<p style="margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;"><span style="font-size: 13.5pt; color: #454545;">Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. <p>Hundreds of thousands of households are dealing with power outages Saturday morning, many are also dealing with significant tree damage, after a derecho ripped through North Dakota and Minnesota Friday night into Saturday morning. The derecho brought wind gusts of 70 -105 mph to the region spanning over 400 miles, producing an impressive shelf cloud along it's leading edge (video below).</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1936265319775191439" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1936265319775191439"></div><h2>What is a derecho?</h2><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-21 053614-1750505847380.png">A derecho is a long-lived severe wind event, with specific criteria about the length and width of the damaging wind swath. The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.spc.noaa.gov/misc/AbtDerechos/derechofacts.htm"><strong><u>SPC has a detailed page</u></strong></a> dedicated to these destructive wind storms. Several typically occur each year, through they can vary in intensity and area. A notable <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/one-year-ago-the-midwest-derecho"><strong><u>derecho ripped through Des Moines in 2020</u></strong></a>, producing hurricane force winds and widespread damage.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/2025-06-21 05-35-48-1750505871964.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>All criteria appear to have been met Friday night and Saturday morning to classify this event as a derecho. Regardless, widespread wind damage has been reported with many trees and powerlines down. Several tornadoes did occur in addition to the straight-line winds.</p><h2>Reports</h2><p>Wind gusts in North Dakota and Minnesota (as well as northern South Dakota) were impressive, many over hurricane strength. A wake-low also developed behind the leading edge, producing severe strength winds (58+ mph) in some locations for over an hour!</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-21 053620-1750505847379.png">Bemidji, Minnesota was hit particularly hard in the overnight hours as a intense bout of winds moved through the area, with a tornado potentially embedded in the circulation. The Bemidji Regional Airport reported a gust to 106 mph, with widespread damage reported in the area.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-21 053627-1750505847378.png">The widely spanning severe winds have left hundreds of thousands of households in the dark as of Saturday morning, with some counties reporting well over 60-60% of customers without power. As a reminder, if you're going to run a generator to power anything keep it at least 25 feet away from any opening in your home, like windows and doors.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/1-1750541351436.png"></p>

<p><strong>JUNE 11, 2025</strong></p><p>The folks at Colorado State planned on updating the outlook today and they did - no changes. They're still expecting a ENSO neutral regime to persist through the Hurricane Season. That, with above average sea surface temperatures (but not as hot as last year) should still point to a busy season. Their next update to the outlook is scheduled for July 9, with another adjustment August 6. </p><p></p><p><strong>APRIL 3, 2025</strong></p><p><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0)">Today, meteorologists and research scientists at </span><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://tropical.colostate.edu/forecasting.html"><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0)">Colorado State University (CSU)</span></a><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0)"> have released their outlook for the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season. Dr. Phil Klotzbach and the Tropical Meteorology Project at CSU are among the first to issue an outlook for the season. Early predictions expect this year's hurricane season to be busier than average. This year they anticipate 17 named storms, 9 of which will become hurricanes and 4 of those are expected to become major hurricanes (CAT 3 or greater).</span></p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/NpwxsMmHDIU" start="0"></iframe></div><p>Forecast factors that contributed to their above average outlook focus on the El Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and sea surface temperatures. In the coming months, a transition to ENSO neutral is expected. That usually does not give a strong single for an above or below average season. However, by the end of the summer into early fall (climatological peak of hurricane season), a potential transition to La Nina is forecast. There is not much certainty on the likelihood or intensity of that La Nina transition, though. Nonetheless, an absence of El Nino which traditionally suppresses hurricane activity is enough to warrant an above average forecast.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/Screenshot 2025-04-03 081623-1743689797271.png"></p><p>Sea surface temperatures in the tropical Atlantic remain above average this year. CSU Updates Their Tropical Outlook

