Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

A tornado watch has been issued for portions of Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, and Tennessee until 11 PM CT. The main threats are: a few tornadoes possible, scattered hail up to 2" in diameter, and scattered gusts up to 70 mph. A few severe thunderstorm watches have expanded into Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas through tonight too.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-23 181243-1742775198747.png">The SPC has issued a SLIGHT (level 2 out of 5) risk for severe weather through Monday morning across portions of Mississippi, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee, and Alabama. Severe Weather Risk Continues Through Tonight & Monday

The first full week of spring in the west will feel more like May than March, thanks to a strong ridge of high pressure targeting the region. Abnormally warm temperatures early in the season can weigh more heavily on the body due to a lack of acclimation, so please take precautions if you have plans to be outdoors for an extended time next week.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/phoenixxxxxx ssss-1742779226846.png">Record-breaking temperatures are expected from Southern California to Montana, with highs in the lower deserts approaching 100°.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/03-23_rsw_mon to thu dots-1742762076315.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>These record-breaking temperatures can be especially impactful early in the season when a lot of people are not yet used to the heat. The Heat Risk is expected to reach a moderate level (2 out of 4) on Tuesday, expected to be the warmest day for many in the deserts.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-23 112437-1742750682156.png"><h1>Forecast Highs</h1>Areas in the Sonoran Desert (Phoenix, Palm Springs, Yuma) are expected to reach the upper 90s, and may even surpass 100° early in the week. The earliest day in the year on record for Phoenix to hit 100° or higher is March 26th, one day after peak high temperatures are expected in southern Arizona.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/forecdd-1742779119977.png">The Pacific Northwest will dry out during the work with record-breaking warmth expected. High temperatures will climb into the 70s and even 80s for some.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/mon weee-1742779150413.png">The Northern Rockies could see rapid snow melt through next week as high temperatures climb to more than 20° above average. Billings, Cheyenne, and Rapid City are all expected to climb into the 70s.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-23 112424-1742750668072.png">If you plan to spend time outdoors, especially when venturing farther away from cities on a hike or similar, be sure to bring plenty of water, take breaks in the shade, and wear loose, light-colored clothing.

Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. NORTHWEST - According to avalanche.org, the Cascades and Olympics of Washington and Mount Hood of Oregon have increased the danger of avalanches to a high degree. This has been accompanied by avalanche warnings (in blue). Avalanche watches have been issued for the Whitefish, Swan, and Flathead Range backcountry. These expire tonight. An avalanche watch is in place for portions of Montana (peach) and this is in place through Monday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-23 141256-1742761108804.png">According to the National Weather Service, below 6500 feet, rain on new snow may create wet snow avalanche hazards, and at higher elevations new snow may create unstable slabs. The heaviest moisture will continue through tonight before the stalled front lifts farther north into Canada, limiting the extent of new moisture.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/FORECASSTTTTT-1742778892708.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Since this looks to be a warmer system, through tonight there is a level 2 out of 4 (slight) risk for heavy rainfall across the Olympics and Cascades of Washington State. Avalanche Danger Increases Out West

Winter's grip hasn't loosened on the Upper Midwest yet! A round of heavy snow will impact areas around the Great Lakes, especially Lake Superior, with gusty winds and scattered showers farther to the south. Some areas could see pockets of 6-12 inches of snow (top of page), especially along the western shores of Lake Superior.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-22 091429-1742656479461.png">Low pressure building off the Rockies will strengthen as it moves into the Great Lakes, with impacts expected through Monday morning. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-23 143628-1742762193192.png">The heavy snow triggers winter weather alerts around Lake Superior and northern Lake Michigan, including winter storm warnings in the Arrowhead of Minnesota, Northern Wisconsin, and Western UP of Michigan. This is where 12"+ of snow will be possible in addition to gusty winds. Blowing snow and reduced visibility are likely.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/knnnn-1742779342189.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The snow will persist as the low slowly moves east, finally exiting the region around midday on Monday.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/winssss-1742779443827.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>In addition to rain and snow, winds will be strong and gusty around the strengthening low-pressure system. Winds over 35 mph with gusts over 50 mph are possible.

