Karissa is the Director of On-Air Operations at WeatherNation. Karissa grew up loving math and science, but really fell in love with Meteorology while attending the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. After two summers of storm chasing in the central plains, she knew that it was the career path for her. Standing in front of a thunderstorm and feeling the cool outflow knock her over was an experience she will never forget. After two years at COD, she transferred to Metropolitan State University of Denver. Karissa graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology. Her high school and college speech and meteorology professors were extremely supportive and pushed her to succeed. Before joining the WeatherNation team, she previously worked as the Morning Meteorologist at KCAU-TV in Sioux City, Iowa and at WMBD-TV in Peoria, IL. She recently was part of a National Edward R. Murrow award winning team for breaking news for their coverage of the EF-4 tornado in Washington, Illinois. In her free time, Karissa enjoys cooking and trying new foods. She is a self proclaimed 'TV Junkie' who can get into just about any show. She is a die hard Chicago sports fan who loves attending professional sporting events.

We're only half way through 2026 and Illinois has already broken its record for the most tornadoes in a single year. According to the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://stateclimatologist.isws.illinois.edu/climate-of-illinois/tornadoes-in-illinois/">Illinois State Climatologist</a>, the Land of Lincoln averages 54 tornadoes each year (1991-2020 data). As of June 21, the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.spc.noaa.gov/climo/summary/">Storm Prediction Center</a> has the count at 196.<div class="fb-post" data-href="https://www.facebook.com/reel/4404339883174541" data-width="500" src="https://www.facebook.com/reel/4404339883174541" style="display: flex; justify-content: center"></div>We spoke with Trent Ford, the Illinois State Climatologist, about why the state has seen an increase in tornadoes. NASA Names Artemis III Astronauts

NOAA has released <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.noaa.gov/news-release/noaa-predicts-below-normal-2026-atlantic-hurricane-season">their predictions for the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season</a>. They are calling for a below normal season with 8-14 named storms, 3-6 hurricanes, and 1-3 major hurricanes. For probability, they predict a 35% chance of a near-normal season, a 10% chance of an above-normal season, and a 55% chance of a below-normal season. As a reminder, even below average seasons can have major impacts. All it takes is one storm making landfall for it to be a devastating season in the U.S.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/05/Screenshot 2026-05-21 100455-1779379504114.png">NOAA sites several factors in their forecast, including the burgeoning El Ni­­ño, and possible Super Ni­­ño, shaping up in the tropical Pacific. The expectation for an El Ni­­ño event during the peak of the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane season is a big factor in keeping numbers lower than previous years, along with near normal sea surface temperatures, which have been much above average in recent seasons.The confidence in an El Niño developing this summer is quite high, but the remaining question is how strong will the event be? A weak El Ni­­ño typically has a lower impact on the tropics in the Atlantic, while a strong El Ni­­ño has a more consistent impact. Each updated forecast from the Climate Prediction Center shows higher confidence in this year's El Ni­­ño being on the strong side.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/05/Screenshot 2026-05-21 083641-1779374209515.png">Why does El Ni­­ño typically reduce hurricane activity in the Atlantic Basin? The warmer water in the equatorial pacific often leads to a more energetic sub-tropical jet, leading to stronger winds in the upper-atmosphere over the Caribbean. Surface winds in the Caribbean most often comes from the east, known as the trade winds. When these winds lay under strong winds from the opposite (or even the same direction), it leads to strong wind shear which tears hurricanes apart.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/04/Screenshot 2026-04-09 063418-1775740706915.png">“Although El Niño’s impact in the Atlantic Basin can often suppress hurricane development, there is still uncertainty in how each season will unfold,” said NOAA’s National Weather Service Director Ken Graham. “That is why it’s essential to review your hurricane preparedness plan now. It only takes one storm to make for a very bad season.”If this year's name list looks familiar, it's the same one from the historically active 2020 season. There is one difference: the name "Laura" was retired after Hurricane Laura devastated the Louisiana coast. NOAA Predicts Below Normal 2026 Hurricane Season

Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. MAY 2026: Meteorological spring officially ends on May 31st before giving way to meteorological summer (June-July-August). As we wrap up the season, we're taking a look back at May, typically the most active tornado month of the year in th United States, to see how this year compared to average.First, it's important to understand the baseline. April, May, and June, account for more than half (54%) of the average annual tornado totals in the U.S. May alone averages 268 tornadoes nationwide.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/05/Screenshot 2026-05-31 142144-1780258994499.png"><h3>2026 vs. Average</h3>According to the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.spc.noaa.gov/climo/summary/">SPC</a> this year we've had 166 tornadoes reported this May, which is about 100 less than an average year.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/Screenshot 2026-06-01 171050-1780355486229.png">That doesn't mean the month has been without impact. Several notable tornadoes occurred across the country:<ul><li>May 6 - Mississippi: An EF3 tornado tracked from Sibley to Monticello, injuring 23 people and destroying numerous homes, mobile homes, and vehicles. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="2052569172065042760" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/2052569172065042760"></div></li><li>May 17 - Nebraska: An EF3 tornado struck near St. Libory, damaging or destroying homes and a rural housing development.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="2056185501854650512" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/2056185501854650512"></div></li><li>May 19 - Texas: An EF3 tornado impacted Mineral Wells, damaging homes and businesses throughout the community.</li></ul>While May 2026 was less active than average by the numbers, a few statistics stand out: Oklahoma recorded just 2 tornado reports this month, compared to its May average of 32. Morning temperatures are likely to be brisk, with overnight lows dipping to around 40°F, before gradual warming during the late morning and afternoon hours. Don't let those temperatures in the upper 50s fool you - with a north wind it should feel pretty cool for most of the day.Perhaps most importantly, the chance of rain appears low, representing a significant improvement from earlier in the week, when unsettled weather threatened to dampen the weekend’s flagship event. While isolated sprinkles cannot be completely ruled out, the forecast is expected to be mostly dry.<h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/05/Screenshot 2026-05-02 041851-1777717143387.png"></h1><h1>Impact on Track Conditions</h1>Earlier rainfall during the week may have some lingering effects on the Churchill Downs surface. Rain can quickly turn the usually fast dirt track into a sloppy or muddy surface, altering the performance of certain horses and jockeys. Some horses, known as “mudders,” thrive in wet conditions, while others struggle. Celebrating Earth and Arbor Day 2026

Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

The cold front that generated the severe storms in the Midwest and Southern Plains on Friday will keep moving east into the Ohio Valley on Saturday. The front will interact with more unstable and showers and storms could quickly turn severe. Not many severe warnings as the threat has been lowered to a Marginal. Welcome home, astronauts! Friday, April 10th, the Orion spacecraft splashed down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego, where the U.S. Navy assisted in the recovery of the crew. While the North Slope remained near average, much of the state experienced much-below-average temperatures, with parts of the southeast interior, southern coast and panhandle recording record-cold conditions. Minimum temperatures were especially notable, ranking as the third-coldest March on record and the coldest since 1972.<h3>Precipitation&nbsp;</h3>The average precipitation total for the CONUS in March was 1.83 inches, 0.68 inch below the 20th-century average, ranking as the eighth-driest March in the 132-year record. Combined with January and February deficits, this period marks the driest first three months of any year on record for the CONUS.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/04/grid-ranks-prcp-202603-1775758208567.png">March precipitation was much below average across much of the West, Southwest, portions of the Plains, Deep South and Southeast. In contrast, above-average precipitation totals fell across parts of the Northwest and northern Rockies, as well as across the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes region.In total, nine states across the Lower-48 ranked among their 10-driest Marches. California received less than a quarter-inch of precipitation statewide—less than 10% of its 20th-century March average and the lowest March total in the 132-year record. Colorado and New Mexico each tied their second-driest March on record, while North and South Carolina each experienced one of their five-driest Marches. In contrast, Michigan received nearly twice its average March precipitation—its third-highest March total on record.Simultaneously hot and dry conditions affected 12 states, where much-above-average temperatures occurred alongside much-below-average precipitation, with potential impacts on snowpack and water resources in the coming months. California exemplified these extremes, recording both its warmest and driest March on record.Precipitation across Hawai‘i was much above average for the month, with many areas—including large portions of the Big Island, Maui, Moloka‘i and O‘ahu—experiencing their wettest March on record (since 1991). This exceptional wetness was driven by back-to-back Kona low systems mid-month that triggered widespread major flooding and landslides across the island chain.Alaska’s statewide precipitation was much lower than average, especially over portions of the Southwest, the Alaska Peninsula and Aleutians. However, the cold air over mainland Alaska brought above-average snowfall to much of Southeast Alaska, with several locations recording their highest March totals in more than a decade.<h3>Drought</h3>According to the March 31 <a target="_blank" rel="noopener" class="ext" href="https://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/DmData/DataTables.aspx">U.S. Drought Monitor report</a>, about 59.9% of the CONUS was in drought, an increase of about 5.0% from the beginning of the month. Drought conditions persisted or intensified across much of the interior West, the Plains, Mississippi Valley, South and Southeast, with notable degradation across the Rockies and central Plains. In contrast, drought contracted or eased across portions of the Midwest, Great Lakes and Northeast.

