Severe Weather Tonight in the Upper Midwest
Severe thunderstorms have been developing in the Upper Midwest this afternoon and the threat for severe weather is likely across most of the Northern Plains. A Tornado Watch has been issued in the Red River Valley area of Northwest Minnesota and Eastern North Dakota. An enhanced risk for severe weather extends through much of Central Minnesota.
The main threat for tornadoes exists in the early evening hours as storms initially develop into supercells in Eastern North Dakota. Large hail is possible as well. Storms later tonight will transition into a line, likely producing very heavy rain and strong wind gusts.
A low pressure center and warm front will provide ample lift for thunderstorms to sustain intensity throughout the night. Instability will remain high with warm temperatures and high humidity. Storms will likely remain strong throughout the overnight.