<p>Okay. Explanation needed. Dr. Jim is the only father at WeatherNation (of humans). That's why I jar you, the reader, with his headshot. Capeesh? Alright, let's get into that forecast for Dad! Here's what we're looking at for Father's Day.</p><h1>SWEATY DADS</h1><p>Most of the country will be hot and muggy in the 80s and 90s, and the southwest will take the cake for warmest. There is one exception, that is the northeast, which is stuck in the cooler 60s.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Web 6-1749981079865.png"></p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Day1SVR-1749925772739.png">As a ridge of high pressure builds in the desert southwest, temperatures have started soaring. By Saturday and Sunday, areas like Phoenix will top out beyond 110°, prompting heat alerts. While this likely won't threaten any record highs for the area, it is still the hottest temperatures we've seen this year. Make sure Dad's drinking water early and often!</p><h1>TOUGH TIME LIGHTING THE GRILL</h1><p>We're monitoring a few areas of low pressure that could rain on your Father's Day parade. The High Plains to Upper Midwest could see some strong to severe thunderstorms as back-to-back surface lows slide through. Lots of Gulf moisture will be moving through the heart of the country, fueling shower and thunderstorm chances from the Front Range of the Rockies to the Mississippi valley. <p><strong>MCS</strong> - A common summertime storm phenomenon, but what is it?&nbsp;MCS stands for <strong><em>Mesoscale Convective System, </em></strong>a term used to describe an organized cluster of thunderstorms that lasts for several hours and can span multiple states.</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/f2EIy0J8vy0" start="0"></iframe></div><p></p><p>During the summer, MCSs often form overnight as individual afternoon thunderstorms merge into larger storm complexes. These systems are commonly linear in structure, forming squall lines that stretch for miles. The primary threats associated with MCSs include <strong>damaging winds</strong> and <strong>torrential rainfall</strong>, though <strong>hail</strong> and even <strong>tornadoes</strong> can also occur.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-04 141540-1749068154691.png"></p><p>There are different types of MCSs:</p><ul><li><p><strong>MCC (Mesoscale Convective Complex):</strong> A large, circular, and long-lived cluster of storms.</p></li><li><p><strong>Mesoscale Convective Vortex:</strong> A rarer form that can resemble a small hurricane.</p></li><li><p><strong>Derecho:</strong> An especially destructive wind-driven MCS capable of causing widespread damage across hundreds of miles.</p></li></ul><p>Understanding the risks associated with these systems is key. Always have multiple ways to receive weather alerts—especially at night, when many MCS events tend to occur.</p>

Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. <p><strong>JUNE 1 - </strong>Today marks the beginning of <strong>meteorological summer. </strong>Meteorologists measure seasons using three-month periods for easier record keeping, which means Meteorological Summer lasts from June 1 until August 31.<br><br><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/Screenshot 2024-09-02 203921-1725331171022.jpg">Astronomical summer, or the summer solstice, will happen on Friday, June 20th at 10:42 PM E.T. this year.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-31 181808-1748737115612.png">So, welcome to summer! The weather outlook from the Climate Prediction Center shows much of the Lower 48 having higher chances of remaining warmer-than-average for June, July, and August.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-31 175159-1748736967107.png">This does not mean it won't get chilly or cool. Short-term cold weather patterns will still be possible. But when the three months is summed up, it will likely be warmer-than-average.</p><p>The outlook for June, July, and August calls for drier-than-average weather for parts of the Rockies, northwest, and the Plains. Karissa is the Director of On-Air Operations at WeatherNation. Karissa grew up loving math and science, but really fell in love with Meteorology while attending the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. After two summers of storm chasing in the central plains, she knew that it was the career path for her. Standing in front of a thunderstorm and feeling the cool outflow knock her over was an experience she will never forget. After two years at COD, she transferred to Metropolitan State University of Denver. Karissa graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology. Her high school and college speech and meteorology professors were extremely supportive and pushed her to succeed. Before joining the WeatherNation team, she previously worked as the Morning Meteorologist at KCAU-TV in Sioux City, Iowa and at WMBD-TV in Peoria, IL. She recently was part of a National Edward R. Murrow award winning team for breaking news for their coverage of the EF-4 tornado in Washington, Illinois. In her free time, Karissa enjoys cooking and trying new foods. Whether you live on the coastline or inland, it is important to <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.ready.gov/hurricanes">know your risks</a> when it comes to tropical systems.&nbsp; Coastal communities are most at risk of destructive winds, dangerous storm surge, and are more likely to have to evacuate. Communities even hundreds of miles away from coastlines are still at risk, with the threat of high winds, flooding rainfall, severe weather &amp; tornadoes, and the longer-lasting threat of flooding and power outages that could occur days or weeks after a storm hits.</p><p>Between Hurricanes Beryl, Helene and Milton, here's a look back at what happened last year:</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/2RO-HrmdaZg" start="0"></iframe></div><h1>KNOW YOUR RISKS</h1><p>After a destructive and dangerous 2024 hurricane season, we are looking ahead to 2025. Hurricane season begins on May 15 for the Eastern Pacific Basin, and on June 1 for the Atlantic basin.</p><p><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/noaa-predicts-above-average-2025-hurricane-season"><strong>WHAT'S THE FORECAST THIS SEASON?</strong></a> Forecasters from NOAA have issued their 2025 Season Outlook for Atlantic Basin.&nbsp;Early predictions expect this year's hurricane season to be busier than average. This year they anticipate 13-19 named storms, 6-10 of which expected to become hurricanes and 3-5 of those to become major hurricanes (CAT 3 or greater).</p><p>This year is expected to be above average thanks to warm sea surface temperatures in the tropical Atlantic. Although we aren’t expecting the same extreme, record-breaking ocean heat from the last two years. While ENSO Neutral conditions are forecast to develop this summer, La Niña conditions that traditionally support tropical development <em>could</em> sneak back in by the fall. Despite uncertainty, forecasters feel that the <em>lack</em> of El Niño conditions is enough to warrant an active forecast.<span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 0)"> </span>El Niño means would mean warmer-than-normal water in the central and eastern [tropical] Pacific Ocean. That tends to create more wind shear to tear apart hurricanes in the Atlantic. Because El Niño is not expected to limit development, more hurricanes may form.</p><p>While seasonal outlooks give us some idea of what to expect, there is no way to know for certain just what the season will have in store for YOUR area.&nbsp; Seasonal outlooks cannot forecast exactly when, where, or if storm will strike. Remember, it only takes <em>one</em> to impact your area to become a "bad season".&nbsp; So, it's important to prepare before a storm threatens.</p><p>In preparation for the upcoming season, NOAA's National Hurricane Center is incorporating new tools and processes to keep the public better informed. Here's what's new this season:</p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/-Jaz3KuoQH0" start="0"></iframe></div><p></p><p><strong>LIVE INLAND? YOU AREN'T IMMUNE TO HURRICANES!</strong> Even if you live nowhere near a coastline, impacts from tropical systems can still occur. This lesson was learned during Hurricane Helene with historic, catastrophic flooding as far north as North Carolina. Inland rain and water are the deadliest parts of Tropical Storms and the impacts can spread far away from the immediate coastline.</p><p><strong>UNDERSTANDING STORM SURGE</strong> Along the coast, storm surge is often the greatest threat to life and property from a hurricane.&nbsp;&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/surge/">Storm surge</a> has come along with some of the most powerful storms in history.</p><h1>PREPARE AT HOME</h1><p><strong>GET YOUR SUPPLY KIT READY</strong> Once your know your risks, you should put together an essential hurricane supply kit. There's A LOT of jargon, phrases, and information that can make understanding tropical cyclones difficult. Understanding the basics may help when a storm threatens.</p><p><strong>WATCHES VS. WARNINGS</strong> Do you know the difference between a watch and a warning? What about all of the alerts issued during tropical season? Whenever a tropical cyclone (a tropical depression, tropical storm, or hurricane) or a subtropical storm has formed in the Atlantic or eastern North Pacific, the NOAA National Hurricane Center (NHC) issues tropical cyclone advisory products<em>&nbsp;at least</em> every 6 hours at 5 am, 11 am, 5 pm, and 11 pm EDT. A WATCH is issued when hurricane, tropical storm or storm surge conditions are expected within 48 hours. A WARNING is issued when life-threatening conditions are expected within 36 hours.</p><p><strong>WHAT IS THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON SCALE?</strong> The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale is a 1 to 5 rating based on a hurricane's sustained wind speed, with 5 being the highest. This scale estimates potential property damage. Hurricanes reaching Category 3 and higher are considered major hurricanes because of their potential for significant loss of life and damage. Category 1 and 2 storms are still dangerous, however, and require preventative measures.&nbsp; (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutsshws.php"><em>Source: NHC</em></a>)</p><p><strong>UNDERSTANDING THE FORECAST "CONE"</strong> Listening to forecast details can mean the difference between being prepared and caught off guard. Before a storm strikes, you'll often see a forecast "cone" to represent the expected forecast track of a system. The forecast cone <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutcone.shtml"><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0)">represents the probable track of the center of a tropical cyclone</span></a><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0)">. The width of the cone is based on historical forecast error percentage and uncertainty in the forecast. In 2024, NHC released an experimental version of the cone to not just communicate the center track, but to also show the widespread nature of potential impacts. They plan to fine tune and continue to use this concurrently until it becomes the primary forecast.</span></p><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/8klF8QpFKm8" start="0"></iframe></div><p><strong>WHAT PART OF A HURRICANE IS THE MOST POWERFUL?</strong> When a hurricane threatens landfall, most often the most impacts will be felt on the "front right quadrant" in relation to the direction of movement. Impacts can and will be felt on all "sides" of a storm, but the threat of highest winds, storm surge, and indirect impacts, such as tornadoes, are often increased in the front right quadrant.</p><h1>LOOKING BACK AT HURRICANE IKE</h1><p><span style="color: rgb(255, 255, 255)">We sat down with Dr. Jim Siebert and Meteorologist Dave Holder to talk about their experiences living through Hurricane Ike in 2008. <p><strong>KENTUCKY </strong>- Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said at least 19 Kentuckians are dead in a post on the social media platform X, after an onslaught of tornadoes and severe storms swept through the Bluegrass State over the weekend.&nbsp;</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1924161796463579369" src="https://x.com/GovAndyBeshear/status/1924161796463579369&nbsp;"></div><p>Seventeen of the deaths occurred in Laurel County, where the town of London, KY, took a direct hit from a damaging tornado. <span style="color: windowtext">&nbsp;</span></p><p><span style="color: windowtext">The latest from the National Weather Service in Paducah has confirmed that the London, Kentucky, tornado has been rated EF-4. <p>The United States is currently experiencing an Omega Block.  What is it?</p><p>Omega Block is a pressure pattern that resembles the Greek symbol 'Omega'.  It features two bookending areas of low pressure with an area of high pressure squeezed in the middle.  It's like a traffic jam in the atmosphere.  The two areas of low pressure move very slowly and can generate heavy precipitation (cool, cloudy and wet).  The high pressure tends to generate drier weather with above normal temps.</p><h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/tomer omega block -1746382229372.jpg">Traffic Jam</h1><p>The Western area of low pressure delivers colder than normal temps and heavy rain/snow depending on elevation.  We're forecasting heavy rainfall for Colorado and New Mexico (5/5-5/6).  Snow could exceed a foot in Colorado above 8,000ft.</p><p>The Eastern area of low pressure delivers rain, severe weather, and cooler than normal temps.  </p><p>The bottom line: This is a blocking pattern and expect slow movement.  </p>

