Snow Continues in the West, Ice in Oregon

9 Dec 2016, 10:13 am

Areas of heavy snow are moving through the western states and accumulations will continue through this weekend. The mountains have seen the most significant snow, but Portland and Seattle have picked up snowfall as well.

Parts of Oregon have also been dealing with freezing rain. Areas in the Columbia River Gorge could see significant ice accumulation. Traffic will be difficult along I-84, and trees and power lines could come down.

Several areas have seen more than 6″ of snow, and totals above a foot will be common by this weekend.

The Cascades and Wasatch will continue to see the snow pile up through the weekend. Heavy accumulations will continue to spread across the Bitterroots, Sierras, Tetons and Rockies.

This is only the first wave of moisture and energy rolling in from the Pacific Ocean. The system will continue to slide eastward into the Plains tonight and Saturday.

Another piece of energy will push into the West Coast Saturday night into Sunday. This will bring additional accumulations to the west, mainly in the mountains. Temperatures will be warm enough that most lower elevations will see rain.
