White Christmas Forecast (Update)

20 Dec 2017, 6:02 pm

Will you have a white Christmas?  That is the question on everyone’s mind this time of year.  We are starting to get closer to the big holiday, so we are beginning to get a better handle on who will have the highest chance.

Using climate data we are able to give a white Christmas forecast for the Lower 48 states.

White Christmas Probability

Here is a look at the historic probability of there being at least 1 inch of snow on the ground in the Lower 48 states on December 25 based on the latest (1981-2010) U.S. Climate Normals from NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI).

At first glance you can see that most of southern U.S. will not even have a chance at a white Christmas, but farther north there will be much higher chances.

So here is how the Christmas forecast is shaping up across the Lower 48.  The snow chances will be mainly in the High Plains and the Northeast.  Very cold air will be engulfing the Upper Midwest  and Great Lakes on Christmas day.  Single-digit highs are likely in North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin…and even some isolated areas could have highs below zero!
