A band of severe weather swept through the metropolitan New York area Tuesday night, August 22, causing high winds and frequent lightning strikes – including one seen arcing directly to the top of the Freedom Tower’s 16-foot lightning rod.

Many local NYC residents took to their rooftops and windows to watch the dazzling lightning display, and some managed to capture the moment the bolt of lightning struck the tower, also known as One World Trade Center.
