CALIFORNIA - Tropical moisture is being directed towards California with intense amounts of rainfall in the forecast ahead. Unfortunately, this system comes in on the warm side, so snow levels will be high before dropping Tuesday night.<h1>Rain &amp; Flooding</h1>Over the next week, a foot or more of rain is forecast to fall over the Central and Northern Sierra, which is likely to lead to significant flooding issues, especially Sunday into Monday. Flood watches have been issued for the remainder of the week and are in effect until Friday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-21 141344-1766351636076.png"> As we head into the work week, our moisture is mostly about the rain, as snow levels will be too high to impact travel or where many people live. Heavy rain will continue almost non-stop until midday Monday. A brief break precedes another round that comes with colder temperatures Tuesday through Thursday.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/EEEV-1766435182161.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>This rainfall will move down to Southern California by Christmas Eve. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-22 143504-1766439311591.png">The WPC has issued excessive rainfall outlooks for the next five days, including a HIGH risk on Wednesday in southern California. This means that significant events of flash flooding will be possible, so take any warning seriously. Of particular concern will be the burn scars around Los Angeles, where heavy rainfall will run off even faster.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/FJFJFLLS-1766435089066.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Here's a look at where the high risk is, impacting a large number of people who may be traveling this holiday season.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/HIGH RISK WPS-1766435322950.png"><h1>Snow</h1>Heavy snow will accumulate over the high terrain, and eventually down to around 5,000 feet in elevation by the middle/end of the week. Snow through Tuesday is heavy above 8-9,000 feet, with over a foot for some locations.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-22 111928-1766427590011.png">Traveling over I-80 in the days ahead? Flooding is likely to be a bigger issue than snow, though the overnight hours may see some wet snowfall. Snow levels will drop with temperatures toward the middle of the week, which will also slow down travel. Winter storm watches will go into effect late Monday for some areas; however, the higher terrain of Tuolumne County (including Yosemite NP) has a winter storm warning already in effect. 6-8 feet of snow are expected.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-22 112006-1766427629234.png">

Atmospheric River Brings Major Flood Potential to California

Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

Unseasonably warm temperatures continue to dominate much of the western and now south-central United States, as an area of high pressure keeps the jet stream north, helping to lock in the warm air. Another round of records was set on Sunday across the South! Brownsville, Texas, set a new record of 87°, surpassing the previous record of 86°. Houston, Texas, tied the previous record of 82°.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/SUNDAY REC-1766360401123.png">The warm temperatures are bringing a spring-like feel to cities across the southwest. Denver and Albuquerque normally see highs in the 40s, but will be pushing well into the 60s and even 70s.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/2025-12-22 07-08-46-1766412615922.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>This ridge of high pressure will continue to keep the warm temperatures around, heading towards the Christmas Holidays, but shifting farther east into Texas and Oklahoma.<h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-22 111525-1766427347928.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-22 111541-1766427392601.png">WHEN WILL IT STOP</h1>As we look at the temperature trend for December 27th - 31st, there is strong confidence that a large portion of the country will be well above average. Record Warmth looking to Roast Christmas Day

Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. NORTHEAST: The northeastern United States is in for a few quick-moving clipper systems this week, leading up to Christmas. These systems could bring minor travel impacts, especially on Tuesday. A fast-moving clipper is forecast to move through Tuesday, bringing rain near the Great Lakes and snow farther inland. Brief Snow Before Christmas in the Northeast

Does it feel like deja vu? This persistent pattern, locked in for most of December, has some side effects. No snow for the west! While areas around the Midwest are experiencing their snowiest start to the Winter in years, areas out west are looking at their slowest start to the water year.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-17 090611-1765987589484.png">Take, for instance, the Pacific Northwest. They've been seeing the worst of both patterns: warm systems that bring inundating rainfall to the area, without the benefits of slow-melting snowfall, keeping watersheds fed with a much-needed, consistent water source.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-21 141153-1766351518447.png">Other areas like Colorado have seen a fairly soggy past month, but got off to one of the latest starts to winter on record in Denver. AAA expects an increase in travelers compared to last year, 2024. AAA expects 8.03 million people to be traveling to their destinations for the holidays via airplane. End of Year Travel Expected to Break Records

