Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

Tropical Storm Milton has formed. On satellite imagery, the area of circulation has become more defined. Forecast models show Tropical Storm Milton trending toward a category 3 storm on Tuesday. Expect widespread heavy rain, strong winds, and life-threatening storm surge for Florida's west coast.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/WEBESITEEEEE-1728162584162.png">This storm has the potential for surge over 9-12 feet for areas south of the center. If the center stays north of Tampa Bay, it would mean the surge could TOP the record 6-8 ft surge brought by Helene less than two weeks prior. THIS WILL CHANGE WITH EXACT TRACK AND INTENSITY, so please stay updated by checking the forecast at least once a day.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-05 090342-1728140632567.png">Scattered storms will be focused in the Central and Western Gulf into Saturday, with some intense downpours and strong storms possible for Florida's west coast and southern Texas. Storms shift back to the east Sunday through Midweek as the tropical system moves east toward Florida. A historic fall heatwave continues across the Southwest, with hundreds of record highs in jeopardy through the weekend. A strong, upper-level ridge of high pressure remains in control in the region, with a slight weakening of the ridge expected into next week.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/1-1728097123011.png"> Phoenix has been on a ridiculous streak of breaking record highs. After warming up to 108°, Phoenix has officially broken another record for the 11th consecutive day. Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

BOISE, ID—The Valley Fire, a new fire east of Boise, Idaho, started on Friday. It is located along Highway 21 near Highland Valley Summit (SE of Boise). The NWS encourages citizens to avoid the area while crews work on containment.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/1-1728097637855.png">Red Flag Warnings have been issued across much of the Northern Plains and parts of the Intermountain West. As a cold front continues to move through, winds will pick up. Gusty winds and low relative humidity will combine to increase fire chances. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/fire weather aelrts today-1728135291779.png">Wind alerts have also been issued for parts of the Northern plains. These alerts remain in place today, as there can be gusts up to 70 mph! Fire Danger Continues Into The Weekend

Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). IOWA - Strong storms moved through Iowa earlier this morning producing some large hail. The largest reports we've seen were in Pella, Iowa where golf-ball-sized hail moved through.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-04 115504-1728064765664.jpg">Another incoming cold front (above) will help to trigger the chance for some thunderstorms across the Upper Midwest/Great Lakes on Saturday. Rainfall elsewhere looks fairly minimal.The Storm Prediction Center has issued a SLIGHT (level 2 out of 5) and MARGINAL (level 1 out of 5) risk for severe storms on Saturday across portions of Wisconsin, and Michigan. Fall Fronts Spark Hail and Wind Threat

The state of Alabama is prone to seeing various types of weather from severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, and winter weather. For college, Jesse attended the University of South Alabama where he received his degree in Broadcast Meteorology along with minors in Math and Geography. While tropical activity in the Atlantic tends to trend down through October, impactful systems can and do occur during the final two months of hurricane season. Friday, Kirk rapidly intensified and is currently a category 4, with sustained winds of 130 mph. Now, Kirk has weaken to a Category 3 storm. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-05 053722-1728128250394.png">Thankfully, this system is expected to do what many tropical waves have done this season in the MDR - Main Development Region, curving north into the middle of the Atlantic. Just to the east of Kirk is now Hurricane Leslie. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/1-1728097488196.png">This small system is forecast to strengthen to Category ONE, follow a similar path to Kirk, and currently, no impact land.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/1-1728097537904.png"><h1>Pacific Ocean</h1>We are still monitoring an area of interest in the Pacific. Tropical Update: Kirk & Leslie in the Central Altantic, Another Landfall in Mexico

