Severe Weather Chances, Tropical Update and NFL Regular Season Starts Tonight!
Wednesday, September 5th, 2012
Thanks to Wally Hanson for the picture below out of Chetek, WI. Strong to severe thunderstorms produced large hail up to 2.5″ in spots through southeastern Minnesota and up to 2.0″ hail in spots through western and southern Wisconsin.
The storm reports listed below are some of the largest hail, wind and tornado reports from PM Tuesday into AM Wednesday.
Severe Threat Today
The Storm Prediction Center has issued a SLIGHT RISK of severe weather again today along the leading edge of the same cool push of air out of Canada that produced severe weather yesterday. Today, the severe weather risk will shift a little southeast from yesterday’s location. The areas shaded in yellow will have the best chance at strong to severe storms producing hail, high winds and perhaps an isolated tornado.
NOAA’s HPC 5 day rainfall forecast suggests heavier rainfall potential across the eastern half of the country. Pockets of 1″ to 3″ are possible, with some of this moisture falling in the drought stricken areas across the central part of the country. We get an updated look at the U.S. Drought Monitor tomorrow (Thursday) – we’ll see how recent moisture has helped the drought situation, which is likely to be slightly improved, but not completely gone.
DNC in Charlotte, NC
The Democratic National Convention is being moved today from an outdoor venue (Bank of America Stadium; Home to the Carolina Panthers; Capacity of 74,000) to an indoor venue (Time Warner Cable Arena; Home to the Charlotte Bobcats; Capacity of 20,000) because of rain/thunder threat today. Rainfall so far this week in Charlotte has surpassed 1.50″ with more on the way!

Central America Earthquake
A 7.6 magnitude earthquake (initially estimated at 7.9) off the coast of Costa Rica shook folks earlier Wednesday in Central America. No word of any widespread damage or fatalities, but our very own Susie Martin’s family lives in Costa Rica and they are doing fine! In fact, her father was able to relay ‘good news’ via internet.
“The USGS said the 8:42 a.m. quake struck about 38 miles from the town of Liberia. It was centered about 25 miles below the surface. The magnitude initially was estimated at 7.9. In the town of Hojancha a few miles from the epicenter, city official Kenia Campos said the quake knocked down some houses and landslides blocked several roads. “So far, we don’t have victims,” she said. “People were really scared … We have had moderate quakes but an earthquake (this strong) hadn’t happened in more than 50 years.””
The National Hurricane Center continues public advisories on storms LESLIE and MICHAEL in the Atlantic basin.
These storms are well east of the U.S., but LESLIE is drifting slowly northwest towards the Canadian Mari-times. There will likely be larger waves along the east coast over the coming days and LESLIE continues to slowly drift northwest… Beach goers beware of rip current potential over the coming days!
Soggy US Open in Flushing Meadows, NY
Day Nine of the US Open was a wet one. There was a three hour rain delay in the afternoon that pushed many matches into the night. Then after about an hour of play Tuesday night, the rain picked up again. Andy Roddick had just started a tiebreaker in his first set against Juan Martin del Potro when the rain caused play to be suspended for the night. That match will resume Wednesday afternoon.

NFL Regular Season Starts Tonight!
Football/Fantasy Football fans are gearing up for the start of the NFL regular season tonight in East Rutherford, NJ as the New York Giants (last years Super Bowl Champions) take on the Dallas Cowboys.
“The Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants are set to kick off the NFL season on Wednesday night at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. It’s a rematch of last year’s regular-season finale, which the Giants won to clinch the NFC East title before going on to win the Super Bowl. As always, both teams enter the season with high expectations. But which of these two division rivals is primed to have the better year?”
The game will be held at Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ at 8:30pm EST. Metlife is an outdoor stadium, so there is a potential for weather conditions to come into play!
The forecast tonight in East Rutherford, NJ calls for a few scattered showers, but some clearing should take place through the evening! The image below is a scree capture from my Iphone of the WeatherNation Iphone app!
Have a great rest of your week!
