Hurricane Alex: NOAA’s GOES-East satellite imagery, released by NASA on Thursday, shows the development of out-of-season Hurricane Alex in the central Atlantic Ocean from January 10 to 14. The rare January hurricane, which has maximum sustained winds of 85 mph (140 kph), formed far out in the Atlantic on Thursday.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center said in a Facebook post that Alex was the first hurricane to form in the month of January since 1938, and the first hurricane to be present in this month since Alice, which formed in late December 1954.
Alex was expected to move over or near parts of Portugal’s mid-Atlantic Azores Islands on Friday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.