FLORIDA - A wildfire in Miami-Dade County Florida shut down access to the Florida Keys on Tuesday on US 1 - with another closure on Thursday. The fire has now increased to over 26,000 acres with containment increasing to 65% as of late Sunday, according to the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://ffs.firesponse.com/public/">Florida Forest Service.</a><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-23 140138-1742760129494.png">Dry and breezy conditions will persist for the Southeast, prompting the issuance of fire weather alerts. It may seem strange for Florida, a typically humid state, to have wildfire danger, but the ongoing drought conditions and high winds have led to critical fire danger. This happens more often in the spring after drier conditions over the winter.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-23 140348-1742760235712.png"><h1>Fire Outlook</h1>The SPC has maintained elevated fire danger back in the Plains through tomorrow. Dry and windy conditions are expected behind a cold front that supports elevated fire potential for these areas.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-23 140435-1742760295372.png">As with any day, be vigilant not to do anything that could cause a spark or a flame. If an evacuation order is issued for your area, heed it. Tornadoes can happen any time, any day, any where. But the strength of a tornado can only be determined by the damage it leaves behind. This area typically experiences moderate flooding each spring, and despite the lack of snowpack, local antecedent conditions and typical spring rainfall will lead to the likelihood of moderate flooding on these tributaries.Current water supply forecasts in the western United States indicate much below normal conditions for the Desert Southwest due to below average snowpack.In Alaska, spring ice breakup and snowmelt flood risk is forecast to be above average for the Upper Yukon, Tanana, and Koyukuk River basins. Looking for warmer temperatures? The wait is finally over. Spring has officially arrived. Thursday, March 20th, 5:01 am Eastern Standard time, while you were most likely catching some Z’s, spring arrived. Thursday marks the Spring Equinox, which is when earth tilts on its axis towards the sun, giving a balance of day and night, each lasting 12 hours.&nbsp;This astronomical event symbolizes a fresh start&nbsp;as flowers begin to bloom, and a sign&nbsp;of warmer weather ahead. Some other things that spring brings that are not so pleasant are pollen and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/severe-weather-awareness-week-2025">severe weather</a>.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-20 053347-1742470435169.jpg"><h2>The Science Behind the Equinox&nbsp;</h2>The Spring Equinox, also known as the vernal equinox, occurs when the sun crosses directly over the Earth's equator. This shift causes both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres to experience equal amounts of daylight and darkness. The phenomenon is a direct result of the Earth’s axial tilt, which is 23.5 degrees. As the planet orbits the sun, this tilt causes different regions of Earth to experience varying lengths of daylight throughout the year.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-20 053030-1742470284949.jpg"><h2>Fun Facts about the Vernal Equinox&nbsp;</h2><ol><li>The equinox occurs when the sun is directly over the equator resulting in a nearly equal length of night and day for nearly every region of the world.&nbsp;</li></ol><ol start="2"><li>It is called the Vernal Equinox because the word "vernal" stands for Spring and "equinox" means "equal night" in Latin.&nbsp;</li></ol><ol start="3"><li>It does not happen on the same day every year and is usually within four days from March 19-23. The reason behind this is because a calendar year is 365 days (about 12 months), but it takes Earth 365.25 days to revolve around the sun. That extra quarter adds up (and is part of the reason we have a leap day) and means the equinox fluctuates around 6 hours yearly. For example, in 2024 the equinox was on March 20th.&nbsp;</li></ol><ol start="4"><li>Meteorological Spring is different than astronomical Spring. Because the Spring equinox fluctuates it is easier to group the seasons by the first of the month for record-keeping. Spring Has Officially Arrived: The Vernal Equinox Marks a New Season

Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

It has been a busy day across the Midwest with numerous severe storms. Damaging winds, hail, and tornadoes have been reported and the threat continues overnight. Strong wind gusts of 70 mph or greater, were reported in portions of Illinois and Indiana. (below)<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/WID RPROROR-1742434899958.png"> The NWS of Central Illinois is working on confirming a tornado near the Delavan, IL area.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1902449556849058291" src="https://x.com/NWStornado/status/1902449556849058291"></div>This risk extends through the Deep South, the same areas impacted by Fri through this past weekend's storm system. A marginal risk for strong to severe storms remains in place overnight including the cities of Detroit, Cincinnati, and Nashville.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/OVERNIGHTTT-1742434087536.png">The storms will continue to push to the east overnight and some areas that saw the strong storms Wednesday, like Chicago, will see rain transition to snow through the overnight hours. A strong low-pressure system that moved through the Plains and into the Great Lakes was responsible for highway shut-downs and blizzard conditions on Wednesday.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1902364027055173689" src="https://x.com/NWKansasKDOT/status/1902364027055173689"></div>Thousands of folks in the Plains remain without power, so as winds intensify and temperatures drop make sure you have your generator up and running in case power goes out, and charge up those devices!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-19 140922-1742417227915.png">Intense bands of snow accompanied by 50-60 mph wind gusts will start to move east overnight. Blizzard Blasts Central Plains

