<p>They aren't out to suck your blood, and they're definitely not rodents, but bats still get a bad wrap and are associated with the spookiest season of all. To learn more about bats, their impacts on the world around us, and how they survive the winter, we spoke with <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://naturalist.nwf.org/">David Mizejewski</a>, a naturalist with the National Wildlife Federation.</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Zu3Gp7SVawg" start="0"></iframe></div><p></p><p>Bats aren't just great at pest control, but they're pollination and seed dispersion machines. There are two that will be visible with the assistance of binoculars or a telescope tonight, and for the next few nights.</p><h2>LEMMON</h2><p>Comet Lemmon will be the easiest to spot tonight. Simply a pair of binoculars should be all you need. Find the Big Dipper and loow a little west from there and you should be able to spot it!</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-21 110414-1761066269539.png"></p><h2>SWAN</h2><p>This is the dimmest of the two and might require the help of a telescope. Luckily, many of us have a pretty clear night in store, with the lone exception around the Great Lakes. FORECAST: Comets Should Be Visible for Many Tonight

<p>Over the weekend of October 11th, and 12th, thousands of Alaskan residents along the western coast were slammed by the remnants of Typhoon Halong. The one super typhoon dipped below typhoon level strength, but still packed a powerful punch as it battered the coastline.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1978936489565212816" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1978936489565212816"></div><p>Nearly 100 mile per hour winds were recorded and storm surge swept homes off their foundations, leading to one of the most significant airlifts in Alaskan history as coastal villages were evacuated.</p><p>The communities of Kipnuk and Kwigillingok saw water levels more than 6 feet above their highest tide cycles.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1978173969028272296" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1978173969028272296"></div><p>Multiple shelters across the state have been opened for those whose lives have been impacted by the storm, but many of the communities are not accessible by roads and can only be reached via boat or airplane, making it a challenge for relief work to be done in the area. Local officials said even with emergency repairs many homes will not be livable by winter.</p><p>More than 1000 residents have been evacuated to various locations. Evacuees have been taken to Anchorage, but the trip is over 500 miles away, and while some shelters closer to home like Bethel, AK are open, they have already reached capacity.</p><p>We spoke with multiple organizations assisting with the relief efforts to learn more on what the disaster relief looks like, and the challenges they face to help these communities recover.</p><h1><u>WORLD CENTRAL KITCHEN:</u></h1><p>This is the second time WCK has responded to typhoon flooding in Alaska. In 2022, the remnants of Typhoon Merbok pounded Alaska's western coast, affecting 21,000 people during the peak of hunting and gathering season. Together with local groups, WCK delivered fresh food and water to families in need.&nbsp;</p><p>Our teams are flying across the flood-devastated regions of western Alaska to provide dry goods and warm meals to communities in need. October is Leave the Leaves Month

<p style="margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;"><span style="font-size: 13.5pt; color: #454545;">Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

<p>La Niña was observed in September, leading to NOAA issuing a La Niña advisory. These conditions are expected to persist through winter into spring, with impacts likely for the upcoming winter season and beyond into next spring. La Niña often plays a role in determining storm tracks during the winter season and severe weather into the spring.</p><h1>What is La Niña?</h1><p>La Niña is one phase of a large circulation over the equatorial Pacific Ocean. The prevalent wind direction will churn up cooler or warmer water, based on the direction of the circulation. When winds are prevailing from the east, it churns up cooler waters near the coast of South America and to the west, while areas in the western Pacific see warmer than average water temperatures during this phase. These cooler waters, along with other large scale circulations, impact how air flows across the United States.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-10 110029-1760115646348.png">During strong La Niñas, the jet stream is typically more active from the Northwest through the Great Lakes. This effect is typically less pronounced during weaker events. This often favors better chances for precipitation across the northern tier of the country, including the Northwest and Great Lakes.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-10 095632-1760111817342.png"></p><h1>Impact for Winter 25'-26'</h1><p>NOAA releases their outlook for the upcoming winter season this Thursday (October 16th) but the Climate Prediction Center continuously updates outlooks for three month periods. These outlooks likely won't change much with next week's update but we'll bring you that forecast when it's released. The temperature and precipitation outlooks for December - February show conditions typical for a La Niña year, with below average temperatures favored in the Pacific Northwest.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-10 095641-1760111827269.png"></p><p>The precipitation outlook also favors conditions fairly typical for a La Niña winter, with above average precipitation favored around the Northern Rockies and Great Lakes/Ohio Valley.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-10 095637-1760111827269.png"></p><h1>Spring Severe Weather / Tornado Impacts</h1><p>La Niña is expected to decay through the spring months, which can have a big impact on the severe weather season. <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.gfdl.noaa.gov/research_highlight/u-s-regional-tornado-outbreaks-and-their-links-to-spring-enso-phases-and-north-atlantic-sst-variability/">Studies have shown</a> a increase in the potential for tornado outbreaks over certain areas of the country as La Niña decays into a neutral or El Niño phase. These favored areas include the Central/Southern Plains and around the lower Great Lakes into the Mid-Mississippi Valley.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-10 105635-1760115430383.png"></p><p>This phase also <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.aoml.noaa.gov/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/ENSO_Tornado_Lee.pdf">favors stronger tornadoes</a>, as the number of high end tornadoes and outbreaks increase during this phase.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-10 100658-1760112433708.png"></p><p>Seasonal forecasts are difficult to predict with accuracy, so be sure to check the weather forecasts often with WeatherNation for the latest.</p>

