We have had a warm October for much of the lower 48, and the record heat continues with a ridge of high pressure out across most of the Central and Eastern U.S.! <h2>Midwest</h2>Multiple record highs were set Monday in Michigan. Alpena saw a record high of 84°, beating out the previous record of 78°.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/MICHIGAN GGGGGG-1729558442924.png">A cold front will move across the northern U.S., bringing temperatures back to more seasonable levels by mid-week for the Northern Plains. The Twin Cities will feel a 20° temperature swing in 24 hours.<h2><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-21 135638-1729540603118.png">Northeast</h2>Similar to the Midwest, the Northeast will feel the cooldown by Thursday. Until the cooler air arrives, widespread warmth was felt across the area including several spots across New York City.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-22 073611-1729604187718.jpg">After Wednesday, temperatures look like they'll back off through this weekend, so this won't be a long-lived warm stretch. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-22 073730-1729604290680.jpg"><h2>South</h2>This is where the warmer weather could linger for a lot longer. The upper-level pattern will keep the warm weather nearby for the foreseeable future. Places like Phoenix will return to record territory, something they've become used to since the middle of September. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-22 074039-1729604449395.jpg">The hot weather will spread into the southern plains as well. More Record Highs in Trouble Today

Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. According to climatology, about 10% of the seasonal energy is left for hurricane season now that we're in late October. Seasonal energy is measured by accumulated cyclone energy, also known as ACE. According to<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/outlooks/hurricane2003/August/background_information.html#:~:text=The%20measure%20of%20overall%20activity,at%20least%20tropical%20storm%20strength."> NOAA</a>, ACE is essentially a "wind energy index" and based on that, the season can be defined as extremely active, above-average, near-average, and below-normal. In the Atlantic, the storms this season have brought us to an ACE value of 144, which is considered to be above average.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-22 061936-1729599583974.jpg">The forecast for the season called for above-average activity as well. Here is how the 2024 Atlantic season has been so far.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-21 133946-1729539668522.jpg"><h1>Oscar</h1>Oscar officially made landfall in Cuba in the province of Guantanamo, near the city of Baracoa on Sunday, October 20th.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-20 161952-1729462798158.png">Oscar continues to move north-northeast with a faster motion expected on Tuesday and Wednesday. Tropical storm conditions are expected through Tuesday for portions of the Bahamas which have been put under tropical storm warnings now. Rainfall amounts of 3-5 inches with isolated totals up to 8" are possible in the Bahamas and storm totals for Cuba could reach 20".<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-22 061524-1729599452838.jpg"><h1>Eastern Pacific</h1>Tropical Storm Kristy formed on Monday afternoon. Kristy will continue to move in a more favorable environment and likely strengthen into a hurricane.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-22 061624-1729599460739.jpg"> The NHC has Kristy becoming a hurricane on Tuesday and strengthening as far as a major, category 3 later this week. It was a soggy stretch across Oregon and Washington this past weekend and Monday, as some areas of Washington picked up 2-3 inches of rainfall, wetting down any chance to get outdoors. Tuesday, looks to dry out across the northwestern U.S. as we anticipate our next rain chances to move back in on Wednesday. One of the national centers, the Climate Prediction Center (CPC), takes the lead in presenting these seasonal outlooks. Officials at NOAA's CPC say La Niña is one of the key factors for this upcoming weekend. The agency expects the winter weather pattern to evolve through February and even March.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-17 110044-1729185345413.png">At the top of this article, you'll find the temperature outlook for the mainland U.S. The Southwest, Deep South, Southeast, and East Coast are expected to have a mild winter, while the northern High Plains and Pacific Northwest are expected to have a cooler winter. The precipitation outlook follows the same general pattern, with some wetter weather possible in the Upper Midwest, Ohio Valley, and Great Lakes.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/LA NINA MOVIE LYNX-1729185478917.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>CPC expects La Niña to develop throughout the winter months, which typically leads to a more northerly storm track, leaving the southern tier of the country warmer and drier. As a result, widespread relief from drought does not appear likely across the South.&nbsp;With this pattern, there is a snowy potential across parts of the Upper Midwest and Pacific Northwest. NOAA'S Winter Outlook Released