From being the strongest hurricane to make landfall on Florida's Big Bend Region, to causing unprecedented flooding in the Appalachians, Hurricane Helene will go down in History.Helene made landfall last Thursday as a Category 4 Hurricane with sustained winds of 140 mph, just 10 miles WSW of Perry, FL. Record storm surge for Cedar Key, FL of over 10ft. The storm was still a category 2 hurricane as it moved into Georgia and continued to lift north on an 800-mile path. The destructive forecast for Helene verified as this tropical system dumped over 30" of rain over the Appalachians. The aftermath was described by the local national weather service office as "the worst event in our office's history."<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/LL_100124_TRT 2.56_WILL TALKS THROUGH DAMAGE IN ERWIN TN_WILL NUNLEY_BH_100124-1727874366194.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The water is receding uncovering washed-out roadways, debris from homes washed off their foundation and some people are still left stranded or unaccounted for. Roads washed out. Whole towns were destroyed. Two feet of rain. This all occurred across parts of the southern Appalachians as Helene dissipated on Friday.<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/tropical-impacts-in-the-gulf-of-mexico#google_vignette">Related Article: Helene Makes Landfall as a Category 4 Hurricane</a>Water levels remain high in parts of Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia. Please seek additional information, preferably from at least two sources, about evacuations, flood warnings, safety messages, and news alerts regarding this actively changing situation. Also, it's important to double-check information. On Friday, incorrect information was given regarding a catastrophic dam failure in Tennessee, when it didn't happen.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/1-1727549745032.png">Storm total rainfall has been as high as 30" across parts of North Carolina. It's important to note, this includes rain before Hurricane Helene arrived. The rainfall listed above is from Wednesday, September 25, and beyond. A separate weather system was already dumping heavy rain in North Carolina and nearby areas well before Helene arrived, which did not help the flooding situation at all.Rain will continue to fall through Tuesday across portions of the middle-Atlantic. While Helene moved quickly previously, the storm merged with an upper low, a slower-moving storm system, and has been moving much more sluggishly into central Appalachia through Virginia.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Screenshot 2024-10-01 071340-1727788502189.png"><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/Screenshot 2024-09-30 183749-1727743172557.jpg">Most of the rain will not be super heavy but any light to moderate rain in some of these saturated soils of the Appalachians will lead to more flooding!For perspective on the severity of this weather event, we look to one river in particular; the French Broad River near Asheville, North Carolina. At this river location, the French Broad reached 30 feet, which surpassed the previous record river level of 20 feet! Flooding Threat Continues as Leftover Helene Spins Towards the East Coast

Pumpkin spice lattes are back at coffee shops, and the Halloween décor has popped into retail locations, which means fall is here. In fact, meteorological fall began on September 1st, and earlier on Sunday the Autumnal Equinox kicked off the astronomical season at 8:44 AM ET. Mother Nature heralds in the tell-tale signs that Autumn has arrived with the changing colors of the leaves.&nbsp;&nbsp;But forecasting the changing leaves is a difficult task with variables that can sometimes be difficult to track. &nbsp;Weather plays an important role in the timing of when leaves will change, and while some locations have seasonal averages for peak foliage, nature has the final say on when the brilliant colors will arrive.&nbsp;WHY LEAVES CHANGE COLOR:&nbsp;The change in season sparks the transformation within deciduous trees. Deciduous trees typically have large, broad leaves and use flowers to reproduce; think your oak and maple types. These trees get the deciduous classification from the Latin word “dēciduus” which means “to fall” because of their tendency to drop their leaves once they reach maturity. &nbsp;Coniferous trees are your evergreen trees. These trees tend to have needles or scales and reproduce using cones. Coniferous trees typically hold their needles year-round as they help with water conservation for the tree to continue producing food for itself during the long winter and summer months.&nbsp;Because of the deciduous tree's leaf shape, they are the ones that transform into brilliant plumes of color as the days get shorter. &nbsp;So, what’s sparking the change?&nbsp;According to the Smithsonian, in fall, the days start getting shorter, meaning less sunlight, and in turn, cooler temperatures. This signals the trees to end their food making process. The chlorophyll within the leaves that helps conduct photosynthesis begins to fade allowing other chemicals within the leaves to shine. &nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/08/Screenshot 2024-08-28 135520-1724874946511.png">WHAT DO FORECASTS LOOK FOR:&nbsp;“The ideal weather we’re looking for is sunny, warm afternoons, and clear, cold nights,” said Evan Fisher, the founder of <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="http://ExploreFall.com">ExploreFall.com</a>. Too much drought or rain can vastly impact the colors produced by the trees. &nbsp;&nbsp;Heat can induce stress on the trees and allow them to show color early. Fisher said maples are susceptible to stress, such as a warm summer, like many along the Eastern Seaboard have seen in the 2024 summer season. &nbsp;“The hardest part of predicting fall color is accounting for the extremes.” Fisher elaborated. “[Drought] that can do crazy things to the fall color. If you have a little bit of drought it may delay the color. If you have a lot of drought, it may accelerate it. But we don’t really know exactly where that line is exactly in between. And sometimes the same goes for really moist conditions.” &nbsp;Another important factor for forecasting foliage is the amount of daylight too. “I like to say that daylight opens the door for fall colors. Once the days get short enough and the temperatures are cool enough, we start to see the colors progress,” Fisher said.&nbsp;You can learn more about forecasting fall colors below:&nbsp;<div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/GyZbO8Rh3Ug" start="0"></iframe></div>WHY ARE THEY DIFFERENT COLORS: &nbsp;The color each tree presents depends on what’s present in the leaves. According to the State University of New York’s College of Environmental Science and Forestry, xanthophyll and carotenes are already present in leaves as the green chlorophyll fades away. These pigments give leaves yellow and orange coloring, similar to how they color other plants such as carrots.&nbsp;Other chemical reactions can happen at the same time as the fading green color which produces anthocyanin pigments, which give leaves a reddish and purplish color. The Forestry Services of Scotland says if temperatures stay above freezing, more of these anthocyanin pigments are produced. If autumn remains sunny and dry, even more trees will begin to produce pigments to give even more red color. The process is slow though, which is why you sometimes see trees with a mix of greens, yellows, and reds all at once.&nbsp;WHY DO LEAVES DROP:&nbsp;In the spring, trees create little tubules between the leaves and the branches to transport nutrients back and forth between the leaves. As the fall creeps in, the tree begins producing a hormone that builds up a waxy layer between the leaf and the branch that reduces nutrient transportation. Eventually the leaf will be weak enough to be carried away by the wind, rain, or snow, said Michael Davidson on his Molecular Expressions website via Florida State University. &nbsp;By dropping their leaves, deciduous trees will spend less energy through the winter and converse moisture throughout their systems. The dropping of their leaves also prevents external stress that can occur when heavy snow weighs down a tree’s branches. &nbsp;THE FORECAST AHEAD:For the Week of September 19 - September 26, 2024, the foliage map highlights some areas across the country that will be reaching peak color.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/Foliage Forecast-1727625536889.jpg">This includes the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, where some of the best spots for leaf-peeping those aspens will wrap up this upcoming week. Falling into Fall - Why Leaves Change Color and Your Foliage Forecast

MEXICO - John officially made landfall as a category 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph on September 23, 2024. This happened near the city of Marquelia, Mexico along the southern coast of Mexico. Pressure was as low as 959 mb.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1838420969070956611" src="https://x.com/NHC_Pacific/status/1838420969070956611"></div>As John interacted with the difficult topography of southern Mexico it became a remnant low earlier this week. Hurricane John Resurrects in Mexico

An elongated front has been the cause of severe chances over the past few days. Storms on Tuesday afternoon packed quite a punch, leading to sporadic wind damage reports in the Mid-Atlantic states. But probably the most impressive storms rumbled through the north side of Oklahoma City Tuesday evening, dropping baseball-sized hail!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/ok hail-1727272332876.jpg">The same front is slowing down Wednesday, but will run into just enough moisture and instability to produce some more problematic storms.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/instability-1727272422514.jpg">The Storm Prediction Center is highlighting areas from Corpus Christi to Charlotte that could see damaging winds out of storms this afternoon.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/1-1727298542426.png">As moisture surges north from Helene, the flooding threat will start to sky-rocket in parts of the southeast. A cold front draped across the country extending from Texas through the Midwest was the forcing mechanism that triggered thunderstorms on Sunday and Monday. As the frontal boundary moves east, more severe storms and some isolated flooding will be possible through the Ohio Valley.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/09-24 HRRR OVERNIGHT-1727224463464.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The Storm Prediction Center has issued a SLIGHT (level 2 out of 4) risk through overnight across portions of Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Tennessee. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/Screenshot 2024-09-24 211926-1727234380894.jpg">Some areas of the Ohio and Tennessee Valley will see localized heavy rainfall that may prompt ponding and flooding concerns, but the problem with this area of the country is Helene, a tropical system in the Gulf, will move into this area stalling out the front and bringing heavy to tropical downpours into the Southern Appalachians.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/09-24_WPC-1727224522441.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Stay tuned with WeatherNation for more details on the rating of the Indiana tornado and the latest severe weather forecast!

Storms Continue to Rumble Across the Midwest

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - An intense thunderstorm tore through OKC earlier Monday evening, producing large hail up to 2.75" in diameter in The Village.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/Screenshot 2024-09-24 185004-1727225425393.jpg">The system responsible for this is a trough pushing through the state. The main threat with these storms will be the potential for large hailstones exceeding 1" in diameter. Severe winds above 58 mph will also be a threat.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/Screenshot 2024-09-24 212128-1727234502900.jpg">The Storm Prediction Center highlights areas surrounding Oklahoma City south to Dallas, with a Slight Risk across the OKC metro. Damaging winds and large hail look to be the biggest concerns.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/09/09-24_bams-1727225525409.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Timing will favor the afternoon hours, but there is some uncertainty about how far south these will survive. A reinforcing shot of cooler air will initially be what sparks the storms but will settle into parts of the southern plains. Earth is about to get a new asteroid friend, but not the kind that crashes and causes havoc. It’s more of an “in-laws that overstay their welcome” kind of situation. Here’s what you need to know about a new mini-moon:&nbsp;<h3>What’s happening?&nbsp;</h3>Back in August, the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) program discovered a roughly 10-meter-wide asteroid from the Arjuna asteroid belt that will get close enough to Earth to classify it as a “mini-moon” starting on September 29th. The report <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/2515-5172/ad781f">published in the American Astronomical Society journal</a>, said&nbsp;asteroid 2024 PT5 will make a horseshoe shaped orbit around our planet over the course of 57 days; ending on November 25th.&nbsp;<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1833588006353310110" src="https://x.com/tony873004/status/1833588006353310110"></div>&nbsp;<h3>What is a “Mini-Moon"?&nbsp;</h3>“Mini-moons” can range from asteroids to random pieces of space junk floating around. These near-Earth objects will enter Earth’s gravitational pull and will often complete at least a partial revolution around our planet. Sometimes the object doesn’t even complete a full revolution before exiting and continuing its regular heliocentric trajectories. &nbsp;While asteroid 2024 PT5 won’t complete a full orbit of Earth, some astronomers may call it a “temporarily captured flyby”.&nbsp;<h3>Will I be able to see it?&nbsp;</h3>Short answer: no.&nbsp;Long answer: 2024 PT5 won’t be bright enough, even with a typical home telescope. &nbsp;NASA classifies how bright celestial objects are by their magnitude. Low numbers, including negatives, are brighter, while higher numbers are fainter.&nbsp;2024 PT5 has a magnitude of 27.595. The naked eye can see objects as faint as roughly 6.5 magnitude, and a traditional 12-inch telescope can see things with magnitudes between 16-17. To put it in perspective, the moon sits at –13 magnitude. &nbsp;<h3>Is this a rare event?&nbsp;</h3>These phenomena aren’t partially rare as the Earth can capture Near Earth Objects all the time. In 2022, a mini-moon called Asteroid 2022 YG entered the Earth’s orbit. Our planet has had a repeated visitor of 2022 NX1 asteroid who became a mini-moon in both 1981 and 2022. That asteroid won’t be back until 2051 though. &nbsp;In fact, this happens so often, some researchers believe Earth always has at least one mini-moon hovering in space. &nbsp;&nbsp;