March 2026: Warmest March on Record for U.S.

The National Hurricane Center is always improving and looking for better ways to communicate threats when it comes to Hurricane Season. This year, they're rolling out a handful of new products, with a new cone, website and symbology to talk about. <h2>NEW CONE</h2>They've been toying around with an experimental cone for the past 2 years. This year the National Hurricane Center making it operational. It makes it easier to show inland impacts, especially wind, of a landfalling tropical system. Watch and warnings that pertain to a certain tropical system will now be shown along the cone's path.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/03/NHC Cone-1774369916399.png"><h2>TRACK FORECAST ERROR</h2>Speaking of the cone, which again, is used to show where the center of any particular tropical system will be in the future, is getting trimmed. These cones are built in with a typical error within the forecast. This year, it's shrinking by 4-8% vs last year. In the Pacific Basin, it will be 3-8% smaller vs 2025. <h2>STORM SURGE ALERTS FOR HAWAII</h2>This one's pretty straightforward. The National Weather Service will have the ability to issue Storm Surge Watches and Warnings for the Hawaiian Islands like they do in the lower 48. This will also come with a peak storm surge graphic and a potential inundation map. <ul><li>Generally, a Storm Surge Watch will come out when the threat is within 48 hours of occurring</li><li>Generally, a Storm Surge Warning will come out when the threat is within 36 hours.</li></ul><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/03/Example Peak Storm Surge-1774369995289.png"><h2>A NEW WEBSITE</h2><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="http://Hurricanes.gov">Hurricanes.gov</a> will get a makeover of sorts. They're beginnging to work on a mobile version that will be more accessible with a bit of a different look. <h2>UPDATED SYMBOLOGY</h2>This one has some scary words, but is pretty simple too: anything that is not expected to develop in both the 2 &amp; 7 day timeframe will come with a grey/white X. We finally made it! Out of Winter and into Spring, which means allergies, and America's Pastime! However, this might not feel like Opening Day for everyone: some will see toasty temperatures that remind us of the Dog Days of Summer already, but others might have to contend with some rain delays.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/03/Screenshot 2026-03-24 043448-1774348607592.png"><h1>RAINY GAMES</h1>A front will drop into the strike zone on Thursday, which will make contact with some warm and humid air. Avalanche Danger in the Backcountry

Melissa is a name that will never be used again to label tropical cyclones in the Atlantic. The WMO (World Meteorological Organization) announced on Wednesday it will retire the name after devastating impacts from Hurricane Melissa in the Caribbean last fall. Melissa is the 100th name to be retired in the Atlantic Basin. The WMO shared the following release with its announcement. "The World Meteorological Organization’s Hurricane Committee retired Melissa from its rotating list of names because of the death and destruction it caused in the Caribbean in October 2025. The committee selected Molly as the replacement name.At its peak, Melissa was classified as a category 5 storm based on the Saffir Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, with life-threatening winds reaching around 300 km/h. The storm produced devastating storm surge and damaging winds across Jamaica and Cuba and brought extreme rainfall and flooding to the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, and Cuba.Melissa was responsible for more than 90 deaths across Jamaica, Haiti and the other island nations. Melissa is the strongest hurricane on record to make landfall in Jamaica. The storm ties Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas in 2019 and the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane in the USA as the strongest hurricane (in terms of maximum sustained wind speed) to make landfall in the Atlantic basin.“The risks associated with tropical cyclones are both real and increasing. It only takes one landfalling tropical cyclone to roll back years of development. And this was unfortunately the case with Hurricane Melissa,” said WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo.“Recovery will be long and hard. Despite the force of Melissa, loss of life was in the dozens rather than the thousands. This is testimony to the accuracy of advance forecasts and the use of these early warnings to support early action. Hurricane Committee Members can be proud of themselves for saving so many lives and helping to protect key sectors of the economy like transport, energy and fisheries,” she said in an opening video message.The Hurricane Committee consists of experts from National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) and represents North America, Central America and the Caribbean (WMO Regional Association IV). It met in Mexico City from 2 to 5 March to review the past season and prepare for the forthcoming one.“After more than four months since the passage of Melissa over Jamaica, stories about the impacts and recovery continue to dominate the news and media. Melissa has now been engraved in the collective memory of the nation,” said Evan Thompson, Principal Director at Meteorological Service, Jamaica, and President of WMO’s Regional Association IV.In 2025, the Atlantic basin produced 13 named storms (winds of 63 km/h or greater), of which five became hurricanes (winds of 120 km/h or greater), including four major hurricanes with winds reaching 180 km/h or greater. An&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="ext" href="https://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/outlooks/Background.html">average season</a>&nbsp;has 14 named storms, seven hurricanes, and three major hurricanes.The&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="ext" href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/">WMO’s Regional Specialized Meteorological Center Miami is operated by the US National Hurricane Center</a>&nbsp;and is responsible for issuing regular forecasts to guide individual NMHSs to inform decisions on storm preparation, such as closing airports and ordering mass evacuations – as was the case with Melissa.“Every forecast and warning is a lifeline for real people, and a constant reminder that our work is not just about science, but about saving lives. Life-threatening flash flooding has developed overnight in Missouri to the SSW of St. Louis. Ports of Iron and Reynolds counties have seen upwards of 6-12 inches of rain, leading to water surging into homes and businesses. This has resulted in numerous water rescues by emergency personnel. Stalled Boundary Increases Flood Threat into the Weekend