The same system that brought heart-breaking flooding to New Mexico has been pushing east on Monday after sitting and spinning on top of the Four Corners all weekend.Related Story: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/storm-and-snow-chances-rise-across-new-mexico">Historic Rain Falls in New Mexico</a>The Storm Prediction Center continues to issue a marginal risk overnight for portions of Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma. As a trough of low pressure moves through, a few storms will stick around tonight and can be strong to severe. By tomorrow morning, things will be much calmer for your Tuesday morning.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/lojoj-1729558891357.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Thankfully, rainfall amounts don't look to overwhelm the dry soils in Kansas or Oklahoma, where any of this rainfall is sorely needed. Overnight Severe Threat in the Plains

The slow-moving upper-level low is still spinning in the Rocky Mountains Monday morning, spinning through lingering snow chances. This system brought plenty of snow to the Four Corners, with some areas picking up 7-8 inches over the weekend. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-21 071644-1729516615712.jpg">As the snow continues to fall, portions of the I-70 corridor could become slick. Snow in the Rockies Lingers Into Monday

Roswell picked up over 5 inches of rain in a single afternoon, the most rain they have ever seen in a 24-hour period (above). Ever. That lead to horrible flash flooding prompting a Flash Flood Emergency in Roswell Saturday night.New Mexico and far West Texas could be in store for another day of severe weather and flash flooding. An upper-level low and a surface front are expected to bring a mix of snow, heavy rainfall, and the heightened possibility of tornadoes.&nbsp;Saturday night, a Flash Flood Emergency was issued for Roswell, NM with the nearly 6 inches of rain that fell over the city.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/VO_101924_RSW_ROSWELL, NM_LOOK HOW MUCH FLOODING NOW, CANT SEE PART OF THE SIDEWALK ANYMORE_EARTHCAM_DW_E101924-1729393911277.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>On the severe side, all modes of severe weather will be in play into Monday morning, including isolated tornadoes. The Storm Prediction Center issued a slight risk (level 2 out of 5) for the possibility of strong storms.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/PIC 1-1729461603661.jpg">For the rest of the night, we will still be looking at an ongoing flash flooding threat and severe threat across the eastern sections of New Mexico! Flash Flooding and Storm Chances Continue Across New Mexico

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

We were setting new record lows toward the end of the week, it's been that cold across the eastern half of the United States. The "fields" had frost on them, as Westfield and Bluefield both sank to freezing levels, tying and establishing a new record minimum temperature for Saturday morning. The cold air is thanks, in large part, to a strong area of high pressure across the Northeast.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-19 161621-1729376186595.png">Another cool start for portions of Pennsylvania, New York, and Connecticut is in place for Sunday morning.Temperatures Sunday morning will fall to the 30s in some spots. After Sunday, lows will climb back closer to seasonal.Temperatures will start to thaw over the next few days. Although it's a little brisk in the mornings, highs will be warmer than average over the next few days. Places like NYC should be in the low 60s, instead, the highs will be in the 70s!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-19 161916-1729376360897.png">We continue to monitor the impacts of Hurricane Helene in western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. Feeling Like OctoBRRR To End the Weekend