GOES-16 will now become a backup for NOAA’s operational geostationary constellation, maintaining its operational readiness for future use, if needed.</p><p>“With GOES-19 now in operation, NOAA has delivered the full fleet of GOES-R satellites to orbit, providing the most sophisticated technology ever flown in space to help forecast weather on Earth,” said Stephen Volz, Ph.D., assistant administrator for NOAA’s Satellite and Information Service. “GOES-19 supports NOAA’s mission to provide secure and timely access to global environmental data and information to promote and protect the nation's security, environment, economy and quality of life.”</p><p>In its new role, GOES-19 will serve as NOAA's primary geostationary satellite for much of the Western Hemisphere. The program is a collaborative effort between NOAA and NASA. NASA builds and launches the satellites for NOAA. NOAA operates the satellites and distributes their data to users worldwide.&nbsp;</p><p>GOES-19 now joins GOES-18 (GOES West) in operational service. Together, the two satellites will continuously watch over more than half the globe, from the west coast of Africa to New Zealand and from near the Arctic Circle to the Antarctic Circle. NOAA GOES-19 Satellite Now Operational

<p>The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has retired three names from the 2024 hurricane name list. <strong>Beryl, Helene, </strong>and<strong> Milton</strong> are being replaced by <strong>Brianna, Holly, </strong>and<strong> Miguel</strong> on the rotating list. The WMO retires names of storms that were especially impactful and deadly. &nbsp;</p><p>During the 2024 season, the Atlantic Basin went through 18 named storms, 11 of which reached hurricane status. Five of those storms, Beryl, Debby, Francine, Helene, and Milton, impacted the continental United States. &nbsp;</p><h2><u>Hurricane Beryl</u>&nbsp;</h2><p>Beryl was the earliest Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic basin on record. The storm made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane in Grenada. Torrential rains and power winds brought widespread devastation to Carriacou and Petite Martinique, with upwards of 98% of homes damaged or destroyed.&nbsp;</p><p>Beryl went on to impact Jamaica and the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico before making landfall as a Category 1 hurricane in the U.S.&nbsp;</p><p>The hurricane was directly responsible for 34 direct fatalities. &nbsp;</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/04/VO_070224_INTL_CARRICOU, GRENADA_DAMAGE AFTER BERYL HIT GRENADA PEOPLE SEEM CHEERFUL_DICKON MITCHELL_SF_MR_E070324-1743622101649.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h2><u>Hurricane Helene</u>&nbsp;</h2><p>Helene made landfall as a Category 4 storm on the Florida Gulf Coast before pushing into the southern Appalachians. <p>A strong cold front steamrolling across the south has left a wake of damage and destruction since early Tuesday AM. Over 200 damaging wind reports from Texas to Florida and 8 tornado reports across Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma. The National Weather Service issued 40 tornado warnings and over 150 severe thunderstorm warnings throughout the day on Tuesday. This severe threat is ongoing today. Read more: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/Severe%20Threat%20Increasing%20Next%20Week%20Across%20the%20South">Wednesday's Severe Outlook</a></p><p>There have been several areas that received damage from Monday night to Tuesday morning's storms, including Ada, Oklahoma, where a tornado was confirmed by the National Weather Service. <p>The Storm Prediction Center has dropped tonight's outlook for severe weather across the Red River Valley of Oklahoma and Texas. Severe Threat Ends Overnight for Red River Valley

<h1>Hurricane Flossie</h1><p>The National Hurricane Center has found that <strong>Flossie</strong> has strengthened to a major, <strong>category 3</strong> hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph and pressure of 962 mb. Despite strengthening, there are no changes to the latest advisory. Hurricane Flossie Now A Major Hurricane

<p><strong>SOUTHEAST</strong> - A frontal boundary moving through the southeast has left a <strong>MARGINAL</strong> risk (level 1 out of 5) for severe storms across portions of the south, including Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and the Carolinas. The greatest storm potential was during peak afternoon heating, and now the leftovers have kept a narrow sliver of a risk overnight. While damaging winds are possible, storms are expected to remain loosely organized due to limited wind shear.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot 2025-07-01 210046-1751425252419.png"></p><h3>Looking Ahead</h3><p>Later this week, the frontal boundary is expected to stall. As it lingers, an area of low pressure may form along it. If that development occurs over the Atlantic waters or the eastern Gulf, the National Hurricane Center says there’s a <strong>medium chance (40%)</strong> for gradual tropical or subtropical development heading into the weekend.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/07-01_Rse set up-1751398286056.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Regardless of development, heavy rainfall is likely across portions of the Southeast. NHC Monitoring Front in the Southeast Ahead of 4th of July

<p>AAA is expecting over 70 million travelers to take to the roads and skies over the Fourth of July Weekend. Unfortunately, heavy rainfall could throw a wrench into those plans, as slow-moving systems keep rain chances around.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-30 073837-1751290861562.png"></p><h1>WEDNESDAY</h1><p>A busy week of travel will kick off for many as early as Wednesday. Where Rain Could Dampen Holiday Travel Plans

Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

<p>A shortwave trough will move across the plains, sparking up daily storm chances. This will continue over the next few days and into the holiday weekend.</p><h1><strong>OUTLOOKS </strong></h1><p>The Storm Prediction Center has highlighted various areas across the plains, with gusty winds and hail being the primary concern. Overnight, a weak shortwave trough will move east, allowing for enough instability to bring strong to severe storms. The threat will continue on Wednesday across portions of the Great Lakes, including the cities of Milwaukee, Traverse City, and Detroit.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/ovnergh-1751417236471.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/PLAINSSSS-1751417250384.png">On Thursday, the threat includes Montana and the Dakotas.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/KFKFKF-1751417265035.png"><strong>TIMING </strong></p><p>There will be enough energy to see some storms develop into the overnight hours. On Wednesday, a front drops down from Canada bringing the threat around the Great Lakes. <p>A cold front moving through a moist airmass has brought flooding and record rain across the east!  Martinsburg, WV and Islip, NY broke records for the daily rainfall. The heavy rain brought dangerous driving conditions for folks across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, and the threat of flooding continues overnight.  </p><h1>FLOODING THREAT</h1><p><strong>OVERNIGHT:</strong></p><p>After 4-5 inches of rain in southeast Pennsylvania, another few inches could worsen matters. The Weather Prediction Center has issued a <strong>Moderate</strong> risk for excessive rainfall for the area, a level 3 out of 4 risk.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/Screenshot 2025-07-01 122649-1751394710587.png">Some models have favored an additional  3+ inches across North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/07/WWW11-1751418395798.png"></p><h1>SEVERE THREAT</h1><p><strong>Overnight</strong>, the Storm Prediction Center has highlighted a <strong>Marginal </strong> (level 1 out of 5) risk along the east coast, with damaging winds being the biggest concern. Severe Storms For the East Coast Through Tuesday