La Niña Advisory Issued, Potential Impacts to Winter Precip & Springtime Tornadoes

<p>Flash flooding will continue to be possible in the southwestern United States over the next couple of days. Be sure to <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://msc.fema.gov/portal/home">check your property's flood zone</a> and have a plan to seek higher ground if necessary. NEVER drive through flood waters if you cannot easily see the water's depth or the road below it. Multiple water rescues have been needed over the past few days. Remember, you're not only risking your life but the lives of the first responders if you drive into flooded roads.</p><p></p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1978098719095406800" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1978098719095406800"></div><p><br><br>The remnant moisture from the two most recent tropical systems in the Eastern Pacific, Priscilla and Raymond, led to heavy showers and thunderstorms over a wide range of terrain throughout the weekend. And now a trough out west and a ridge out east are helping to funnel moisture into New Mexico and Colorado.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web1-1760520329985.png"></p><p>In addition to the flood threat, severe storms are possible through Wednesday as the trough moving through the northern Rockies increases wind shear farther south. Damaging wind gusts have been a problem already this week, with places like Tempe clocking 71 mph winds from a microburst.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web7-1760520445087.png"></p><p>We have seen heavy rain and flooding with these storms, and that threat will continue over the next few days.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/2025-10-15 03-27-44-1760520491582.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>This surge of moisture across the southwest brings forth the chance for excessive rainfall in places like Alamosa, CO all the way down to Santa Fe, NM.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web3-1760520692663.png"><br>As a result, multiple flood warnings have been issued for several spots near Durango, CO. Some of these areas are near rivers and streams, which in some cases like near Rio Grande, have already seen roughly 8" of rain since the past weekend. This causes these areas to be more prone to flooding once more rain is in the forecast.<br><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web1-1760521119921.png"><br>We'll be detailing this more live on WeatherNation. <p>Most people who aren't mariners or active beach goers often don't check up on their local high and low tide cycles. But what happens when your favorite dockside restaurant has ankle deep water in the parking lot? That's what we call the King Tide, a phenomenon that occurs once or twice a year along the U.S. coastlines.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web2-1759748881043.png"></p><p>Caused by what's called a "perigee", that highlights a very close distance between the Earth and the moon. It occurs on a monthly basis. Being that the moon drives the tidal cycles on Earth, it's close proximity elevates the high and low tides, making coastal flooding that much more possible. A "supermoon" is a byproduct of the perigee, occurring three to four times a year. However, the two tend to not overlap for most of Earth's orbit around the sun.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web6-1759749414059.png"></p><p>We're also slowly trending towards "perihelion", the point in Earth's orbit where it's the closest to the Sun, this in turn will also enhance our tidal cycles. The combination of these three factors is what will bring us the "King Tide".</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web7-1759750231408.png"></p><p>The combination of these three factors are what influences the "King Tide". The King Tide: How the Tides can Impact Your Coastlines

Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. <p><strong>NORTH CAROLINA </strong>- These abandoned houses were no match for the powerful swells generated by Humberto and Imelda, which brought high surf, flooding, and heavy rain to the Outer Banks. It is believed that up to 8 homes have succumbed to the Atlantic Ocean in the last few days. </p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1973423019470233900" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1973423019470233900"></div><p>Up until last Tuesday, 12 homes had been swept away into the Atlantic in the Outer Banks since 2020. Why are so many homes being swept away, you may ask? In many cases, what protected a house decades ago is no longer sufficient because the shore has receded, sea levels are higher, and strong storms have been more frequent or powerful.</p><h2>Coastal Impacts</h2><p>Humberto and Imelda dissipated in the Atlantic, but dangerous swells will still be likely in their wake. More Homes Succumb to the Atlantic Ocean

<p>Monsoon season has come and gone; September 30th marked the end of the 2025 season. The American Monsoon season runs from June 15 until September 30, so let's see how the season shaped up.</p><p>The Drought Monitor mid-June had most of the southwestern U.S. under drought conditions, with New Mexico under the worst of the conditions, under exceptional, level 5 drought.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-30 203810-1759286479364.png">By September 23, the final drought monitor of the season, most of the southwest worsened drought conditions, but the Mojave Desert saw improving conditions, as well as New Mexico, where we needed it.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-30 203815-1759286732227.png"></p><p>With the rainfall last weekend, Phoenix surpassed the average for the monsoon season, but most of this rain happened in a day. Otherwise, it was more of a non-soon season.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-30 203836-1759286678352.png">Some spots, like Las Vegas, saw a below-average monsoon season. In fact, this year we tied for the 18th driest monsoon season.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-30 204800-1759286908942.png">How about looking at the season from a lightning perspective? Even that was struggling to keep up to average, with less than half of the strikes of lightning vs normal in the state of Arizona. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-01 091351-1759331690297.png"></p>

Karissa grew up loving math and science, but really fell in love with Meteorology while attending the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. After two summers of storm chasing in the central plains, she knew that it was the career path for her. Before joining the WeatherNation team, she previously worked as the Morning Meteorologist at KCAU-TV in Sioux City, Iowa and at WMBD-TV in Peoria, IL. She recently was part of a National Edward R. Murrow award winning team for breaking news for their coverage of the EF-4 tornado in Washington, Illinois. In her free time, Karissa enjoys cooking and trying new foods. Helene's eyewall passed about 10 miles west-southwest of Perry, Florida at 11:10 p.m. ET on Florida's Gulf Coast. In the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season, Helene was one of five landfalling storms along the Gulf coast, including three in Florida.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-24 135342-1758743646080.png"></p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/5uqc6I6wcXM" start="0"></iframe></div><p>The remnants of Helene brought catastrophic flooding, which prompted a record 34 Flash Flood Emergencies across portions of Appalachia and Mid-South. Including the first ever for the city of Atlanta, GA after 11" of rain. The highest total from the storm topped out above 30" in North Carolina. A precursor event saturated the soils ahead of Helene. The USGS documented that the heavy rain on top of the impacted soils prompted more than 2000 landslides. 63 stream and river gauges exceeded their record flood levels during Helene. 2,700+ water rescues were documented, about half from storm surge and half from fresh water flooding.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/Screenshot 2024-09-27 160234-1727474573331.jpg"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/Screenshot 2025-09-24 140622-1758744396604.png">According to <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="http://poweroutage.us">poweroutage.us</a>, a total of 7.4 million customers lost power at some point during Helene. <p>There's a new state record in North Dakota after this weekend's severe weather tore through the nation's 39th state.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1967665592955179443" src="https://x.com/NWSBismarck/status/1967665592955179443"></div><p>The National Weather Service offices in Bismarck and Grand Fork say North Dakota has broken the record for most tornadoes in a year, surpassing the previous total of 61 set in 1999.</p><p>Severe storms swept through Central North Dakota on Sunday, and Bismarck confirmed 15 tornadoes from this outbreak.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1968057424612606356" src="https://x.com/NWSBismarck/status/1968057424612606356"></div><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/09/0915 ND Most Tornadoes on Record-1757978378157.png"></p><p>North Dakota typically sees about 29 tornadoes each year, but before September 14th, the state had already seen 58 for 2025.</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/2dgiWTWdp-0" start="0"></iframe></div><p>Preliminary ratings from Sunday's event include an EF-1 just west of Mercer, ND, and EF-2 level damage in the Denhoff, ND area. Additional EF-2 damage was found approximately 13 miles west of Linton, ND. The office says more details will be released as the surveys are completed.</p><p>Jeff Schild, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Bismarck said Sunday's event was a bit of an unusual set up, and resembled more of an event you would see in the southeastern U.S. instead of the plains. The high shear environment contributed to several tornadoes touching down, but also mentioned the lack of hail the storms produced.</p>