PHOENIX, AZ - The streak. Is finally. OVER! On Tuesday, Phoenix, Arizona was only 9 degrees above average. We say this in a bit of jest, but Tuesday's high temperature DID NOT break a record for the first time in three weeks! Prior to that, Phoenix had tied or broken a daily high temperature record for 21 straight days.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1846348603528565011" src="https://twitter.com/NWSPhoenix/status/1846348603528565011"></div>The 21 straight days of temperature records is a record itself. The city had not experienced three straight weeks of record highs since record keeping began. Thankfully, this stretch of heat has abated.<h2>Southwest</h2>A late-week trough will be responsible for bringing a halt to record-high temperatures. This trough will bring much cooler temperatures to the southwest and for the first time in months - below average temperatures are possible this weekend!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-17 072639-1729171606280.png">In Phoenix, we may actually experience below-average temperatures for a change. We will remain above average until the latter half of the work week when temperatures are forecast to drop below 80° for the first time since April 14th - that's 184 days of above 80° highs.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-17 072435-1729171521734.png">In Las Vegas, highs will cool as low as the 60s this weekend. The last time we were this cool was also back in April!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-17 072353-1729171495180.png"><h2>Southern Plains</h2>Changes are brewing for the south-central U.S. too. Oklahoma City and Dallas will drop below average as early as Wednesday! Even Houston will drop our 90-degree highs and replace them with 70s. Record Breaking Heat Comes to a Close

Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. It has been an incredible year for space phenomena! <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/eclipse-2024">The Eclipse</a> captured the country's interest in April before two incredible displays of the Aurora Borealis down to Southern Latitudes in both <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/aurora-borealis-stuns-Friday-Night">May</a> and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/northern-lights-put-on-dazzling-show-thursday-night">October</a>. Now, stargazers and astronomy lovers could be treated to one of the best comets of the decade through late October. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-12 125001-1728759013410.png">Comet C / 2023 (A3), also known as Comet <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://blogs.nasa.gov/Watch_the_Skies/2024/10/02/ancient-oort-cloud-comet-to-make-first-documented-pass-by-earth-in-mid-october/">Tsuchinshan-ATLAS,</a> last passed the earth about 80,000 years ago, but was only discovered last year! This Oort cloud comet has been gracing the morning skies in the Southern Hemisphere over the last few weeks as it approached and moved around the sun. The comet is now passing Earth at its closest distance in its current orbit and is now expected to move away and slowly fade from view. Because of this movement away from Earth, seeing the comet earlier in the month will likely provide the best viewing conditions!<h1>How to See the Comet</h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Comet-C-2023-A3-Map-ST-version-1728759033662.jpg">Timing for this event will be important, as the comet will only be visible for a short time in the evening before it dips below the horizon, especially earlier in the month. For the first few nights of viewing, the comet will appear low on the western horizon to the right of Venus (by about two fists held at arm's length). Be sure to be ready around sunset with a clear western horizon and something to be able to zoom in, like binoculars or a telescope. If you're lucky, it may be visible to the naked eye, but the tail may not be visible unless you use magnifying equipment.<h1>Comet Observations</h1>People around the country with clear skies were able to view and photograph the comet on Monday evening<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1846234591281271013" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1846234591281271013"></div>As the month continues, the comet will gradually appear higher above the western horizon, but it is expected to fade as the month progresses. Here is where you'll need to look for the evening of October 16th.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-15 122430-1729016690117.jpg">Clear skies will be a must but getting away from city lights will also help the comet stand out as dusk fades into night. Binoculars, a telescope, or a zoom lens on a camera are recommended to help see features of the comet!<h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-12 132817-1728761329247.jpg">Cloud Cover</h1>Clouds could be an issue for portions of the Great Lakes and Northeast. Comet Visible for the Northern Hemisphere in the Evenings

