Severe thunderstorms are possible later today from the Central Plains into the Tennessee Valley. The Storm Prediction Center has outlined an area from Kansas to Tennessee for the potential for severe weather. Strong winds, large hail and isolated tornadoes are possible later this afternoon and evening.
Several ingredients are coming together for severe thunderstorms later today. Temperatures and humidity will be climbing as southerly winds pull up Gulf of Mexico moisture and warmth. Much colder and drier air along a front will help to provide will provide lift to create severe storms as energy and instability builds.
As the low pressure center pushes from Northern Missouri into Kentucky, it will drag a cold front southward into the unstable atmosphere. Isolated severe storms will develop this afternoon with a squall line possible later tonight along the front.