<p>September marks the start of National Preparedness Month.</p><p>In a new study done by Talker, 90% of Americans acknowledge they are at risk of a natural disaster, but only 46% of people said they were prepared for a disaster of any kind.</p><p>The study goes on to conclude that younger generations (Gen Z, Millennials) are more prepared for a disaster than older generations. We posed the question to our social media audience to see how prepared they are.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1965460391326351670" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1965460391326351670"></div><p>This month, we're teaming up with the American Red Cross to learn more how to better prepare ourselves in the event of a disaster.</p><h1><strong><u>WILDFIRES:</u></strong></h1><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Cc4PIrSn8Q4" start="0"></iframe></div><p></p><p>The Red Cross encourages those in wildfire prone areas to have a go-kit with at least three days of supplies that you can easily carry, a stay-at-home kit that contains two weeks of supplies, as well your important documents in a safe location.</p><p>The organization also provides <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.redcross.org/content/dam/redcross/get-help/pdfs/wildfire/EN_Wildfire-Safety-Checklist.pdf"><strong><u>a checklist</u></strong></a> of things to do before, during, and after a wildfire.</p><p>Taylar Sausen, a national spokesperson for the Red Cross said it's also important to know how you can stay connect when wildfires strike. Despite being past the peak, there is still plenty of hurricane season left and all it takes is a single storm to make a drastic impact to your community. That's why the Red Cross is encouraging those in hurricane prone areas to make a disaster plan now, ahead of the storm, and start finding supplies you may need now to avoid the rush and long lines when a storm approaches.</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/K7sqHPreCwY" start="0"></iframe></div><p></p><p>"The best time to prepare for a disaster is well before it happens," said Mandy McMahon, a spokesperson for the National Red Cross.</p><p>McMahon emphasized the importance of making plans for staying home and evacuating when it comes to tropical systems for both coastal communities, but also inland areas that typically see impacts from tropical systems.</p><p>"Food, water, and medicine are the most important items, but also think about how you'll charge your devices." McMahon added as she encourages those with medical conditions to remember how live saving medical devices may need to be charged or may need replacement batteries.</p><p>McMahon also adds that you should be finding apps now that can help notify you of emergencies, but also of evacuation orders, places to find shelters, and other helpful resources during disasters. Create a go-kit with things you need in your daily life: food, water, first aid, etc. But consider other items you may need too. Extra clothing, blankets, shovels, and heating pads are all good options to include in your go-kits. We spoke with Remy Kennedy, a national spokesperson with the American Red Cross to learn more on how to prepare for winter weather.</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/uqknztCRXmU" start="0"></iframe></div><p>Dr. Jim Siebert shared some of his past experience dealing with winter weather in locations that don't typically see snow. National Preparedness Month in Full Swing

