Today the winter solstice occurs and marks the start of Winter in the Northern Hemisphere. It also means that the shortest day and longest night of the year happens on this date (December 21st). But how long is the day?

For New York City, the length of day will be 9 hours, 15 minutes and 18 seconds, with the sun rising at 7:16 AM and setting at 4:31 PM.

For Newark, NJ, the length of day will be 9 hours, 15 minutes and 9 seconds, with the sun rising at 7:17 AM and setting at 4:32 PM.
