Western Inferno Blazes On – 7 Million Acres Scorched
This year, more than seven million acres have been scorched by wildfires. More than five million acres have burned in Alaska, leaving two million acres burned or burning across the lower 48. Currently, 95 wildfires are actively burning 1.1 million acres in at least seven states out West. These wildfires have been destroying homes, killing animals and causing thousands of evacuations. More than 25,000 firefighters are working around the clock to suppress the blazes. With little relief in site, military reinforcements have been called in.
The forecast weather conditions, paired with the extreme drought that has been worsening the last four years, is a nightmare for these firefighters. Mother Nature is not going to cooperate as we will expect to experience little rain for the West and extreme heat continuing in the Southwest. Another concern from these fires is the smoke. Smoke, combined with the forecast conditions, is the cause for thousands to be under an air quality alert.
