may become isolated in your home and regular fuel sources may be cut off. Store a good supply of dry, seasoned wood for your fireplace or wood-burning stove.
  • Adequate clothing and blankets to keep you warm.

It is also a good idea to make a family communications plan. Your family may not be together when disaster strikes, so it is important to know how you will contact one another, how you will get back together and what you will do in case of an emergency.

During a snowstorm, it is crucial to minimize travel. If travel is necessary, keep a disaster supplies kit in your vehicle. This should include:

  • Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
  • Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Dust mask to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Manual can opener for food
  • Local maps
  • Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger
