Severe Storms Erupt Over Central Plains

6 Oct 2016, 5:30 pm

As thunderstorms developed over central and eastern Kansas Thursday afternoon, many of them produced tornadoes. According to the Storm Prediction Center, 14 tornado reports were received for Kansas across six counties. Damage was reported to three homes in Saline County.

This picture of a tornado was taken at 3:10pm CT just east of Winfield, KS.

These storms are firing along a cold front that is moving east through the central United States and there is still a threat for more tornadoes this evening. A Tornado Watch has been issued for portions of Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, and Kansas. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is also in effect for portions of Oklahoma and Texas.

Strong to severe storms are also possible outside of the watch areas. The main threats in the Marginal Risk areas that stretch from Wisconsin to Texas will be damaging winds and large hail. Thunderstorms are still possible Friday across the Great Lakes and the southern plains, but severe weather is not expected.
