Snow and Storms to Impact Thanksgiving Travel

Thanksgiving is one of the busiest long-distance travel periods of the year. AAA expects 47 million Americans to travel for Thanksgiving this year, and most will travel by car. The five busiest airports during the Thanksgiving travel season are Chicago’s O’Hare International, Los Angeles International, Boston’s Logan International, NYC’s LaGuardia Airport, and San Francisco International.

A strong cold front will work its way through the states over the next couple of days. Sinking in from Canada, the front will bring wintry weather from the Cascades to much of the Intermountain West through Wednesday. Major airports that could be impacted by the winter weather on Wednesday are Boise Airport, Salt Lake City International, Billings Logan International, and Casper-Natrona County International. Major highways that could be impacted are Interstate 80 from Nevada to Wyoming, Interstate 15 from Utah to Montana, Interstate 84 from Idaho to Utah, Interstate 25 from Wyoming to Montana, and Interstate 94 from Montana to North Dakota.

Showers and thunderstorms will develop late Wednesday and into Thursday from Texas to the Upper Midwest. Gusty winds and low visibility could impact major airports including Dallas/Fort Worth International, Kansas City International, and Chicago’s O’Hare International. A mix of snow, ice, and rain could make for hazardous driving conditions in the Oklahoma Panhandle through western Kansas and northern Iowa. Major highways that could be impacted are Interstate 35 from Texas to Iowa, Interstate 70 from Kansas to Missouri, Interstate 80 from Nebraska to Iowa.

Winter Storm Warning in southern Oregon and Northern California through Wednesday afternoon and evening.

Winter Weather Advisory in Kansas in effect Thursday night through Saturday morning.