A ridge of high pressure is dominating the West. An Extreme Heat Warning covers the area and extends into far southern California, where Heat Advisories are also in place. There are no more heat alerts for Phoenix, as temperatures are cooling down to average.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/pic5-1783735834482.png">Forecast highs will be running upwards of 10 degrees above average, but no records are in jeopardy. The hottest temperatures in the region will likely be Saturday, and then temperatures will slowly cool a few degrees into next week.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/pic4-1783735965732.png">Long-term models suggest this might be something to get used to, however. This ridge looks to linger in the area and could strengthen by next weekend. The Climate Prediction Center is highlighting much of the West with above-average temperatures into the middle of July.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/Screenshot 2026-07-07 161953-1783462799142.png">Some of these forecast highs for cities like Billings, Montana could could close to beating their all-time record highs. If we get above 108 on Sunday, this would be an all time record. Warm Weather Returns Out West

Hazy skies will be hovering over portions of the Gulf and the Southeastern United States through this weekend, possibly extending into next week! Why so hazy? Saharan dust will be sent flying over the region at times, thick enough to make a difference in the color of the sun and potentially to air quality. Expect some of the thickest dust to hover over Florida this weekend (forecast below).<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/FORECAST-1783725185432.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>This is not unusual for this time of year. Outbreaks of the Saharan Air Layer (SAL) typically occur in the Atlantic during the summer months as strong westerly waves move off of Africa, sending dust out over the Atlantic. Depending on the speed and intensity of the SAL outbreak, these plumes of dry, dusty air can reach parts of the U.S. at times, even the middle of the country!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/Screenshot 2026-07-08 083614-1783521420831.png"><h1>Heat</h1>Hot and humid conditions will persist in the Southeast while the Saharan Air moves through. While the SAL does dry-out the mid-levels of the atmosphere, the bottom 5,000 feet is typically unaffected, meaning humidity won't change much even though there may be fewer storms. Record heat occurred in Florida and North Carolina with highs in the 90s and 100s.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/1-1783735298752.png"> These are dangerous heat index values, especially over 110°. Consider avoiding strenuous activity during the middle of the day, take many breaks in the shade or air conditioning, and drink plenty of water!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/PIC 3-1783725292082.jpg">Highs could challenge several records in Central Florida in the days ahead. Several rounds of severe weather have been rolling off the Front Range into the Great Plains this week! A mid-level trough sparked severe weather Friday afternoon, bringing damaging winds and hail. Colorado State University researchers have lowered their outlook for the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season as atmospheric conditions become increasingly favorable for the development of El Niño, a climate pattern that typically suppresses tropical cyclone activity in the Atlantic Basin.&nbsp;The updated forecast now projects&nbsp;nine named storms,&nbsp;four hurricanes, and&nbsp;one major hurricane&nbsp;of Category 3 strength or higher. While those numbers are below the long-term seasonal average, the outlook reflects activity across the entire Atlantic Basin. It does not indicate where storms may eventually track or make landfall.&nbsp;The expected increase in El Niño is one of the primary reasons behind the reduced forecast. During El Niño events, stronger-than-normal upper-level winds spread across the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean, increasing vertical wind shear. This hostile environment can disrupt the structure of developing tropical systems by separating thunderstorms from their low-level circulation, making it more difficult for storms to strengthen into hurricanes.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/Screenshot 2026-07-08 095127-1783525916256.png">Despite the anticipated increase in wind shear, ocean temperatures across parts of the Atlantic remain warmer than average. Warm water serves as the fuel source for tropical cyclones, meaning any storm that develops in a favorable pocket of lower wind shear could still intensify. How these competing factors evolve during the peak of hurricane season will play a major role in determining the basin’s overall activity.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/Screenshot 2026-07-08 095236-1783525964091.png">The climatological peak of the Atlantic hurricane season occurs from mid-August through October, when sea surface temperatures are at their warmest and atmospheric conditions are generally most supportive of tropical development. Although seasonal forecasts help estimate how active a season may be, they cannot predict where individual storms will form or who may be impacted.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/Screenshot 2026-07-08 095047-1783525931294.png">Residents along the Gulf Coast and Atlantic coastline need to prepare now rather than focus solely on the seasonal numbers. Colorado State University Scales Back 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season Forecast

