Recent Uptick in U.S. Tornadoes; Still Below Average
Weather conditions over the past few weeks have been a little more active across the nation. There has been a recent uptick in the number of severe weather and tornado reports as of late, but despite that, we are still running below average in the tornado department. May 2014 Tornadoes So Far…
Here’s a map of the May 2014 tornadoes so far. According to NOAA’s SPC, the PRELIMINARY tornado reports for May 2014 through May 12th is up to 68.
2014 U.S. Tornadoes
According to NOAA’s SPC, the U.S. PRELIMINARY tornado count through May 12th is 356. Interestingly, we have now surpassed last year’s tornado count through May 12th of 248. However, in 2011, there were 1,069 PRELIMINARY tornado reports!! The 2005-2013 average through May 12th is 631, so we are nearly half of the short-term average.
Average May Tornadoes
According to NOAA’s NCDC, the average number of tornadoes in May (1991-2010) is 276 across the nation. Texas averages the most tornadoes in May with 43! By the May is typically the most active tornado month of the year with June not far behind averaging 243 tornadoes.

According to NOAA’s NCDC, the average number of tornadoes per year is 1,253 with Texas averaging the most with 155 tornadoes per year.