Widespread tornadoes touchdown across the Central U.S. and Deep South on Friday and Saturday, leaving a trail of destruction and multiple casualties. As of Monday, additional tornado reports have come out of North Carolina and Pennsylvania.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-17 143918-1742244295845.png">The National Weather Service in New Orleans has done preliminary surveys to find that two tornadoes moved through nearly the same locations near Tylerstown, Mississippi. The first was rated EF-4 and the second was rated EF-3.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1901767513903341817" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1901767513903341817"></div>In addition to the tornadoes, over 150 tornado warnings were issued from Wisconsin to Mississippi on Friday alone, and a sum of over 300 tornado warnings were issued from this event, underscoring the widespread and dangerous nature of the storm system.&nbsp;Several tornadoes have been rated after storm surveys were completed, with several EF-3 tornadoes confirmed and two EF-4 tornadoes in Arkansas.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-17 211408-1742267662064.png">Video coming out of Elliot, MS shows firefighters recusing people from homes that have been grounded to a tornado that moved through the area.&nbsp;<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/VON_031525_RSE_ELLIOTT,MS_PART 3 PULLING PEOPLE OUT OF DEBRIS, POLICE RESPOND TO TRAGEDY_WHATSAPP_JONATHAN PETRAMALA_DO_E031525-1742056158089.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>In Rolla, Missouri, a powerful tornado hit the area. Two men, in their truck at a local gas station, captured chilling video footage showing the heavy rainfall and powerful gusts of wind. Ski Country Gets Fresh Snowfall

WESTERN U.S. - Winter weather alerts remain in effect through tomorrow morning for up to 2 feet of snowfall. This system is expected to bring high winds, heavy rain, and heavy snow to the mountains.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-17 125058-1742237466008.png">A reinforcing system is helping to bring additional moisture to the West Coast, but the heaviest rain and snow will follow the front inland to the Four Corners. Snow levels remain fairly high with this system, but many mountain passes will be difficult through into Tuesday morning. Our next round of rain and snow quickly moves in by Wednesday to add to the mountain snowpack and moisten up the valleys.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/QQQQQ-1742261212224.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h2>Precipitation Forecast</h2>Recent storms have helped immensely with the Sierra snowpack, we are now up to 92% of the statewide average. A tornado watch is set through 1 AM in these areas.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-16 190821-1742173751390.png">A cold front will continue to usher storms east through Monday morning. The northeastern U.S. storms will last a little longer than the southeastern U.S. as the surface low continues to push through. Severe Threat Moves East into Atlantic

Hopefully you could sneak outside in the wee hours of Friday morning to catch a glimpse of the Lunar Eclipse! It was the last one for North America until 2029. Fear not, we've got you covered. As the moon moved into the umbra or the darkest shadow cast by the earth, it turned a deep red hue. Starting around 1 AM ET the red color became much more noticeable around 2 am, with totality or the complete blood moon look, happening between 2:26 am and 3:31 am ET.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/2025-03-08 08-28-36-1741448546607.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Here's a look at how the moon changed from its classic white to dark red as it moved across Earth's shadow. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-08 084030-1741448509493.png">The eclipse was a "total" lunar eclipse because it passed through the darkest portion of Earth's shadow, known as the umbra. While this earth's shadow is always present, it isn't too often that the moon moves directly through the darkest part.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/03/Screenshot 2025-03-08 085447-1741449297753.png">During a partial lunar eclipse, the "umbra", or earth's hard shadow, doesn't fully cover the moon, only a portion. During a penumbral lunar eclipse, the Earth only passes through the "soft" shadow of the moon, with the umbra completely missing the lunar surface.