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. NEW JERSEY - Heavy rainfall rates of around 2 inches per hour produced an intense burst of rain in a short period of time. These downpours caused a partial roof collapse Monday morning at a BJ's Wholesale Club in Ocean Township, New Jersey. SOUTHEAST - It's been muggy and stormy in the southeast and as we wrap up the holiday-long weekend, that trend will continue. Forecast highs and heat index values through Monday will likely reach the triple digits all across the southeast. Cities like Charleston, SC, will be feeling like 110 through Monday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/Screenshot 2026-07-05 144142-1783284197832.png">This heat and humidity will also help to drive diurnal thunderstorms (storms that are driven by daytime heating). Muggy and Stormy in the South

An expansive ridge of high pressure will continue to dominate the weather pattern across much of the eastern United States through the Fourth of July weekend, producing another round of dangerous heat and humidity for millions of people. The stagnant weather pattern has allowed temperatures to climb well above average for several days, with little overnight relief in many locations.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/Screenshot 2026-07-04 094536-1783179947834.png">The heat is being driven by a strong upper-level ridge, often referred to as a heat dome. As air slowly sinks beneath the ridge, it compresses and warms, leading to widespread sunshine and hotter temperatures at the surface. With the ridge remaining firmly in place, daytime highs will climb into the 90s and lower 100s across portions of the Midwest, Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/Screenshot 2026-07-04 094647-1783180021101.png">Humidity will make conditions even more dangerous. Dew points well into the 70s will push heat index values into the triple digits across many communities, making it feel significantly hotter than the actual air temperature. Warm overnight lows, with some locations struggling to fall below the upper 70s, will provide little opportunity for the body to recover from the daytime heat, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/Screenshot 2026-07-04 093025-1783180256172.png">Several locations could challenge or break daily temperature records as the prolonged stretch of excessive heat continues. The front will usher in slightly cooler and less humid air behind it, offering relief to some communities early next week. However, areas farther south are expected to remain under the influence of summer heat as the ridge weakens but does not disappear entirely.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/07/Screenshot 2026-07-04 100037-1783180846117.png">With millions expected to spend time outdoors for Independence Day celebrations, meteorologists urge residents to take the heat seriously. Persistent Heat Dome to Keep Much of the Eastern U.S. Sweltering Through the Holiday Weekend

Early in the season, we watch closer to the coasts here at home for development in the Hurricane Season. Until the waves coming off the coast of Africa start to fly and quit losing the battle to Saharan Dust, old fronts are the leading source of development.Currently, a frontal boundary moving through the southeastern U.S. has prompted a marginal risk for severe weather across portions of the Southeast. Main threat will be damaging winds. Earlier this week, the National Hurricane Center was monitoring an area of potential tropical interest. That area is no longer expected to form into a tropical system. For now, the only name we have crossed off for the Atlantic season is Arthur.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/Screenshot 2026-06-27 063531-1782563982336.jpg">In the Eastern Pacific, on the other hand, Tropical Storm Douglas formed on Wednesday. As Summer settles in across the Central U.S., MCSs, also known as Mesoscale Convective Systems, become more prevalent. These large clusters of thunderstorms can organize and persist for hours, travel hundreds of miles, and produce all modes of severe weather. The weather pattern over the next few days will favor repeated rounds of these storm complexes across the Plains &amp; Midwest.Strong and severe thunderstorms remain possible in the Mid South over the next few days as storms ride a ridge of high pressure. 'MCS' Season Brings Severe and Flooding Threats Across the Southeast

