A tropical wave over the open waters of the Atlantic is starting to get its act together and may threaten the Caribbean later this week. Strong wind shear is preventing the storm from organizing into a tropical depression in the near term.
This tropical wave is forecast to propagate westward toward the Lesser Antilles where environmental conditions will be favorable for further development.
Currently, the National Hurricane Center estimates this tropical wave has an 80% chance of development over the next four to five days.
If further strengthening occurs, the Lesser Antilles, Greater Antilles and South America would be at risk for gusty winds and heavy rain. Those with travel plans to the Caribbean are urged to follow the latest forecast.
(*not* a forecast) There is historical precedent for TCs entering Caribbean at low latitude & becoming major hurricanes during 9/20-10/10: pic.twitter.com/GDcLbu3NzN