SHERIDAN, WY - The Elk Fire continues to burn in northern Wyoming near Sheridan, the acreage has increased to 91k acres with containment at 28%. Today's forecast calls for increased fire activity because of unseasonably warm temperatures, dry fuels, and low humidity. This fire was caused by lightning.Fire weather alerts have been issued for through the weekend as our weather pattern begins to change! Expect more rain in the forecast and even some high-country snow, but for now, it is the gusty winds and dry air. Here are the areas of concern, where anything that can spark a flame is not advised!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/1-1729112526039.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/1-1729112590584.png">In addition to the Elk Fire burning in the Big Horn National Forest, the Pack Trail Fire continues to burn over 86k acres. Together, these fires have burned nearly 180k acres.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/1-1729113059865.png">Air Quality Alerts remain in effect in close proximity to burning fires, due to lofted wildfire smoke. This smoke is expected to get caught in the jet stream and occasionally push into places like Denver and Rapid City.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/1-1729127775255.png">Meanwhile, fires continue to burn across Southern California. The Line Fire, which has had trouble containing, continues to burn. SARANAC LAKE, NY - The Adirondacks have seen their first snowfall of the season on Monday! Most of these flurries melted upon contact, but, according to the National Weather Service in Burlington, VT, snow levels for the Adirondacks have come down to about 1800 feet with a few reports of 1-2" over elevated and grassy surfaces.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1845826909281947839" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1845826909281947839"></div>Monday's gloomy skies and intermittent rain will be tough to shake, along with the cooler weather behind. Rainfall totals have climbed up to nearly 2" in upstate New York.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Rain reports-1728907052119.jpg">The Storm Prediction Center has issued "general" thunderstorm outlooks for the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley through tonight with some of the remnants of this system pushing through.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-15 121853-1729016405450.jpg">We expect scattered showers and storms to continue. CAPE CANAVERAL - NASA's Europa mission began on Monday, shortly after 12:00 PM ET. They couldn't have drawn up any better weather for a launch, with temperatures in the upper 70's and hardly a cloud in the sky.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/liftoff temps-1728924781355.jpg">As a matter of fact, you could see the launch from GOES East, the satellite we use to monitor the weather from space! Look carefully and you can pick out when the rocket took off from Cape Canaveral. While Hurricane Milton was approaching Tampa Bay and Sarasota on Wednesday, tornadoes were tearing across the eastern part of Florida. A distance of 200 miles away from the storm's center, many Floridians found themselves seeking shelter in the path of numerous tornado warnings.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1844129430874267922" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1844129430874267922"></div>Tornado reports are slowly starting to trickle in from different weather service offices in Florida. Let's start in Fort Pierce. The above VIDEO was an EF-3 tornado with winds of 155 mph. This tornado sadly claimed the lives of several people on Wednesday. The next report (below) is from the Palm Beach Gardens and Wellington, FL area. Thursday night will be a night many people will remember, and cherish, for the rest of their lives. The Northern Lights put on a brilliant display, wowing millions of people across the United States.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-11 074847-1728655387759.png">A strong geomagnetic storm began to impact Earth on Thursday afternoon, East coast time, and some wondered if it would last long enough until nightfall and allow residents of the U.S. to view it. Well, it did last.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1844569999253414380" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1844569999253414380"></div>The Aurora Borealis was visible in New England, the Great Lakes, the mid-Atlantic, even down to the Gulf Coast states! The answer to that is "Likely." We say that, because the show of the Northern Lights on Thursday night was the second time this week that we have had a show of the Aurora! There was another big solar event on Monday night, too.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-11 074810-1728656118422.png">The forecast for Friday night into Saturday morning, October 11th into the 12th, is for the Aurora to not be as intense as it was Thursday night. It could still be visible on the horizon from Seattle to Sioux Falls to Detroit and to Portland, Maine.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/1-1728672341109.png">Thursday night's solar storm was rated a "G4" short for Geomagnetic Storm. That's classified as a severe solar storm. Think of the G scale as the EF scale for tornadoes, or the Saffir-Simpson scale for hurricanes. The range is 1 to 5, 5 being most intense. Friday night, the forecast is for a G2.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/1-1728672388820.png">The aurora will still be visible as this strong solar event continues. How about cloud cover?<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-11 074827-1728656336942.png">The best viewing appears to be in northern Michigan, northern Minnesota, and northern Montana. Other states could get obscured by clouds.If you have FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) about the aurora, fret not. We are in a solar maximum cycle. More of these events will be likely through 2025.