Another day, another Illinois tornado. That's just how this spring has gone in the Midwest. A low pressure system brought numerous severe storms to the Midwest on Wednesday, including large hail and flooding in Wisconsin, with strong winds, a tornado, and flooding in Illinois.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="2070122338226749842" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/2070122338226749842"></div><h1>Forecast</h1>The low pressure system that spawned Wednesday's storms is now moving east into New England bringing severe weather chances for Friday. A new low forms along the same front to also produce a severe risk across the Ohio River Friday. This is primarily for the threat of damaging winds but an isolated tornado or two will be possible (top of page).<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/1-1782440323140.png">The stalled boundary will the focal point for storms on Friday. The first low moving across the Northeast will produce severe storms across parts of New England. Secondly, as the new coming out of Missouri will produce severe weather for Southern Indiana, Southern Illinois, and Kentucky during the afternoon and evening hours. All modes will be possible. With additional rain across saturated soils, the WPC has issued Excessive Rainfall Outlooks.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/Screenshot 2026-03-29 061107-1782396238753.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/Screenshot 2026-03-29 061131-1782396247909.png">While severe weather will be a concern, heavy rainfall may become the more widespread threat. Abundant atmospheric moisture will allow storms to produce intense downpours, and some areas could see rainfall rates of more than an inch per hour. Repeated rounds of thunderstorms moving over the same locations may quickly overwhelm drainage systems and lead to flash flooding.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/Screenshot 2026-06-24 201258-1782353603628.png">We will continue to monitor the progression of the system as it moves across the region. Residents in areas prone to flooding or severe weather are encouraged to stay informed of the latest forecasts and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts throughout the weekend.&nbsp;

Flood Threat Persists This Week

FRONT RANGE - Large hail and strong winds pushed through portions of Colorado, Wyoming, and into the Plains on Wednesday. The severe storm threat continues for these areas through the overnight hours. Hail during the day topped out at 2.5" near Fort Morgan, Colorado.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/Screenshot 2026-06-24 192204-1782350630005.png"><h2>Severe Outlooks</h2>The SPC has maintained an ENHANCED risk (level 3 out of 5) for severe weather across portions of Colorado, Nebraska, and Wyoming through Thursday morning. Destructive winds and very large hail remain possible with severe storms that form off the Rockies. Be sure to protect your property before the storms arrive.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/Screenshot 2026-06-24 190738-1782350716157.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/Screenshot 2026-06-24 190748-1782350720619.png">For Thursday, we'll see a similar setup persisting. A SLIGHT (level 2 out of 5) risk has been issued for relatively the same areas. This outlook, however, extents into the Southern Plains as well.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/Screenshot 2026-06-24 192536-1782350745041.png">On Friday, a level 1 out of 5, MARGINAL, risk is in place for the same spots as thunderstorms fire off the same region and into the High Plains.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/Screenshot 2026-06-24 192539-1782350769617.png"><h1>FORECAST</h1>Strong to severe storms will continue through the night across the front range with all modes of severe weather possible from Colorado, Eastern Wyoming, and Western Nebraska. Meteorologist Jesse Kelley is excited to join the talented staff at Weather Nation. Jesse spent most of his childhood in Birmingham, Alabama. The state of Alabama is prone to seeing various types of weather from severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, and winter weather. For college, Jesse attended the University of South Alabama where he received his degree in Broadcast Meteorology along with minors in Math and Geography. From Alabama, Jesse started his broadcast television working three years at KAVU-TV in Victoria. Recently, he finished a stint in Shreveport, LA. This week, an upper-level ridge has taken over the West. Some heat alerts still remain for the Pacific Northwest. Regardless, it's still going to be a hot one on Wednesday. There will be an area of low-pressure that will bring cooler temperatures by the end of the week for the Northwest.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/Screenshot 2026-06-24 042130-1782296500354.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/1-1782325479215.png"><h1>Southwest</h1>In Southern California, heat advisories have been issued for parts of the LA Metro through Thursday. The worst of heat will be in areas northeast of Downtown Los Angeles. Wednesday, high temperatures are expected to reach the 90s from Calabasas to San Bernardino.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2026/06/1-1782325640051.png">In the Desert Southwest, Extreme Heat Warnings and Heat Advisories have been issued into Thursday as well.