<p>From Wilson's Warbler to Canadian Geese, millions of birds (we are excluding "Snowbirds" from this count) are kicking off their seasonal migration to warmer climates further south. To learn more about this tremendous trek, we spoke with ornithologist and aero-ecologist, Kyle Horton, Ph.D. from Purdue University.</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/altubffHZ-U" start="0"></iframe></div><p>"We're well into fall migration across most of North America right now, and night after night there's going to be hundreds of millions of birds flying. Across the season, we'll be looking at billions of birds making their southward journey to their non-breeding or wintering grounds," said Horton who helps runs the migratory bird forecasting website: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://birdcast.info/"><strong>https://birdcast.info/</strong></a>.</p><p>The team utilizes weather radars, the same that we use to detect thunderstorms to also track their feathery friends. That means sometimes radars are actually showing birds rather than actual showers. You'll sometimes hear meteorologist refer to this as "clutter" on the radar imagery.</p><p>"The rain we're accustomed to seeing on radar is really intense, it's quite dense and it shows up on a it shows up as a more stronger signal," Horton added. Precipitation typically shows up as reds and oranges on most radar scales, where birds return typically show up as blues and greens. Horton said you can look at the texture of the radar image to identify whether the radar is showing rain or animals like birds or insects. Storms typically have a more elongated shapes and are irregular. Birds return a smoother more consistent shape.</p><p>Horton said typically birds try and time their travels with the arrival of frontal systems to make their journey a little easier. Oh My-Gration: Billions of Birds Set to Migrate this Season

<h3><strong>Melissa made landfall on Tuesday, October 28th, around 1:00 PM ET near New Hope, Jamaica, as a Category 5 hurricane, the 3rd strongest Hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic Basin, with a central pressure dropping to 892 mb. Maximum sustained winds were estimated at 185 mph.</strong></h3><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1984077869409325158" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1984077869409325158"></div><h3><strong>Hurricane Melissa made its second landfall in eastern Cuba early Wednesday near the city of Chivirico as a Category 3 storm before moving past Bermuda Thursday night.</strong></h3><ul><li><p>Catastrophic and life-threatening flash flooding caused major damage in Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba.</p></li><li><p>Wind damage is widespread and catastrophic across western Jamaica.</p></li><li><p>Melissa is now a post-tropical cyclone, bringing gusty winds and heavy rain to eastern Canada.</p></li></ul><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1983196616640299223" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1983196616640299223"></div><p>Melissa is now a post-tropical low, meaning it now longer gets its energy from tropical processes. It has past Bermuda and continues to weaken, but it still has category 1 strength winds. This will mean gusty conditions and rain for the Maritime Provinces of Canada. Melissa will continue to quickly accelerate off to the northeast as it weakens over cooler sea surface temperatures. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-31 084734-1761922076072.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-31 085015-1761922223671.png"></p><p>Hurricane and Tropical Storm Warnings have been discontinued for now. <p>I will never forget the time it snowed in southwest Missouri on Halloween. Going from house to house for as long as we could stand it before piling back in the car because we were so cold. While you might see some rain icons in the forecast in the northeast, there's a strong possibility we kick the rain out by the afternoon/evening, when it matters, except for portions of northern New York and Vermont. We're concerned with some areas in the Northwest, like Seattle, where the rain might be both consistent and heavy at times. <p>An upper-level low has been moving across the country, bringing rainy, windy, and cooler weather to many areas. Heavy rain caused flooding issues in the Northeast on Friday where over 3 inches of rain fell in New York and New Jersey.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/FORECAST-1761873655316.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Heavy rain will gradually lift north and west of the the I-95 corridor through the morning on Friday, leaving parts of northern New York and New England with rain and snow during the spooky trick-or-treat hours tonight. <p><strong>WEST </strong>- A series of atmospheric rivers has been responsible for wet, windy, and snowy weather in the northwestern U.S. The next round of rain and snow is taking shape as our next river pushes in. Strong Winds, Temperature Changes, and Severe Storms

<p><strong>LOS ANGELES </strong>- On Tuesday, temperatures in LA rose to record territory with a temperature of 97 degrees, which beats out the old record for October 28th of 94 in 1931. What's causing this heat? The Santa Ana winds have returned. In addition to LA, Oxnard, and Idyllwild also broke record highs on Tuesday afternoon.</p><h2><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-28 201221-1761703950133.png">Santa Ana Winds</h2><p>Whenever we have high-pressure systems out in the West Coast, the possibility of a Santa Ana wind setup becomes likely. The NWS in Los Angeles warns critical fire danger is likely on Wednesday because of low humidity, gusty winds, and high heat.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1983224741319065651" src="https://x.com/NWSLosAngeles/status/1983224741319065651"></div><p></p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/2025-10-28 04-47-51-1761648488737.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p><br>During this phenomenon, winds head westward due to the high pressure's clockwise motion. These winds will pass over the dry, desert region of the southwest and head west through the mountain passages in Southern California. In some spots, we can expect temperatures that are close to 15 degrees above average. <p>Slow-moving train thunderstorms produced extreme rainfall across portions of Central Florida on Sunday, triggering a flash-flood emergency in Lake County. Flash Flood Emergency Triggered Sunday in Florida

