The coldest air of the season makes its way south into the High Plains and Upper Midwest this weekend, with daytime highs below zero and wind chills in the negative teens. Players and spectators alike will be contending with this Arctic blast as the Seahawks take on the Vikings in Minneapolis on Sunday. Temperatures will be near zero for tailgating, kick off, and final snap. Wind chills could measure 13 below.

This sounds like it could be one of the coldest football games but it doesn’t even make the top five in NFL history.

The coldest football game ever was played by the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field against the Dallas Cowboys. On December 31, 1967, the temperatures plummeted to 13 degrees below zero at kickoff with unimaginable wind chills in the 40s below zero. Still, 50,000 fans braved the brutal cold to watch the Packers beat the Cowboys, 21-17. The game has been immortalized as the Ice Bowl.
