Severe Weather Risk This Afternoon Along the Gulf Coast

Severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening along the Gulf Coast from the Big Bend of Florida to the Big Easy. A Tornado Watch was issued earlier this afternoon and continues into this evening for Coastal areas of Alabama and the Panhandle of Florida. The watch includes Mobile, Pensacola, Panama City and Dothan.

According to the Storm Prediction Center, there is a risk for a couple of tornadoes, along with the potential for damaging wind gusts into this evening.



Humidity levels will continue to increase this afternoon and evening as the low pressure center lifts northward with a warm front. Storms firing along the front and close to the low pressure center will have ample wind shear to produce tornadoes as wind levels strengthen this evening.

Heavy rainfall have been occurring along the Gulf Coast as well, with parts in Louisiana and Texas seeing over an inch of rain in the last 24 hours. Flash Flood Watches continue for areas around bootheel of Louisiana. More than 2″ of rain may fall with strong storms today and tomorrow.

More storms are likely tomorrow in the rain-parched areas of the Southeast. The severe weather threat will shift into Georgia and North Florida Tuesday.