<p><strong>GAUTIER, MS</strong> - Earlier Sunday morning, tornado warnings swept through the Gulf Coast, and this person was caught in the debris of the tornado in Mississippi. The severe threat continues through tonight across the Gulf Coast as this frontal boundary keeps moving through.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1982498399602786785" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1982498399602786785"></div><p></p><p>According to the National Weather Service in New Orleans, a survey team will be heading out on Monday morning to survey the damage that Sunday morning's storms brought. The NWS has also encouraged anyone in the region to send over their reports to help with their surveys as well.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1982508518684209425" src="https://x.com/NWSNewOrleans/status/1982508518684209425"></div><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-26 163627-1761518716166.png">Most of the storms from Sunday sat along a warm front and remained as supercells. Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. <p><strong>GREAT LAKES </strong>- A large trough has been moving over the northern U.S. since early this week, bringing along with it gusty winds, scattered showers, and cooler temperatures.</p><p>As the upper-level trough and surface front move over the Great Lakes, they'll continue to usher in cooler air above warmer sea surface temperatures. The contrast between the two can enhance lake-effect showers. It's not quite cold enough for lake-effect snow with this system. Great Lakes Storms, High Plains Winds, and Cooler Air

<p>Ready for another La Niña winter? NOAA quietly released it's outlook for the upcoming winter season on Thursday, sans press conference since the government shutdown continues. The press conference has been rescheduled to November but the outlook is still ready for us to digest.<br><br>As a reminder, these outlooks are for the overall three month pattern and do not serve to predict seasonal snowfall totals or bursts of cold/warmth that are likely to impact areas highlighted with the seemingly opposite outlook.<br><br>The National Weather Service released the following video showcasing the newly released outlooks for temperature, precipitation, and drought from December through February.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1978839667907744157" src="https://x.com/NWS/status/1978839667907744157"></div><h1>Temperature</h1><p>Above average temperatures are favored across the southern tier of the United States, while below average temperatures are favored across the Upper-Midwest and Northwest. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-17 065848-1760706897085.png"></p><h1>Precipitation</h1><p> As the jetstream is likely to remain more active across the northern tier of the country, allowing for cooler air, it should also allow for more storms to track through these areas. As such, above average precipitation is favored from the Northwest through the Great Lakes, while drier than average conditions are expected from Southern California through Florida and the Carolinas. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-17 065852-1760706026499.png"></p><h1>Influences</h1><p>In case you missed it, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/la-nina-advisory-issued-how-this-could-affect-the-winter-season"><u>a La Niña Advisory was issued last week</u></a> as these conditions were observed in the equatorial Pacific west of South America. La Niña is expected to persist through winter, which is one of the primary reasons the winter outlook favors the areas it does. La Niña patterns vary greatly from year to year, depending on the strength of La Niña and the phase of the PDO (Pacific Decadal Oscillation). </p><p>The graphic below shows the typical pattern of the Pacific and Polar jets during a La Niña winter, which usher in cooler and wet air masses. <br><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-17 065856-1760707324994.png"></p><p>There is lower confidence that La Niña continues through the late winter and early spring (graphic below), which could throw a wrench in the seasonal forecast. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-17 073303-1760707994646.png"></p><p>ENSO (El Niño &amp; southern Osciallation) neutral conditions have a less obvious pattern influence, but wetter conditions can develop farther south than during<strong> </strong>La Niña. What's the takeaway? Be prepared for anything this winter! NOAA Releases Outlook for Winter 25-26'

