Winter Storm Continues, Daytona 500 Forecast

22 Feb 2013, 12:43 pm

It’s the weekend (almost)! We’ve got a recap of snow totals across the central Plains, heavy rain today across the southeast, and some weekend events.

Shoveling the Heavy Snows

We saw impressive snow totals across the Central Plains yesterday associated with our winter storm. The highest total we could find was 18″ in Nashville, Kansas.

Some locations every saw record snows on Thursday, in some cases blowing the previous record out of the water!

Wichita saw their second largest winter storm on record with 14.2″ of snow between the 20th-21st.

Meanwhile, Kansas City saw one of their largest February snows on record.

Kansas City is clearing out from the snow today, but it will take a while to melt. With temperatures expected to stay around freezing for the next week, don’t expect the snow to melt anytime soon.

Impacts were felt elsewhere from this winter storm. Check out this shot from Minnetonka, MN earlier today of accidents on snowy, icy roads from snow from the overnight hours. Snow continued into the morning hours, and caused some delays at the MSP airport.

They saw some icy conditions out in Cleveland, OH as well, where a plane slid off the runway at the airport. The good news is that no one was hurt.

Future of this Winter Storm

While the storm has weakened a bit, we expect heavy snowfall to form once again in the northeast over the weekend. There are some places that could see over 6″ of snow. This will be the third weekend in a row that the northeast has seen snowfall, and I’m sure they could use a break!

Heavy Rains In the South

The same system that caused snow across the central Plains is creating heavy rains today, and there are some locations that could easily see over 3″ of rain. For this reason, a flood watch has been issued for parts of Florida, Alabama, and a large portion of Georgia.

Weekend Events

It’s the start of NASCAR season this weekend with the Daytona 500 in Daytona Beach, FL. It should be a nice day for the racing activities, including the Nationwide Series race, on Saturday. However, the Daytona 500 on Sunday looks like it could be wet as a cold front approaches the area (the same one responsible for heavy rains today).

The Accenture Match Play Championships continue in Marana, AZ, this weekend after snow fell on the area on Wednesday. Weather looks fairly nice for the rest of the tournament! Of course, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy were knocked out yesterday.

Snow also fell on the site of the Bassmaster Classic earlier this week in Tulsa, OK. Temperatures will moderate through the weekend, and by Sunday it should be comfortable for fishing!

And Sunday is the Oscars in Los Angeles! The good news is that it looks warm, and the stars should not be shivering on the red carpet unlike they were at the Golden Globes in January!

No matter what you are doing this weekend eventwise, we want to see a picture! You can submit your photos on our website. Have a great end of the week — and a fantastic weekend!