Multiple rounds of severe storms have been moving across the Midwest these last few days, with multiple tornadoes touching down on consecutive nights. The incredible stretch of severe weather has been adding up this month. <p></p><p><strong>SOUTHEAST -</strong> Strong thunderstorms have developed over the Southeast over the last few days, causing tornadoes, damaging winds, and hail. The upper-level "heat dome" that has been steering storms westward over the past few days is being replaced by an upper-level low. The lift associated with this feature will create thunderstorm development each afternoon with daytime heating. Northern Georgia and up through the Smokies remain under a <strong>Marginal</strong> Risk for severe thunderstorms overnight. Thunderstorms Possible in the Southeast Overnight

<p><strong><span style="color: rgb(40, 42, 58)">EAST - Heat Advisories</span></strong><span style="color: rgb(40, 42, 58)"> and</span><strong><span style="color: rgb(40, 42, 58)"> Extreme Heat Warnings</span></strong><span style="color: rgb(40, 42, 58)"> continue across the eastern U.S. But, cooler temps are coming by the end of the week for most of the Northeast with a 20 degree temperature drop (or more). Boston, MA set an all-time June record high of 102 degrees on Tuesday. Philadelphia, PA hit 100 degrees for the first time in 13 years.</span></p><p><span style="color: rgb(40, 42, 58)">Why? A massive, high-pressure heat dome is in control of the East. Record Eastern Heat With Relief Coming

<p><strong>NEW MEXICO </strong>- A conveyor belt of moisture will bring heavy rain and storms to New Mexico over the next few days. A ridge of high pressure to the east and a trough to the west will help to funnel this moisture northbound. Thursday's heavy rain resulted with Ruidoso, NM under another Flash Flood Emergency as some of the creeks near the former burn scars became overwhelmed with a slow moving thunderstorm!</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/2025-06-24 08-11-37-1750767132922.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>In the short term, the flood risk is very isolated across New Mexico heading into the weekend!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/1-1750978118635.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/2-1750978123832.png"></p><p>The best chance of thunderstorms will occur during the afternoon and evening hours! Monsoon Season is Here As New Mexico's Flood Threat Increases

<p>Sounds like something out of science fiction, right? These are relatively rare, but sometimes, the temperature can jump rapidly in the early morning hours, like it did this morning in Perham, MN. So, how does it happen? What do you need to see the thermometer jump almost 20° without much warning? There are two big ingredients you'll need: a dying storm and some warm air just off the surface.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/08/Heatburst explained-1724599653047.png">As that storm falls apart, the rain-cooled air will shove the warmer, drier air down to the surface. The temperature shot from about 80 all the way up to 97 in a matter of 30 minutes between 7:00 and 8:00 AM.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-22 114637-1750614405520.png">Usually, these happen in the morning hours, when an inversion will displace the warmer air aloft as we cool off overnight.</p><p></p>

A Heat Burst Happened Sunday Morning: What Is It??

<p>Record highs are likely across the Northeast starting today and lasting through at least Wednesday. Over <strong>200 locations</strong> could tie or break records during this stretch! That heat is helping fire another batch of storms over the next few days. Wind and hail are the major impacts expected with the storms today, however a few tornado warnings were issued early Sunday AM.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-22 110511-1750611918938.png">A Flash Flood Emergency was issued for Chenango County in New York for significant rainfall and dangerous flooding. Water was reported to be approaching homes in the area. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-22 084016-1750603251527.png">A strong high-pressure system will begin building today and strengthen through the week, sending temperatures soaring. With a little more rain in the forecast Sunday, the Weather Prediction Center upgraded this area's expectation of excessive rainfall. </p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/2025-06-22 11-17-47-1750612771028.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Monday and Tuesday a front will scoot closer to the area, keeping the threat of severe weather around. Damaging winds look to be the most likely threat, especially Tuesday with the front. If it's not a little stormy, it's going to be really steamy. Highs in the mid to upper 90's will be easy to come by towards Tuesday. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-22 111351-1750612528516.png"></p><p></p><p></p>