<p>October has been relatively quiet in terms of severe weather. That all came to an end Saturday as storms rumbled through the Central and Southern Plains. A few storms actually produced severe weather reports, some of which were classified as tornadoes.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-19 155805-1760911139185.png">The National Weather Service in Little Rock, Arkansas, confirmed an EF-1 tornado was found in Hot Spring County from Saturday's storms.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-19 155304-1760911134206.png"></p><h1>Forecast Timing</h1><p>Now, the front is aiming for the northeastern U.S. One thing we've noticed is the lack of lightning with these thunderstorms, but the winds have been howling along the front. Through Monday morning, the severe weather threat continues into New England, for cities such as Boston, MA.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/10-19_rne bams3k overnight-1760926909056.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h1>Severe Outlook</h1><p>As for severe weather, not much is expected behind this front. The SPC only calling for general thunderstorms in the forecast for some of the coastal northeast cities.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web4-1760955877378.png"><br>With regards to rainfall, the northeast is not totally out of the woods yet. We still have a marginal (level 1 out of 4) risk for excessive rain.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web7-1760956041292.png"><br>The Storm Prediction Center's tornado outlook is low, but non-zero, for cities including Baltimore, New York, and Philadelphia. It may not be until early Monday morning before the front actually moves through.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-19 201910-1760926771887.png">In fact, on Sunday night, a tornado warning happened just south of the D.C. area.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-19 201521-1760926794802.png"></p><h1>Total Accumulation</h1><p>The severe storms will also be capable of producing heavy rainfall that could lead to flooding. Strong Fall Front Fires Up Severe Chances Through Monday Morning

<p>A ridge of high pressure has been responsible for the quiet and warm days across the central U.S., but on the western periphery of this ridge, a trough will attempt to slide in and ignite severe weather chances across the High Plains. The storms that are steered between these two upper-level systems are what we often refer to as "ridge-riding" thunderstorms.</p><p></p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/2025-10-16 05-09-22-1760612987566.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>On Thursday, another MARGINAL (level 1 out of 5) risk is issued as the cold front shifts down into eastern Colorado and western Kansas, even extending all the way into central Nebraska. All kinds of severe weather are possible.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/1-1760669659768.png"></p><p>There is a small risk of tornadoes in the latest SPC advisory for Thursday. It covers cities from North Platte, NE, over to Colby, KS and as far south as Cheyenne Wells, CO. Make sure you have a way of getting notified if anything is to touch down.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/1-1760640961225.png"></p><p>The cold front keeps pushing east into Missouri and Oklahoma for Friday. Similar to Thursday, severe potential will exist during the heating of the day but some storms could remain strong even after sunset! <p>As of Wednesday, all evacuation orders have been lifted for Los Angeles after torrential rain fell over burned areas. <span style="color: rgb(10, 10, 10)">The warnings were issued for areas with burn scars from earlier fires, like the Palisades, Hurst, and Sunset fire zones, due to the threat of mud and debris flows.</span> Heavy rainfall, snow, and gusty winds continue to calm down for the southern half of the Golden State as a strong trough continues to move to the northeast.</p><p>Rainfall reached up to 9 inches in California's Haines Canyon, in southern California. The threat of heavy rainfall and snow moves to the northern half of the state this morning.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/2025-10-15 03-23-08-1760520223806.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p></p><p>Rainfall totals appear impressive for an October storm system in California, considering it is early in the season for such heavy precipitation.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-14 200559-1760493964815.png"></p><h1>Rain &amp; Flooding</h1><p>Flash flooding and debris flows will be possible through early Wednesday despite the rain having already happened. The heaviest of the rain has occurred, with storm totals likely having been upwards of 3 inches, which keeps the burn-scarred areas of southern California from recent wildfires at risk.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-14 144824-1760474941902.png"></p><h1>Snowfall</h1><p>Once this event is complete by Wednesday afternoon, snowfall totals may have topped a foot or even two feet in the high Sierra, while areas around the Donner Pass can expect 6-12 inches at the summit. Sierra to the Rockies: Flooding Rain & Heavy Snow

