Snow and Ice to Start the Holiday Weekend in the Northeast
A round of snow and freezing rain will greet travelers to start the Christmas holiday weekend. Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect from Upstate New York to southern Maine. Winter Weather Advisories continue across nine states from Michigan to Maine. Up to 8″ of snow is possible in the higher elevations and for the lake effect snow belts. Some light amounts of sleet and freezing rain may also occur, making roadways slippery.
A warm front is advancing through the Northeast ahead of a low pressure center in the Ohio Valley. It will continue to bring the first round of snow through tonight, with some freezing rain. Temperatures will warm enough for precipitation to become rain south of the warm front and ahead of the low.
As the low moves offshore and into the Atlantic Ocean, cold air will funnel into New England and snow will continue to fall. The low will move fully out to sea early Sunday and the precipitation will end.
