Strong Storm Chances for Parts of the Gulf Coast on Friday
We have been talking about all the winter weather chances the past few days for the Upper-Midwest, but farther south we are talking about strong to severe thunderstorms for the Gulf Coast.
A cold front (the very same cold front that brought the cold air and winds to the Plains) will be pushing east Friday afternoon. This front will interact with the Gulf moisture and generate a line of storms. Surface dew points will likely be well into the 60s and that should be enough moisture to help increase the intensity if any thunderstorms develop.
There is a “Marginal” risk of severe thunderstorms over parts of Southern Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama for Friday afternoon. This means that showers and thunderstorms are in the forecast and an isolated storm or two could turn severe. The instability is not impressive…so this will not be a major severe weather outbreak, but anyone that has outdoor plans in this area should stay weather aware and be prepared to take cover. Large hail and damaging winds will be the main weather threat.