<p>A low-pressure system that has tracked up the East Coast continues to bring threats of coastal flooding, heavy rainfall, and strong winds. While this system has not developed, and is not expected to develop, any tropical characteristics, it’s behaving much like an early-season Nor’easter, delivering similar impacts minus the cold and snow. Areas along the shores of North Carolina to New England were impacted by this system.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1977894622975430882" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1977894622975430882"></div><p>The system is expected to move away from the coast through Tuesday but New Jersey still had a handful of strong wind reports on Monday. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web 14-1760436387824.png"></p><h2><strong>Rainfall</strong></h2><p>Heavy rain was very localized from this system, and will be far and few especially as it moves away from the East Coast. But a few daily rainfall records were still broken on Monday. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web 13-1760436496566.png"></p><p>A few scattered rain showers still remain possible.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/10-13 east-1760408242196.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p></p><p>Coastal flood alerts have been slowly ending for much of the Atlantic Coast. Sea water flooding during high tides could still approach 2-3 feet of inundation in some areas (warning areas in dark green).</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Web 12-1760436278168.png"></p><p>The major flood stage is expected to be reached around the southern Chesapeake, mostly during high tides. October Nor'easter Wrapping Up For the Atlantic

<p>The National Weather Service in Grand Forks, ND, has ruled that a tornado near Enderlin, ND, caused EF-5 level damage upon further investigation. This marks the end of 12 years without a surveyed EF-5 tornado in the U.S. The last time EF-5 damage was reported from a tornado was in May of 2013 in Moore, OK.</p><p>The tornado is estimated to have wind speeds greater than 210 miles per hour. This tornado was on the ground for 12.1 miles with a width of just over a mile! Sadly, this storm caused three fatalities.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-06 104454-1759769110628.png"></p><p>Here is more on what led the NWS to upgrade its survey findings:</p><blockquote><p><em>"The National Weather Service in Grand Forks conducted additional surveys and worked extensively with wind damage experts to further investigate the 20 June 2025 Enderlin, ND tornado #1. The estimated maximum wind speed of the Enderlin, ND tornado #1 is greater than 210 mph and occurred during the time of the train derailment south of Enderlin, ND. The analysis involved forensic damage wind speed estimates for tipping several fully-loaded grain hopper cars and lofting of tanker cars, including one empty tanker car that was tossed about 475.7 ft (145 m)."</em></p></blockquote><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot 2025-10-06 102949-1759768203710.png">We spoke with the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, ND, to learn more about the decision to upgrade the tornado rating and the factors that influenced the decision.</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/xSnzPzENapk" start="0"></iframe></div><h1>SET-UP</h1><p>On June 20, 2025, a derecho brought wind gusts of 70 -105 mph to the north central U.S., spanning over 400 miles and leaving hundreds of thousands of households without power. Multiple long-track, destructive tornadoes were within this storm system.</p><p style="text-align: start">A derecho is a long-lived severe wind event, with specific criteria about the length and width of the damaging wind swath. The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.spc.noaa.gov/misc/AbtDerechos/derechofacts.htm"><strong><u>SPC has a detailed page</u></strong></a> dedicated to these destructive windstorms. Several typically occur each year, though they can vary in intensity and area. A notable <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/one-year-ago-the-midwest-derecho"><strong><u>derecho ripped through Des Moines in 2020</u></strong></a>, producing hurricane-force winds and widespread damage.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/2025-06-21%2005-35-48-1750505871964.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h2 style="text-align: start">OTHER REPORTS</h2><p style="text-align: start">Wind gusts in North Dakota and Minnesota (as well as northern South Dakota) were impressive, many over hurricane strength. A wake-low also developed behind the leading edge, producing severe strength winds (58+ mph) in some locations for over an hour!</p><p style="text-align: start"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot%202025-06-21%20053620-1750505847379.png">Bemidji, Minnesota, was hit particularly hard in the overnight hours as an intense bout of winds moved through the area, with a tornado potentially embedded in the circulation. The Bemidji Regional Airport reported a gust to 106 mph, with widespread damage reported in the area.</p><p style="text-align: start"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot%202025-06-21%20053627-1750505847378.png">The widely spanning severe winds have left hundreds of thousands of households in the dark the following morning, with some counties reporting well over 60-60% of customers without power. As a reminder, if you're going to run a generator to power anything, keep it at least 25 feet away from any opening in your home, like windows and doors.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/1-1750541351436.png"></p><p style="text-align: start">This was one of many severe weather events that pushed<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/north-dakota-breaks-yearly-tornado-record"> North Dakota to break their yearly tornado record</a>.</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/2dgiWTWdp-0" start="0"></iframe></div><h1></h1>