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. WEST - A river of moisture has been directed towards the western United States for the last week, bringing record rainfall, historic river flooding, and damage to homes and property. While this river will shift to California through some of the early weekend, we're still not out of the woods in the Pacific Northwest.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="2001283739846906166" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/2001283739846906166"></div><h1>Forecast Timing</h1>Moving forward, the heaviest of the rain will be focused in on California. However, our northwestern mountains will be stuck in the clouds so we can expect heavy snowfall totals to start to accumulate. Most of these systems have been seeing warm moisture as opposed to cold moisture, so snow levels have been quite high. With the cooler Pacific air behind the system, it should be could enough to keep accumulating snowfall.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/FORECAST-1766193036916.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>As snow levels drop, winter weather will complete the trifecta of weather hazards with this system. As wind intensifies once again across the Front Range with a dry, downsloping wind, fire weather conditions have dramatically increased. In fact, the Storm Prediction Center has issued a somewhat rare Critical Fire Risk from Boulder to Cheyenne (above).<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-19 123816-1766173281347.png">Red Flag Warnings will remain in place across the Denver metro area, northward into the High Plains of Wyoming, for the rest of the night.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-19 123131-1766173410757.png"><div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/YPs_4Hc38Ok" start="0"></iframe></div>In addition, within the Red Flag Warning is a higher-end, PDS (Particularly Dangerous Situation) Warning. Here, to the west of a line from Golden to Boulder to Lyons, wind gusts could exceed 100mph! With down-sloping winds, relative humidity will be low, possibly dropping into the single digits at times.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-19 123825-1766173570820.png">Enhancing the wildfire potential is the amount of fuel. The Front Range of northern Colorado into Wyoming has been very dry as of late. A Moderate to Severe Drought remains highlighted across the entire Red Flag Warning area.

It's been a cold start to the week for millions! Areas around the Great Lakes and Ohio River Valley took the most recent Arctic outbreak on the chin, with temperatures plummeting below zero in some instances. On Monday, as winds flipped out of the south, we began to thaw out and most of us are feeling either seasonable or above average by Wednesday. However......The Arctic air isn't getting shoved too far away. This week, we unlock another block of the cold stuff and slide it southward. The good news? It looks like it's not quite as brutal as the last shot.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/PIC 2-1766108303423.jpg">A system will emerge out of the Rockies again, moving into much warmer temperatures by Wednesday. How much rain/snow/mud will that system drop? Relate Article: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/rainy-system-to-move-over-snow">Sloppy System Moves into the Midwest</a>More importantly, the temperatures swinging on the other side of it will send another chill down the spine of the Heartland. Wednesday night will be the rudest, while Thursday night will likely be the coldest, but should see the winds subsiding. Bismarck, the usual poster child for nasty cold, will only top out in the single digits Thursday afternoon and Grand Forks will be near 20 below Friday AM.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Web 4-1766069713419.png">Like a trampoline, temperatures rebound the following day for most.

NORTHERN PLAINS - A low-pressure system originating from the northwest has moved through the plains and is now pushing into the Great Lakes. This system will move into warmer air, so models are favoring rainfall, as opposed to snowfall. There are winter alerts and blizzard warnings that remain in effect for snow and low visibility. Wind gusts can be as high as 70 mph, with an additional 1-4" of snowfall in the blizzard warning.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-18 075831-1766069925707.png">There have been several recently clipper systems that moved into the Northern tier of the country. The systems dumped a decent amount of snowfall, whch lead to a a decent snowpack on the ground across the plains and the Great Lakes.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-18 075856-1766070030595.png">With this next system moving in and bringing rain, this could lead to a bit of slush out there as the rain melts away the snowfall. Messy System Moving into the Midwest

Rounds of arctic air have been funneling in from the north, and those bitterly cold temperatures remain this week. There are widespread cold alerts (above) from the Midwest all the way down to the Gulf Coast! Millions are waking up and feeling the chill Monday morning. Feels like temperatures have dropped anywhere from -15° to -25°. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-15 043840-1765798727558.png">High pressure will slide in over the next day or two, bringing back some thawing temperatures. We'll start to feel better by this afternoon, with temperatures threatening some record highs by Tuesday! <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-14 115901-1765738749952.png">Tell that to folks waking up in the southeast, though! Arctic Blast Settles into the Southeast

So far this winter season, the major cities along Interstate 95 haven't seen much snow! Some areas of New York and West Virginia have picked up over a FOOT of snow from this weekend's system.As we head into the work week, the National Weather Service has left lingering lake effect snow warnings in place for the snowbelt regions of the northeast for additional snowfall through Monday. In fact, another system drops through the Great Lakes early Monday to add to some snowfall totals in these regions.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-14 182316-1765761932562.png">Snowfall totals through Monday look to be locally heavy, but widespread the heaviest of the snowfall has already happened. Breaking Out the Shovels in the Northeast

Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

A series of clipper systems continues to track from the Midwest into the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic through Sunday. The first system brought around 2-6" of snow from Iowa into Virginia last Thursday night into early Friday.The next system is trekking east with another round of snow and much colder air, bringing some snowy impacts to the coast through Sunday. Alerts are in place for snowfall that's expected to be slightly heavier than the first round! With colder temperatures in place, fluffier snow is expected, which could add up more quickly. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-13 202643-1765682809765.png">Snowfall is gradually winding down from west to east and will continue to do so overnight, with continued snow and gusty winds over the spine of the Appalachians for Sunday. <video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/New Baron Video 3-1765682650515.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Snowfall totals could top 4-6" in numerous areas (dark blue/purple colors - top of page) with 1-3" for areas outside of the main bands. One of the best meteors showers of the year is expected to peak this weekend, with ideal viewing conditions producing up to 100 meteors per hour! The Geminid Meteor shower rivals the Perseids for the most prolific of the year, but it does happen in December so it is a much colder astronomical event to take in. Geminids tend to be bright and fast, producing tails of yellow. They originate from debris left behind from comet/asteroid 3200 Phaethon. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-13 070941-1765635559162.png">Most viewers in dark skies can expect to see about 40-50 meteors per hour, about one every minute or 90 seconds. Getting away from city lights will help you spy more meteors, especially earlier in night since the moon will be rising after midnight. I would recommend heading out to watch about two hours after sunset and settling in until the moonlight begins to influence viewing conditions.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-13 071009-1765635567841.png">Cloud cover can completely ruin meteor shower viewing, and unfortunately a lot of people from the Ohio Valley into the Southeast will have some cloud cover to completely cloudy skies Saturday night. The Western U.S. will have better viewing conditions, as will parts of Florida. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-13 071934-1765635594077.png">The other factor that may keep you inside is the extreme cold spilling across the country. Temperatures are expected to be below freezing and even below zero for many along and north of I-40. Mild temperatures will persist in the South and West.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-13 071945-1765635600044.png">While meteors will appear to originate from the constellation Gemini in the eastern sky, try to watch as much of the sky as possible to view the highest number of meteors. You'll miss most meteors if you use binoculars or a telescope so just watch naturally, hopefully lying on your back for awhile to let you eyes adjust. Happy hunting!

NORTHEAST - The northeastern U.S. is in for some wintry weather over the course of the week, with a couple of clipper systems dropping down from the northern Plains. The clippers continue with a fast-moving clipper system that will move out of the Upper Midwest and into the interior of the Northeast on Wednesday. This system will bring a brief but disruptive round of winter weather to several states. As the system pushes east, a wide swath of Winter Weather Advisories and Warnings is issued across the Interior Northeast and the higher elevations of the Appalachians. Snowfall totals across this region&nbsp;will range from 4 to 6 inches.&nbsp;<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/12-09_rne-1765403705611.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>One of the most significant impacts will come from a corridor of Blizzard Warnings in the Central Appalachians. In this region, snow accumulations of three to six inches combined with wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour will create dangerous whiteout conditions and severely reduced visibility. Travel will be extremely difficult to nearly impossible at times, as blowing snow-coated roads and obscured sight lines will be possible.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-10 040825-1765364957335.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-10 145530-1765403760115.png">Farther north, Snowfall totals will be even heavier in the snowbelts, where lake effect snowfall is expected to pick up throughout the week. Communities across the Tug Hill Plateau and the western Adirondacks can pick up up between 8 and 16 inches of snow, continuing an active stretch of winter weather for upstate New York.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-10 113556-1765391765064.png">Winds will be a problem for visibility late Wednesday into Thursday as the front moves through. Widespread 30-40 mph gusts are expected.Another clipper is forecast to track quickly behind it on Thursday, threatening parts of the Northern High Plains and the Ohio Valley with a mix of heavy snow and pockets of freezing rain. In anticipation, Winter Storm Watches are already issued in eastern Montana, signaling the potential for another round of hazardous travel and wintry disruptions.&nbsp;Be cautious because the air will turn cold later this week in places that receive rain from these clippers, while the roads remain wet, black ice could be a problem at the end of the week.

DENVER, CO - Denver saw its first significant snow this season earlier this week, with 6.5 inches reported downtown! The highest totals were reported in the higher elevations, with 11 inches recorded in Genesee.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-04 095720-1764867453909.png"><h1>Forecast Snow</h1>Further snow is in store for the Rocky Mountains as a frontal system dives in. Precipitation began in northern Utah Friday evening and will spread across Colorado overnight and into Saturday morning. Another round of snow is likely for the weekend with higher moisture content coming from the Northwest.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-05 202547-1764991557250.png"><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/rockieswnoww-1764991689293.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>With today's round and our late-week round, snowfall totals may reach upwards of a foot plus in the higher elevations.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot 2025-12-05 202838-1764991729249.png">This snowfall is more than welcome for some of the ski resorts in the Rockies.