Hot Weather Powers More Storms in the Northeast

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

<p>The summer solstice happened on Friday, June 20th, but apparently the Northern Rockies missed the memo. A cold (relatively) area of low pressure is dropping through the Northwest, creating rain, thunderstorms, and even heavy mountain snow. Kicking Off Summer with Rockies Snow

<p>Thursday's storms left a lot of residents in the dark across parts of the Interstate 95 region! Power crews have been working hard trying to get as many customers as possible back on board as the warm temperatures build in! If you decide to use a generator to power your home, please keep it away from windows and doors (at least 25 ft) to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.</p><h1>Next Round</h1><p>Another round of severe storms will be possible over the weekend, primarily farther north than Thursday's strongest storms. Energy from the Upper-Midwest moves through the Great Lakes late Friday, arriving in New York state on Saturday. Gusty winds are expected to be the main threat, meaning downed trees and power lines, in addition to a low-end tornado risk. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-20 091639-1750432617401.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-20 091643-1750432624603.png">The threat will continue Sunday morning as storms continue to move in from NW to SE.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/1-1750458862418.png"></p><p></p><h2>Forecast Timing</h2><p>Tonight, a few storms will try to build into Western NY and PA but they will fizzle as they move eastward! However, more severe storms will be likely on Saturday with leftover severe storms rolling out of Michigan. Storms Knock Out Power on the East Coast, More On the Way

<p>Major Hurricane Erick made landfall in extreme western Oaxaca, Mexico on Thursday June 19 around 5:30 am CT. Maximum sustained winds are estimated at 125 mph, with a central pressure of 950 mb.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1935664693391028289" src="https://x.com/NHC_Pacific/status/1935664693391028289"></div><p>Erick was a category 4 storm as it approached the southern coast of Mexico with winds maxing out at 140 mph. Erick underwent rapid intensification, a term used for storms that increase wind speeds of 35 mph in 24 hours. In 24 hours, Erick increased by 65 mph in 24 hours.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-19 050802-1750331299190.jpg">Erick is a now post tropical system as it continues to bring the threat of more flash flooding and mudslides in Mexico! Some of the moisture from Erick could move northward into the Desert SW next week!</p><p></p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot 2025-06-17 031736-1750151863022.png">The 2025 Eastern Pacific hurricane season is off to a record-breaking start, with five named storms: Alvin, Barbara, Cosme, Dalila, and now Erick. This level of early activity is well ahead of the seasonal average, which typically sees the first named storm by June 10, the second by June 24, and the third by July 6. Dalila forming on the 13th marked the fastest four storms to be named in the basin since record keeping began, beating 1974, which saw Dolores form by the 14th of June.</p><p><strong>ATLANTIC</strong></p><p>The Atlantic hurricane season, which began on June 1, has remained quiet with no named storms forming so far. This lack of activity is being attributed to three key atmospheric factors: persistent wind shear, marginally warm water temperatures, and the presence of Saharan dust. <span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0)">&nbsp;</span></p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-29 104826-1748537463299.png">The Saharan dust, which often travels westward from Africa, can suppress tropical development by introducing dry, stable air into the atmosphere. In addition, wind shear is disrupting the organization of tropical waves and disturbances, preventing them from developing into more significant systems. While sea surface temperatures are warm enough to support storm formation, they are not as favorable as in recent years, further limiting activity.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/1-1750388233251.png"></p><p>Although the Atlantic is off to a slow start, this is not unusual for June. Historically, tropical activity in the Atlantic does not typically ramp up until later in the summer, particularly in August and September, with the peak occurring around the 15th of September.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/06/Day1SVR-1749823458384.png"></p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/05/Screenshot 2025-05-29 104849-1748537876634.png">For now, the quiet beginning to the season is considered perfectly normal.<span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0)">&nbsp;</span>The early season will more often see more tropical storms than hurricanes, but hurricanes can form and impact the United States, so it's <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/hurricane-prep-week-2025"><u>always best to be prepared</u></a>.
